Well, saying he would 'kill Shaw' or that you 'don't need Plowman' is maybe going a bit far.
He has had some nice performances this year in the TAC Cup, much better than what he showed last season at least. Which is good to see, since it's the whole point of the overage rule - being that year older and having a mature body compared to his opponents no doubt helps his game. More time up forward would probably help, because I daresay he wont be doing much ruck work if he was to make it in the AFL. And that's an issue I have with all the different leagues across the country, anyone over 190cm is made to play in the ruck despite it not really helping their draft chances that much.
With Pierce and Patolo though, hopefully Calvert can stay up forward for entire games. He is a nice strong mark, and a decent although slightly inconsistent kick. I still wouldn't have him as anything more than a late pick or rookie chance though.
Shaw was dreadful on Wednesday and Calvert nealy won the game for country![]()

I think they are related, but he's probably shown as much as the AIS boys deep foward who havn't fired a shot.Shaw played in a team who couldn't get the ball forward while Calvert turned up for 3 1/2 mins. Hardly killing him is it?
Since all 10 of his posts have been about Calvert, one would think there is something going on there. So I wont be too unkind to him.
But, Calvert did nothing last year as an 18 year old. He wasn't picked in the initial Vic Country squad. And his best games in the TAC Cup have been as a ruckman - a position he'd be too short for in the AFL. I'm not saying he wont make it, just that he's not the second coming.
As for Mason Shaw, I posted this on the Fremantle board but I don't understand the unfair attention he is getting. For starters he came into the Championships with just two games behind him in the WAFL. Plus he is playing in a pretty poor side at the moment, the delivery going forward has been awful at times. Yet he has 10 goals from 4 games, which is nothing to turn your nose up at. He isn't the type of player who will run up the ground and pad his stats with some cheap ball. Nothing has really changed in my mind.
Hey Chris, Who do you think are the best shutdown KPD's in this years draft? not so much rebounding.. Cos we are in desperate need of a KPD and IMO we already have Fisher and Goddard who are great rebounders and Gwilt who can rebound very well to
26. Melbourne - Jack Viney (178cm midfielder - Oakleigh)
In an open draft, I'd probably have Viney somewhere between picks 5 and 15 on talent and more specifically value (history says similar types can be drafted later). But in terms of F/S bidding, I think the Gold Coast will genuinely bid on him - with the intention of drafting him, not just to force Melbourne to take him early. Viney would be a near perfect for the Suns in terms of what they already have, so they might look towards needs over best available although it would be difficult using the #1 pick that way. Not that it matters though, Melbourne will 100% take him. He is one of those small bulldozer types, if he sees the ball he'll go in and get it. His kicking and athleticism are decent, but his attack is excellent - he is a very mature player. I do think he is a first round pick, just that maybe he'll be closer to the level of an Andrew Swallow than a Joel Selwood.
I suppose Tanner Smith would be up there.
But the two I like are Ryan Morrison and Matthew Wallis. Morrison is a 190cm CHB from Dandenong/Vic Country. He hasn't been getting the attention that some other KPDs have, but I think he could have a similar early impact to someone like Alex Johnson from Sydney. Whereas Wallis has been holding down the FB position for SA, and has done so quite well.
Any recruiter that doesn't take the "Best Player Available", regardless of position, should be fired immediately.
chris, you still a stringer fan? If thats a yes you still his agent?
I thought O'Rourke was fantatsic on Friday. Could you see him pushing into the top 10 by years end?? - his body has held up this year which is a big plus.
Of course I'm still a fan. Why would that change now?
Stringer's performances in the Championships will have little effect on where he gets drafted in my opinion. Teams know how good a player he is already. All that will matter is his testing and more importantly his medical assessments at the Combine. That will be the final piece of the puzzle for the recruiters.
I think he'll probably just miss the top 10. The way he is performing, yes he would be deserving of such a selection. But with the other players available, he might have to settle for top 15.
Really under the pump v WA and didn't get any help from mids when WA got a run-on. If he's going to play down back - esp last line - needs to add poise to work rate. Still hung in there and provided enough contest but probably fortunate that the big WA forwards' set shots went pear-shaped.Ballard I have been impressed with. Works hard and tackles really well, has good hands too. He's pretty much been in the bests in every game he has played in the TAC Cup this year. Really good size for a midfielder too, he looks to be developing along the same lines as Tom Sheridan did last season.
Chris after watching big Joe Daniher yesterday I just can't see how he wouldn't have gone No.1 if available to all. What a talent.
If there are kids ranked higher than him, the top end of this draft must be outraegously good. Essendon will make out like bandits.
I'm not saying Grundy would beat Jamar if they played today, but that Grundy is the better talent and will become the better player in my humble opinion.
geez... glad you have it all figured out... that would be a massive result for you fellas.I'd still take Grundy if he was available at 3 to be honest.
Him, Toumpas and Viney would be a dream draft.
