Spot on, my best 22 to a tee.

I have the same question on JSOS. I still figure he’ll play 22 games + finals (yes finals) as players will be unavailable due to injury and form, just can’t slot him in my best 22. Our list is in good shape.

Interchange: Marchbank Fisher Ed & Dow/Stocker

Depth: Williamson Dow/Stocker O'brien JSOS Gibbons Kennedy Lang Casboult TDK Newnes & Pick 9

Notes:
Williamson to gain continuity in his football.
Newnes probably in a battle with Newman for that half back role.
Choice between Dow and Stocker based on fitness levels and progress.
O'brien needs to try and push Murphy out of the team.
Gibbons probably fighting with Fisher for the same spot.
JSOS probably gets a call up depending on the opposition and our team needs.
Casboult first in when a tall goes down.
Kennedy, Lang and TDK to keep developing their craft.
Pick 9 to be eased into the system.

Rd 1 team with the assumption Charlie, Marchy and Harry looking possibly unlikely.

FB- Simmo, Jones, Plow
HB- Doc, Weiters, Newman
R- Kreuz, Ed, Walsh
C- Murph, Crippa, Setters
HF- Martin, Levi, Cunners
FF- Eddie, Kennedy, Mclovin

I- Samo, Gibbons, Fish, JSOS

NIL Dow, O’Brien, Newnes, TDK, Stocker and Willa.

The talent of the 3 I’ve omitted is obviously immense and they are best 22 when fit, but strangely enough I believe the team looks more balanced without them.
-We have a nimble but strong back half.
- A natural second ruck option
-Quality delivery into the 50
- Nice balance of youth and experience
- And a young flexible bench

Downside is that we look a bit one paced.

Kennedy I believe will be the one that jumps out of the box next year with opportunity. As a forward though predominantly(but I’d take Charlie in a heartbeat if fit). Go Blues

Based on what I saw at one training session (huge sample size...):

Simpson Jones Plowman
Docherty Weitering SPS
O'Brien Cripps Walsh
Cuningham McKay Martin
McGovern C. Curnow Betts
Kreuzer Setterfield Murphy

Gibbons Fisher Williamson E. Curnow

Didn't see JSOS, saw Gibbons being an absolute commanding pest. Definitely best 22. Suspect JSOS displaces someone eventually, will let it play out over pre-season.

No place for Newman and his poor defensive ability if everyone is healthy. That is unlikely to be the case, though. Not sure where Marchbank sits since Plowman is a better 3rd tall. So many variables, few answers.

Williamson looks in tremendous physical shape. Strong, explosive, definitely straight in if physically able.

Casboult first in if any of McKay or Charlie are unavailable, happy to have him in, beast.

Didn't see Martin there but confident he is in.

Dow, Kennedy, Stocker, Cottrell, TDK fighting in the 2s, but not far away at all.

I am not having a dig, this is a real good lineup, but what role do you see Gibbons playing?

Balanced mid, leaning towards more outside. Something akin to Murphs role. I also really like what he brings to the team in the way of energy, and that nagging, annoying little bloke thing he seems to have. Can really get under the oppositions skin. Plus he is a mature body.

All that said, he's probably 22nd on my team of 22.

That nagging is infectious! Particularly good if we’re going for that forward half game. I’m currently having an internal battle between him and Cunningham in the 22. My list is almost identical to yours.

Always like to have a crack at this every year and see how wrong I get this
If it is 2020 Best 22 then I am picking it on the basis that at some point guys like Charlie and Harry will be back fit and therefore this is my team. Not sure they will all play Rd1 but by the end of 2020 these guys will be judged as our Best 22 team:
Newman Jones Williamson
SPS Weitering Docherty
Walsh Crippa Martin
J Silvagni C Curnow Cuningham
McGovern McKay Betts

Kruezer Setterfield Murphy

IC: Stocker E Curnow Gibbons Casboult

Emergencies:
Defense - went with mobility and skills
Marchbank - unlucky but with his injuries I just feel he may be beaten by others
Plowman - will be an important foot soldier but not Best 22
Simpson - will play plenty of games this year but just feel he will be passed by
Midfield - went with harder bodies
Dow - will need to improve his kicking, a line breaking mid we need but he has some issues
O’Brien - a lefty who can run - he will have his chances if he keeps progressing
Pittonet - maybe
Forward - went with X factor
Kennedy - will struggle except when injuries
Fisher - will have to take his game back to 2018 level and then go forward

Looks pretty well spot on to me.

Levi and Bam Bam as placeholders for Harry and Charlie, pending fitness.

Though I wouldn't be at all surprised should Gibbons or Newnes get the nod ahead of Stocker, at least early on. Not necessarily because one or the other is "better", but just because the team probably benefits more from another mature body who can cover a heap of ground.

Interesting to note you don't even have Dow listed in the emergencies. Accidental omission, or do you see him being bumped back to the VFL for an extended run?

tbh - I didn't even think of Dow in my round one calculations - I'm sure he will be a topic of conversation going forward.

Let's assume worse case scenario:

Round 1 2020 - H, chronic groin strain; Marchbank, neck fracture; Charlie, knee; Doc, acl; Williamson, back; Macreadie, back, Cuningham, ankle; Martin, GC; Jones, concussion; Kreuzer, compartment syndrome complications.

Newman, Caz, Plowman
Simpson, Weiters, SPS
Murphy, Cripps, E. Curnow
Pittonet, Setterfield, Walsh
SOJ, McGovern, Fisher
Gibbons, TDK, Betts

I/C LOB, Dow, Newnes, Kennedy

[Pittonet, TDK, Newnes (on recent form, having been dropped by aints), Kennedy and Dow are not, or not yet, proven AFL level)

Compare the above team with round 1 2017:

Doc, Rowe, Plowman
Simpson, Marchbank, Thomas
Armfield, Cripps, Gibbs
Kreuzer, Murphy, E. Curnow
SOJ, Weitering Charlie
Wright, Caz, SPS

I/C Smedts, Macreadie, Pickett, White.

[Smedts, Pickett, White were never AFL level; Caz was not AFL level at FF; Rowe, Armfield & Thomas were marginal, at best, SPS, Macreadie first games.

And round 1, 2018:

Byrne, Marchbank, Plowman
Simpson, Weitering, Thomas
Mullett, Cripps, SPS
Kreuzer, Murphy, E. Curnow
SOJ, Charlie, Fisher
Garlett, Caz, Wright

I/C Lamb, Dow, Kennedy, Jones

[Mullett, Garlett, Caz, Lamb & Jones were not at AFL level (Jones metamorphosis occurred later in 2018), Dow first game & Kennedy still less proven than now.

And round 1 2019:

Newman, Jones, Plowman
Simpson, Weitering, Thomas
Fisher, Cripps, Walsh
Phillips, Murphy, E Curnow
Cuningham, Charlie, SPS
Fasolo, Harry, Garlett

I/C Gibbons, Setterfield, Dow, McGovern

[Fasolo, Garlett not at AFL level; Dow, Setterfield (1st game back from acl), Gibbons (first game) unproven. Although Walsh's first game, he was pre-proven and does not count]

Conclusion:
On a worst case scenario in 2020 we are unable to select 10 players of whom 7 walk into the senior side if fit and available (Doc, Kreuzer, Harry, Charlie, Jones, Martin and Marchbank).

Obviously our depth is stretched with 5 "unproven" AFL players. That said, I am happy to have Dow and Kennedy in any team and think they will both make it, Dow with massive blue sky. Pittonet has not been hopeless at AFL level and is now 23, which is when ruckmen usually show what they are worth. Newnes is a very experienced AFL footballer who, at age 27 next year should not be over-the-hill. Only TDK would not be expected to show sustained AFL form.

TLDR

At full strength we go into 2020 with an abundance of AFL ready footballers. Even crippled by injuries our depth is okay. By comparison with our round 1 teams in other years we have much to look forward to.

For my best 22

Simmo Weitering Newman
Doc Jones SPS

I think that Newman has surpassed Plowman, who pretty much plays the same deep safety role as Simmo. His path back to best 22 is to replace Simmo. Willo will probably need to replace Newman or one of the wingmen.

Walsh Cripps Martin
Kruz Ed Setters

Good mix of size and pace, all can win their own ball and Martin, Walsh and Crippa are all serious goal threats running forward.

Jack Charlie Cuners
Eddie Harry Gov

With our new "Lock it in" play style it is essential that the forward line can win their own ball, both in the air and on the ground. Jack and Kennedy were a huge part of our late season success for this reason. I like Jack and Cuners not just because they score around 1 goal a game this early in their careers, but because they also give off around another goal a game to team mates. That sort or creativity is gold.

Cas, Kennedy, Fish, Gibbo plenty of run and flexibility on the bench, critical to cover injuries and make sure we rotate well and finish games strongly
