Why do you think Williamson deserves a gig in our best 22 Jimmae?

Hard to do.Round ones team will be distinctively different to round 23.IMO we have a core group of 29 to choose from.

Then the depth players of 7.

With the rest rounding out the squad.

If he's fit, he compliments the rest of the defensive unit much better than Newman or SPS. If the ball hits the deck deep in the D50, we'll look pretty shaky without him.

Here's hoping his rebounding ability is still as sharp as ever too.

Stocker could be the most effective one of our younger kids within two years. Got big hopes for Walsh, Dow, Setterfield etc. and still think Stocker could be more important than any of them.

Agree. I think with some players you can just tell. Straight away he came in under pressure down back was composed, hard at it and clean. Will be a beauty for us

Can't remember the last time selection for best22 was difficult which is a great thing, building depth.
Obviously Marchbank isn't a two's player when fully fit, for me it's run and balance.
Williamson Dow Kennedy DeKoning Gibbons Casboult Stocker Macreadie Pittonett we need raising the bar and smashing the VFL if and when they play there.

That's the best looking 2's team of seen in years ..

Bloody hell this is getting harder and harder to do now.

Maybe, Martin in Kennedy out?
Great problem to have for the team selection committee :D

Best 22 vs starting 22.
Going to give this another run, but who knows until we get past the pre-season? Anyway, come round 1:
(Bolded are almost certain starters, but for health)

Simpson Jones Plowman
Docherty Weitering
Marchbank.........Pretty stock standard but the addition of Docherty alone should make us immediately better.

Kreuzer Murphy Dow
Walsh Cripps SPS...........................Going out on a limb with Dow, but we need his pace and acceleration out of packs.

Cuningham CCurnow McGovern
Betts McKay xxxxxx........................Reckon we'll have one debutant here and a pacy small forward (should we take them in the draft) could be key.

ECurnow Martin Fisher Setterfield

Not too bad to have the likes of Newman, O'Brien, Newnes, JSilvagni, Kennedy, Stocker, Williamson, Casboult and Gibbons sitting just outside.
Not too bad either to have the likes of De Koning, BSilvagni, Macreadie and also that Cottrell guy, still developing.

Simpson Jones Marchbank
Plowman Weitering Doc

SPS Cripps Setterfield
Kruezer Ed Walsh

Martin Charlie Dow
Betts McGovern McKay

Murphy Fisher Silvagni Stocker

Em: Cuningham Williamson O'Brien

25-30: Newman Kennedy Gibbons TDK Pick9

Seems wrong putting Murph on the bench but he's basically the other mid with the 3 named and Dow and Martin.

It's shaping up well with improvement inherent and nice depth developing. A touch more pace would be nice.

Geez it's getting tough.

FB: Plowman, Jones, Marchbank
HB: Docherty, Weitering, SPS
C: Murphy, Walsh, Setterfield
R: Kreuzer, Cripps, Curnow
HF: Martin*, Curnow, Silvagni
FF: Betts, McKay, McGovern
I/C: Simpson, Newnes*, Gibbons, Cuningham

I'm not sure how I feel about leaving all of Fisher, Dow, O'Brien, Williamson and Stocker out, but I feel like if we're discussing a purely "Best 22", they have some work to do in order to lock down a spot.

By the same line of thinking I could, and perhaps should, make room for Casboult up forward.

Newman really doesn't deserve to be dropped either, but Doc back in might force the issue. Simmo wins that last spot on experience but it's probably a coin toss.

Depends where we want to play Samo, and Martin

B: Ploman, Jones, Doc
HB: Marchbank, Weitering, ...

C: Walsh, Cripps, Setterfield
Foll: Kreuzer, Ed, Murphy

HF: McGovern, McKay, Silvagni
F: Cuningham, Charlie, Betts

Bench: Samo, Martin, Dow, ...

2 spots open

SPS Jones Plowman
Marchbank Weitering Docherty
Walsh Cripps Setterfield
Cuningham Curnow Martin
Betts McKay McGovern

Kreuzer Curnow Murphy

Silvagni Dow Stocker Fisher

I’ve cheated a little bit leaving Simpson out, there will be injuries of course and he will play but the end is near nonetheless.

Here is my thoughts - assuming that the full list is available for selection :D
This selection of best 22 is really hard and hopefully it will translate to lots of competition for positions which is really exciting.

RD1
Plowman Jones Simpson
Docherty Marchbank Weitering
Walsh Cripps Martin
McKay C.Curnow Fisher
Betts McGovern Cuningham
Kreuzer Murphy E.Curnow

Setterfield SPS Dow Williamson

RD23
Plowman Jones SPS
Docherty Marchbank Weitering
Walsh Cripps Martin
McKay C.Curnow Fisher
Betts McGovern Cuningham
Kreuzer Murphy E.Curnow

Setterfield Stocker Dow Williamson

The only change between RD23 to RD1 is Stocker in for Simpson; and SPS can go back there for a bit of run/ drive out of the backline

I'm sure I may have missed a few, but I couldn't find room for:
  1. LOB
  2. Silvagni
  3. Newman
  4. Gibbons
  5. Kennedy
  6. Newnes
  7. New #9 draft pick

Next years team should be very competitive.

Here's my go at it.My emergencies are all players that I rate however I can't make room for them at the moment. They could all find themselves in the team by round 2. Zac Fisher, Silvagni and Casboult the most hard done by here.

Exciting times ahead. Team below:

K. Simpson L. Jones L. Plowman

S. Docherty J. Weitering C. Marchbank

J. Martin M. Murphy J. Newnes

D Cunningham C. Curnow M. Gibbons

E Betts H Mckay M McGovern

M. Kreuzer P. Cripps S. Walsh

W. Setterfield, SPS, E. Curnow, N. Newman

EMG P. Dow , Z.Fisher , L. Casboult, L.Obrien, J. Silvagni, J. Kennedy

I was overseas when Carlton beat Adelaide so finally got around to watching the match. The two players that stood out to me because I was so happy with their games were Setterfield and Gibbons. Of course Cripps, E Curnow and Walsh were enormous but pleasantly surprised with these two who I see as best 22 for round 1 2020.
  • SETTERFIELD - clean, great vision & decision making, neat skills
  • GIBBONS - quick, great engine, smart player
ROUND 1 2020:

Plowman Jones SPS
Docherty Weitering Marchbank
Walsh Cripps Setterfield
McKay C.Curnow Gibbons
Betts McGovern Martin
Kreuzer Murphy E.Curnow

I/C Stocker, JSOS, Levi, Fish

Cuningham, Newman, LOB, Kennedy, Newnes, Dow, No.9 selection all could be there one way or another.

Cuningham has to put a solid body of work in the 2's - JSOS is more reliable/versatile and really hit his straps under Teague
Newman stiff - but was recruited to cover for Doc..and Doc's back
LOB & Dow need to develop in the 2's
Newnes & Kennedy are depth

I really like what Gibbons and Silvagni add skill and IQ wise in the mid-forward half. I have left out some higher rated players because I see their strengths as absolutely essential in modern AFL. Towards the end of the year Silvagni was consistently one of our top ten performers.

Depth:
Casboult - extremely unlucky. I think McKay, Curnow and McGovern need to prove they are better options than him in the first three rounds to keep their spots.
Newman - is next in line for a defender position. If any of marchbank, plowman, docherty, sps or simpson gets injured he is straight in. Along with Casboult, the hardest I found to leave out.
O'Brien - I have gone with the experience of Martin on his wing. Will hopefully be pushing best 22.
Dow - needs to prove he deserves a spot in the midfield. I don't see him as a forward- he us clearly a genuine mid. He will have to displace Gibbons or Setterfield.
Kennedy - I see him as depth in the short, medium and long term. Will come in to fill a spot in the forward line or an inside mid if there is an injury.
Stocker - in my view will be best 22 by the end of the year but needs to perform to get a spot. With list depth the days of gifting young guys games should be over. Stocker will need to build a tank and demonstrate four quarter consistency in the reserves.
Williamson - coming from a long way back. There is a spot in the near future when Simpson retires but he needs half a season of reserves to build consistency and continuity.
Newnes - difficult to predict where he will start. It depends on whether he hits ti ground running.
Lang - depth.

Should be some solid competition for spots. Like always we will get injuries so most of the guys listed will get a good run throughout the year.

Not sure Levi can play with McKay curnow McGovern weitering Jones and marchbank are in. That's already three key position players at each end of the ground. Also, Simpson will be there abouts

Sorry but no way are Martin and Gov going to be back ups. Both are guaranteed in any best 22 of ours.
