Prediction Your 2020 Best 22 (Post Trade Period)

Remove this Banner Ad

Sorry but no way are Martin and Gov going to be back ups. Both are guaranteed in any best 22 of ours.
You do not need to apologize for a different view.

Simple truth.
I post what I think the team is best as I see it.
I know it is not what majority think but no reason to post only if it fits with what others consider what it should be.
Be boring if we all I only posted from the same viewpoint.

Here's my best 22 assuming everyone's fit...

B: Plowman Jones Marchbank
HB: Docherty Weitering Simpson
C: Walsh E.Curnow SPS
HF: Martin McGovern Cuningham
F: Betts McKay C.Curnow
FOL: Kreuzer Cripps Murphy
INT: Newman Setterfield Fisher Gibbons

EMG: Dow, O'Brien, Silvagni, Newnes

Next in line: Kennedy, Williamson, Casboult, De Koning and that's it. I don't really consider anyone else to be in the frame realistically after these guys.

If i was to fast forward 2022 best 22 it would look like this...

B: Plowman Jones Marchbank
HB: Docherty Weitering SPS
C: Fisher Setterfield O'Brien
HF: Martin McGovern Cuningham
F: Silvagni McKay C.Curnow
FOL: De Koning Cripps Walsh
INT: Newman Gibbons Dow Stocker

Unlucky: Williamson, pick 9 and anyone else good we pick up. Still missing a small forward which pushes someone else out.

I reckon that’s about the starting 18 as best fits now. Interchange will be interesting (Setters being borderline wing in the 18) as JSOS, Casboult, LOB, Stocker, Gibbons, Williamson* could all lay claim for a gig in the best XXII.

Newnes easily gets a run on our wing come round 1. Very good pick up and this trade period is looking an absolute success!

We didnt need big names just yet (although coniglio would have been more than handy), we needed quality players, leaders, good heads around our kids. 1 more year of growth and then its time for the big dance.

Plowman Weitering Newman

Like your midfield. You have Murph at HFF and bench. Who gets a slot on the bench?

HF Fisher C.Curnow SPS
FF Betts McKay McGovern

Interchange: Marchbank, Casboult, JSOS, Cunningham.

Emergencies: Setterfield, Dow, Kennedy/Newnes

Players who I expect to push for constant senior selection: Setterfield, Dow, Kennedy, LOB, Williamson, Goddard, Pittonet, TDK, Stocker, Macreadie.

We are starting to build depth. We could lose 4 or 5 to injury from that lineup and still have capable replacements. (Add Martin and pick 9 and things are starting to look very good).

That's a pretty good list of emergencies.

If Marchbank gets some continuity, I feel that he could end up being our best defender.

Interchange from:
PETREVSKI-SEATON, SETTERFEILD, CASBOULT,
J.Silvani Stocker, Newnes, Fisher, Cunningham, O'Brien, Dow, Kennedy, DeKoning.

I think Doc will start on the wing as that was planned before knee injuries.
Casboult as second ruck.
Ed, Murphy and Simpson are still easily First 18 players.

My current thinking (subject to change daily). This was the hardest in years. Feels like it was a bit stiff for all 4 emergencies and even a few of the next in line. Good signs going forward.

Changes from rd 23 (IN / OUT):
Docherty* / Thomas
Betts* / Deluca
Jones* / Casboult
Marchbank* / Newman
Curnow* / Kennedy
Martin* / Silvagni
Stocker* / Dow
Newnes* / O'Brien

EMG: Casboult, Silvagni, Gibbons, Newman

I've tried to pick our best 22 based around the 15 'locks' (in black). Names in blue are who I think will be there round 1, but will have to have great pre-seasons to keep the others named out of our best side.

B. Plow/Jones/Simmo

HB. Doc/Weiters/Marchbank SPS/NEWMAN/WILLO fighting for this starting HB position

C. Murph/ Cripps/Setterfield NEWNES & O'BRIEN fighting for this wing position

HF. Martin/Charlie/Jack CUNINGHAM/GIBBO/KENNEDY fighting for this HFF position

F. McGovern/Harry/Eddie

R. Kruezer/E. Curnow/Walsh

Interchange: SPS/Cas/Newnes/Fish

* SPS & Fish are highly rated from within and Cas gives us great flexibility as a 2nd ruck and back up KPF or KPB (I also know Teague rates him highly). Newnes provides flexibility with his endurance and ability to go back or on the wing.

Cuningham needs to earn his spot; has all the tricks, a bit of class, knows where the goals are and is explosive...but needs continuity.
Newman is stiff after a great 2019, but Doc and Marchbank are better players
Gibbons is stiff after a great 2019, but Eddie and Martin have been brought in as specialist forwards and others are better onballers. Still rate him highly.
LOB, Stocker & Dow could easily be best 22, and I suspect will be by the end of the year. They need big pre-seasons and consistently strong performances in the VFL.
Kennedy is behind JSOS & Martin as the HFF'r. Needs to play on ball in the VFL and dominate games, changing on the HFF.
Williamson could be anything but is coming from a long way back after missing two years of footy. Needs a good run and continuity before he is talked about for best 22.
Lang, TDK, Macreadie, Cottrell, Polson, Deluca, BSOS, Finbar & Owies are a fair way off for one reason or the other. In saying that the two I am most bullish about from this group are TDK and Cottrell. I'd love to see TDK tear it up in the VFL in his third year and fight Kruez and Cas for that ruck/2nd ruck position. Cottrell is an elite runner who improved his footy significantly by the end of 2019. Could be a smoky to play a few games this year.

Amended with the changes...

Plowman Jones Simpson
Newman Weitering Docherty
Newnes Cripps Walsh

Betts McKay McGovern
Kreuzer Curnow Murphy
Williamson Setterfield SPS Silvagni
EM: Marchbank Gibbons Fisher Casboult

Depth: Dow Stocker O'Brien Kennedy DeKoning Lang Pittonett Goddard etc

Competition for spots will be interesting but I think what we will see is more players being rested. We might see more selections based on how the opposition structure up. Any of the emergencies could interchange with the 22, I'm not fussed. Expecting the depth listed players to make strong cases to be in the 22 or at least in the squad.

Kreuzer playing half the games is likely. I would be happy to see Pittonett come in when we play a team with a gun ruckman like Melbourne or Collingwood. Kreuzer touched up a lot of second rate ruckman last season but he was touched up by the better ruckman.

Marchbank probably comes in when he'f fully fit and the opposition have a very tall forward line or Plowman's form is not where it should be. I've had Marchbank ahead of Plowman a lot but Plowman did have a good season and at this stage is smarter defensively. Marchbank might be quicker and a better kick but not sure he uses it. Both very handy players.

Simpson, Newman, Docherty and Williamson is a good hard running, good kicking hard at it small defensive brigade. Add SPS who might provide a 8th rotation back there and we should be expecting a backline that runs off and pushes hard both ways. It's a quality mix.

Newnes for mine is a starter, good player and ahead of our younger guys at this stage. He and Walsh could provide some serious run. As much as I love Walsh on the ball I think he could be an elite, generational wingman.

Casboult IMO comes in if McKay or Curnow are not quite 100% and that may be the case. Especially McKay. We can play all 3 because Curnow is very mobile but that probably pushes Silvagni and McGovern out and I think both of them could be really good. McGovern fit, I think we might see him performing the duties of a smaller forward a bit more as well as his leading and marking. Powerful runner, could be a real star.

I think selection wise there will be a few things considered. When you have a lot of players who can play it comes down to the little things to split them. Kicking and general skills will come into it. Fitness and best ability to run up and down the ground all day. Toughness, effort and competitiveness. There will be variation between players as to how they attack the contest and apply pressure and their repeat efforts. Physicality is a non-negotiable in becoming a top side. Form. Getting good numbers is going to come into it. A lot of very capable and talented players but to get selected some are going to have to tick these boxes. I've tried to pick the team based on these things.

I'm going to be really excited if we add a tough and physical aspect to our game.

You can add pick 9 to that list, Stocker, TDK.

Hard not to get excited about 2020 :)
