Prediction Your 2020 Best 22 (Post Trade Period)

Remove this Banner Ad

It’s actually a really interesting time for the club. I find it bloody hard to pick a best 22 and players look extremely stiff to miss out but on the other hand we probably had only 10 players who played good to very good AFL standard football last year. To add to that we have guys like Simpson, Betts and Kreuzer where it’s possible they hit the wall very quickly.
It really is shaping up as one of the most interesting pre seasons that I can ever remember. JLT will play huge role in our starting 22 I think. From now on form will play a much bigger role then potential, which in the past has been heavily favoured.

Williamson, Jones, Plowman
Docherty, Weitering, Newman/Simpson
Fisher, Petrevski Seton, Setterfield
Martin, Curnow, McGovern
Betts, McKay, Silvagni

Kreuzer, Cripps, Walsh

Murphy, Curnow, Cuningham, Casboult/Kennedy

Something like this...Williamson hasn't earned an immediate call-up but he is the perfect fit to complete our defensive mix. I want SPS up the ground, where he was recruited to play - poise in traffic and quality forward entries. Forward set-up is pretty straightforward.

Reality is Murphy and Ed will start on the ground just about every week, but this should be a year in which the reliance on them lessens.

Leave a pretty long line up of young guys having to absolutely earn their stripes in the VFL, and some more seasoned types in Newnes and Gibbons for depth.

thouse, a much tighter enforced situation under Bolton and I'm yet to find out about how things go with Teague.
Generally speaking, the 10-12 hours showed up the most and were the safest bet.
Yep. I've had the same trouble. A lot will come down to injury/recovery and pre-season form.

Backline: Jones & Weiters are locks. Willo, Doc, Marchbank will hopefully be fit and ready to go. All competing against Newman, Simmo, Plowman, SPS.

Mids: Crippa, Ed, Murph, Walsh, SPS, Fish, Setterfield, Dow, Stocker, Kennedy, JSOS can all play through there

Wings: All of a sudden we have a plethora of options: Walsh/O'Brien/Newnes/Murph/Fish/Simmo/Setterfield/SPS/Willo/Cottrell

Forwards: Charlie & Harry racing time to be fit for the start of the season. Levi & McGovern playing the KPF roles with JSOS? Kennedy, TDK trying to find a spot. You'd think Jack Martin & Eddie are locks. Cuningham, Fish & Gibbons fighting for the other small forward spot.

All being equal, the players who can play multiple positions will probably be selected if there is a battle for a certain position. JSOS & Setterfield should be locks for this reason.

LOCKS
  1. Jones
  2. Weiters
  3. Plowman (3rd in our B & F - rated highly by the club)
  4. SPS
  5. Simmo (I can't see him playing 2's in the early rounds - may change later in the year, but not at the start)
  6. Walsh
  7. Cripps
  8. Martin
  9. McGovern
  10. Betts
  11. Kreuzer
  12. Setterfield
  13. E Curnow
  14. Murph
  15. Silvagni
  16. Cas (love his versatility - 2nd ruck, back up KPF & KPD)
  17. Fisher (rated highly by the coaches - can't see him playing 2's)

* Doc, Charlie, Harry are obvious locks IF fit.

THAT'S 20 LOCKS IF ALL FIT.

How do we fit in Dow, Stocker, Newnes, Cuningham, Newman, Marchbank, Gibbons, Kennedy, LOB, TDK, Cottrell etc?

He was amazing in 2019, but I don't see Cas as a lock for the seniors in 2020.

He's every chance of playing in R1 though with injury clouds over Marchbank, McKay and Curnow.

I think Newnes plays in round one. Now I just have to work out who he edges out!

I agree.

Think he'll play plenty of senior footy in 2020, and is being overlooked by too many, just as Newman was in 2019.

The 2020 Consensus 22 is live for those playing at home...

I thought I would have a stab at this

B: Simmo, Jones, Plowman
HB: Docherty, Weitering, SPS
C: Walsh, Cripps, Newnes
Foll: Kreuzer, Setterfield, Murphy
HF: Martin, Curnow, McGovern
F: Betts, McKay, Fisher
Int: Dow (Midfield rotation) Cunningham (midfield/forward rotation) E Curnow (midfield forward rotation) Casboult (Ruck/KPF/KPD)

There are many who missed out, but I thought I needed to put Casboult in as there is no other ruck insurance and if any of the other key position players are having an off day he can fill in. Players who missed out and have a chance of getting in by season end would be
Newman - Depth really, but could easily come in with loss of form or injury
Marchbank - Not convinced on Marchbank, but could easily come in if injuries or form require
TDK- Needs to put some more muscle on, and should replace Kruezer if there are injuries
LOB - Just needs to improve disposal under pressure, but great depth and should replace Murphy over time
Williamson - Simmo/Doc probably need to be managed this year and he should replace them when they need to be managed, Simmo is getting on, and Doc has had multiple injuries
Kennedy - Need to figure out where he fits, doesn't seem to have pace for midfield in existing mix, but seems a good option up forward, maybe comes in if Fisher can't fill need up forward
JSOS - Depending on form, but would be replacement if forward/ Mid injuries
Gibbons - Another depth player, but could replace midfielder / Forward
Stocker - Replacement midfielder, but should replace E Curnow over time
Pittonet - Depth in ruck

Was a hard exercise, but really tried to get some size and grunt in midfield, speed on outside, run off half back. Locking down good forward lines may be difficult, as there are plenty of intercept defenders. Forward line looks creative, but first few games will depend on fitness of Farry and Charlie, but TDK could come in if either are injured, and potentially Casboult. Just have to give a contest if ball comes to them, but in reality the main scorers should be Charlie, Betts, and Jack.

We're going to pick 7 defenders in the 22 eve and play him as a defensive mid, and if you really wanted 7 I'd probably bring in Marchbank or Williamson for Cunningham. That though doesn't leave a lot of midfield rotations so you'd have to rotate Martin and Fisher through midfield.

We're going to pick 7 defenders in the 22 every week.

Sorry, got to get used to posting. I'd rotate Newnes down back and play him as a defensive mid, and if you really wanted 7 I'd probably bring in Marchbank or Williamson for Cunningham. That t doesn't leave a lot of midfield rotations so you'd have to rotate Martin and Fisher through midfield, or move Casboult in for one of the forwards, or use Harry as second ruck, although with his injuries that would be a big risk.

Under Teague, we have been playing with fewer true midfield rotations. Of course the half-forwards push up into the midfield and sometimes pinch-hit, but we pick 7 backs, 7 mids (including 2 true wings), 7 forwards and a ruck. For naming a best 22, I think you should be following this structure.

Best 22 this year is the toughest it’s been for a very, very, very long time. Here’s mine but...

Docherty Jones Marchbank
Plowman Weitering Newman
Walsh Cripps Petrovski-Seton
JSilvagni CCurnow Martin
McGovern McKay Betts
Kruezer Setterfield Murphy
Simpson Fisher O’Brien Dow

Kennedy, Cuningham, Williamson, Stocker - very unlucky.

Just for fun, i'm going to try something different and going back to school to pick my best 22...
Get all our players to line up, assuming everyone is fit and available
I'm going to choose one at a time: best player, leader, whatever - forget about positions, heights etc... just choose who do I want in my team
I'm sure I'm missing someone, but here is my list.
I can't believe how high I've got Walsh already.

I've tried to do this a few times now, but I just can't get there.

This is the best squad we have had in years, and it will continue to improve.

The best I can do at this stage is put forward a list of "locks" ie. those who I think are certainties to feature when fully fit. And at this point in time I have 15.

Competition for spots will be red hot and that alone will lift the performances at both AFL and VFL level.

If injuries finally give us a little respite this year, we'll be well and truly on our way. If we get kissed on the dick to the levels Brisbane has over the past few years, well...

The consensus 22 over the next month or two will be fascinating. There will not be a clear consensus IMO.

This is what I've settled on, for now -

B: Plowman - Jones - Docherty
HB: SPS - Weitering - Newman
C: Walsh - Cripps - Newnes
HF: Cuningham - McKay - Martin
F: Betts - C Curnow - McGovern
R: Kreuzer - Setterfield - Murphy
INT: Simpson - Fisher - E Curnow - J Silvagni

Meaning we'll have some very decent footballers running around at VFL level.

DEF - Marchbank, Williamson, Macreadie, Ramsay, B Silvagni, Goddard
MID - Dow, O'Brien, Stocker, Gibbons, Philp, Cottrell
FWD - Casboult, Kennedy, Lang, Polson, O'Dwyer, Honey, Phillips, Owies
R: Pittonet, TDK

Dare I say it, we've got some serious depth at the club right now...

All I want for Christmas is a smooth run with injury which has largely eluded us over the past few years. If we can remain relatively injury free it's not unreasonable to suggest we could see dramatic improvements on the field, at both levels.

Simpson Jones Williamson
Marchbank Weitering Docherty
SPS Crippa E Curnow
Gibbons McKay Cuningham
J Silvagni C Curnow Betts
Kruezer Walsh Murphy

Bench Stocker Fisher Dow Setterfield

Back Up:
Martin for wings or half forwards or bench guys
Kennedy for Crippa or Setterfield or E Curnow
Plowman for Williamson and Marchbank
Casboult for Jones, Weitering and McKay
Newman for medium and small defenders
M McGovern for J Silvagni or Curnow
Pittonet for Kruezer
O'Brien for wings or guys starting from the bench
Lang for Cuningham, Martin or Betts

Development:
Pick 9 player for midfield or small forward specialist
De Koning for key forward/ruck areas
Owies for small forward/half forward areas
Ben Silvagni for Key Forward and Key Defence
Cottrell for defence or wings
Macreadie for key defence or third tall defender or bust
Finbar O'Dwyer for where he grows into best suited. Way too early to tell for me on little I seen.
Polson for midfield only or bust
H Goddard for key defence or bust
Pick 43 player

If we can get Williamson, Cuningham and Murphy on field over twice as much as last season and Martin actually plays to potential I actually think we will make the finals. If Charlie comes back ft and well , even if he misses a few opening games, I think 14 wins is not out of our reach. I just cannot help but think the 2015 draftees will lead the way for our draftees from 2016 to 2018. A forward line with Betts and Cuningham around McKay, Charlie and Jack would be very exciting to see as season moves on. Huge upside imo this coming season. Cohesion that was issue at start of last season should be thing of the past as 2020 goes deeper. We have not got too many players from other clubs to adjust to, too much.

I hope to see this 22 on the park at some point this year:

FB: Plowman, Jones, Marchbank
HB: SPS, Weitering, Docherty
C: Murphy, Setterfield, Walsh
HF: Cuningham, C Curnow, Martin
FF: Betts, McKay, McGovern

R: Kreuzer, Cripps, Fisher

INT: Casboult, Simpson, Dow, E Curnow

Super tough to pick a best 22. Quality names such as Williamson, O'Brien, Newnes, Gibbons, JSOS and Newman aren't in this squad and all can be easily slotted in there.

Thought I'd make a quick couple of mentions to a few inclusions that could have a question mark over their heads:

Levi: Mr Fix it. Had a ripper year and showed proved he could play play any tall spot on the ground to a decent or high standard, especially back, which I would never have expected. Kreuze is still our No.1 ruck until those wheels fall off the tractor for good. Cas is in here to play second fiddle with the upside of flexibility to fill in around the ground when required, over the likes of Pittonet (depth) and TDK (while he's still developing).

Cunners: What I would give to see him have a full year without an injury. Has an absolute truck load of x-factor, pace, a wicked sidestep when in the guts and just makes things happen. He's super important to our squad going forward over the next few years, and to me he screams a finals player/Norm Smith Medallist. Has the tools over players such as JSOS and maybe Gibbons or Kennedy who could also play that role of a mid size forward rolling through the midfield.

Simmo: A few might have others over him at this point, and something tells me at some point in 2020 there will be good cases for it. For me I think his on field leadership (both vocally and by actions) is absolutely invaluable. He's more in the mix to play a role on the wing or half forward this year. Still did Simmo things this year with the head over the footy, still tackles hard and still does the repeat efforts. Seems to have that bit of pace let in the tank, but slightly more prone to make a wrong decision in his twilight. I think naturally one of O'Brien, Williamson or Newnes (maybe Newman depending on position) are his long term replacements, but still deserves his spot until he proves he can no longer play his standard of footy, he's heart and soul of this club.

Paddy Dow: Upside seems to be a bit of a trend in the post, but again another that has it. Had a really underwhelming 2019 for mine and I expected him to build from his first year in which he showed a lot of good signs. I've mentioned it before but with all his abilities, I just can't see how he doesn't make the most of it all. Towards the back end of this year he played more forward (although I see him as a mid with maybe resting stints forward, not as a fwd with stints in the mid) so the players contending for this sort of role are a mix of Gibbons, Kennedy, and maybe JSOS and Lang.

gtfo with your willow emergency talk.........

2020 needs to be the year the next generation takes over. I'll be happy to see Casboult and Ed playing in the VFL not because they have poor form but because the younger players have over taken them. Possibly Simpson and Murphy too.

Player who are 100% locks for best 22
Betts, Cripps, Docherty, Jones, Kreuzer, Murphy, Newman, Plowman, Walsh and Weitering.

Potential best 22 that should or could step up in 2020.

Cunningham- his pace, foot skills and ability to kick a goal makes him prefect for a high half forward or wing.

Curnow- if he can get his body right, could be anything. Will be an A grade player just a matter of when.

Dow- loved watching him explode out of the stoppages but hated watching him kick the ball. IMO his kicking was more mental than ability.

Fisher- natural midfielder, reads the play, great skills and a hard work but he get pushed around too much.

Gibbons- solid first year in 2019 and I'll love to see what he can do with another preseason.

Kennedy- is he the inside mid to help Cripps or a 3rd tall forward? Played he's best footy up forward but can he over take McGovern and JSOS.

Martin- inconsistent performer at the gold coast, can he be a superstar or just a tease?

Marchbank- when fit, is best 22 but with Jones, Weitering and Plowman are we too tall down back?

McGovern- dangerous around goals and a good Mark but I question his hunger to be a star.

McKay- started 2019 in great form but look tired late. Kicked 26 goals needs to closer to 50. Has all the talent to be a leading goal kicker in the comp.

Newnes- looks like depth to me.

O'Brien- showed great from later in 2019, just needs to continue that form in 2020.

SPS- 10th in the B&F was a good result but IMO with his skill set, attitude and potential too be one of our greats.

Setterfield- after 2 ACLs was better than I thought in 2019 but could be better in 2020. Superstar

JSOS- love his attitude, skills and versatility. He's best 22 but as a tagger, inside mid, 3rd tall forward or defender.

Stocker- looks like he's going to be a player but may not be ready to step up in 2020.

Williamson- needs to get his body right and back in form.

It's been a long time we have had this much talent on our list. I just hope they have the drive to win.

B - Simpson Jones Williamson
HB - Docherty Weitering SPS
C - Walsh Cripps Murphy
R - Kreuzer Setterfield E Curnow
HF - Fisher C Curnow Martin
F - McGovern McKay Betts

B - Marchbank Cuningham Dow Stocker

Plowman will be picked but I honestly don't know who to take out, Williamson will be better imo

Obviously injuries will ensure guys get games but I can't find games for the below at full strength and think all of them are AFL quailty

Plowman
Newman
Newnes
O'Brien
Casboult
Kennedy
JSOS

Yeah gone buy all of there would be regulars and have been despite still developing, I can't see the first years getting a game

I think we are going to sneak into the 8 and the odds of 3.40 are very generous
