Looking at these teams particularly the recent ones, makes me realize Australia may be the most boring team in the world.

Since the 70's we've played the same 4 bowler (3 paceman) format in most tests. We haven't produced one decent all rounder in that time to change team balance.

Even within this framework all the paceman all about bowl around the same pace - no slower swing specialists. The spinners all throw ball up, with no mystery bowlers with unorthodox actions or even quickish pace.

Sublime stroke players like Martyn or Mark Waugh are exceptions while a thrashing machine like Gilchrist is the one real standout.

Boring.

Gilchrist (also an under rated gloveman because of Charnel Nein and Healy sledges)

not sure how you can call some of our greats boring.

australia traditionally pick their best 6 bats, keeper, spinner and 3 quicks and varies from time to time depending on the pitch.

the format works, they've been the most successful test team over time .

'genuine' allrounders don't grow on trees (like miller) and we've had our share of batting allrounders and bowling allrounders and even what you'd call some 'white ball' allrounders. lets hope green can be the next big thing, it's still early days , although i feel over time he may be a batting allrounder or transform how steve waugh did into a batsman only and be more than capable of batting at 5.

with some upcoming tours to the subcontinent we may see 2 spinners and the importance of green's bowling.

not real sure of the value of a 5th bowler in test cricket at times, although it's handy if one of the top 6 can bowl a few when required, on a tough wicket or if one of the big 4 are slightly fatigued/injured etc. if your best 4 bowlers can't get the job done, then not too sure why we'd be relying on the 5th.

If you think watching Australia over the past 40-50 years is boring than cricket may just not be for you.

You mean 2 matches in his 11. The other 9 he did stuff all and couldn't make a run.

Played 11 more tests than I did though ;)
Yeah, might be rose tinted glasses , and he probably doesn't belong in that other company. But we didn't win too many then, and we haven't had that any great spinners in the last 40odd years.

it's your squad, so your call.

i do remember him playing but i don't recall him being used as a nightwatchmen - what the !!

Dutchy was one of a string of leggies we used from the late 70s until Warnie came along in the early 90s and changed the game. The likes of Terry Jenner, Jimmy Higgs, Tony Mann, Peter Sleep. All good bowlers, and all had their days in the sun - esp. at Sydney. I think Mann was the guy who made a ton as nightwatchman, and Sleep was a genuine all-rounder. Higgsy couldn't bat to save himself. Don't recall Dutchy being any good with the bat either.

Warnie was in a different league, and McGill very unlucky to have overlapped with him, as he would be a clear second to Warnie amongst this group.

Aussie team has had same format for almost that entire time. Would prefer more diversity in player type, approach, surnames etc
