B: Hibberd May Jetta
HB: Frost Lever Hunt/KK
C: Stretch Brayshaw Jones
HF: Neal-Bullen McDonald Melksham
F: Spargo Weideman Hannan/Preuss
R: Gawn Viney Oliver
Int: Harmes Petracca Salem Vandeberg

Stretch gets picked because he finally showed some form this season plus he’s such a hard worker. Will surely be given first crack at the wing spot.

Need Neal-Bullen at HF for his gut run and defensive work, he stays there until Spargo shows the same level of fitness. Probably has the least hold on his spot though as he had a stagnant 2018.

Reckon Jonesy will have a solid 2019 on the wing after slimming down a little bit. By the end of the season he could well be outside the best 22.

One of Hunt/KK probably more wishful than anything. But I’m never upset to see Hunt named. That spot is a pre season battle.

Not much F50 pressure or ground level threat will again be our weakness so praying that Jeffy gets back to his best or we draft some decent smalls.
Impressive list, probably the best in the comp.

HB: Laird Keith Milera

HF: Lynch Himmelberg Douglas

I’d expect 5th-8th. Finished the year 6-3 post bye. Talent wise behind WC, Richmond, Melbourne and Collingwood.

Grundy, Beams, Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Adams, Trealor, Phillips, Sier, Stephenson and Varcoe is a ridiculously good midfield. The other forward and back lines are fairly average in comparison to the rest of the comp, but probably the deepest first-rate midfield in the comp.

I am biased but I would have thought "average" is a bit harsh (though I guess it is a pretty even comp).

The forward line produced 4 38 plus small/mid goal kickers for the first time ever with the two talls kicking 54 goals between them....and that didn't include Elliott

Howe is star and Maynard, Moore, Langdon and Crisp are all still on the upward curve of their careers based on their ages....but perhaps average is fair

Beefed up the backline with May and made some investments in outside run and class over the last couple of years with Fritsch, Kade Kolo, a healthy Vanders and others that hopefully pay off next year.

The only area yet to be addressed is a gun crumbing and pressure forward.

It’s a highly productive forward line - one of the best in the comp now with Elliott too, and our back line soldiered on to become one of the best in the league in the back half of the year, and without key defenders too

The thing is though, it's easier to defend with a deep midfield, which pressures a lot, and it's easy to feed easy goals to forwards if you have a deep dominating midfield.

I'm not saying the backline or forward line are horrible any means, but there are teams with better back and forward lines on paper.

How quickly Kolodjashnij comes on is crucial for us. If he can hit form by R1 we solve one of our greatest weaknesses.

Ins and outs to best 22 from our last game of 2018:
In: Wingard, Scully, O'Meara, Stratton, Birchall, Ceglar
Out: Burton, Mirra, Nash, Duryea, Henderson, Howe

Definitely a better team than the one that went out in straight sets when you look at the ins and outs, but lots of teams in the top half of the ladder improved during trade week so not at all certain about how we'll travel next year. If Scully gets back on the park soon, and we start the season with a fully fit list, top 8 should be achievable again, and as with most teams (but probably more so with Hawthorn), luck with injuries will likely dictate how high.

I think he'll have a similar season to Vince this year. Play around half or more than half of the season's games before finishing his career at Casey being pushed out by one of our young bucks like a Baker.

Yup, a sad finish. Always thought you'd do well out of him in the first year of the contract and he'd be serviceable in the second, but that 3 years was one too long. I guess he probably wouldn't have moved for less though, given he still had a 1 year contract at Hawthorn, and I don't think we categorically ruled out another 1 year extension, just told him it wasn't a certainty. A 3 year deal versus 1 year certain with any extension uncertain was an easy choice for Lewis. Still see it as a win/win. Added some valuable experience to your list at a time you needed it, and allowed us cap space and opportunity for players like Morrison/Worpel/Howe to get games. Never fun to see a player that was a champion of your club run around in the seconds team of another club before retiring though :-(

Who knows, maybe he'll surprise and squeeze another decent year out of himself. You have enough leaders now that he probably needs to do it on form rather than 'out there for leadership'.
