Preview Your Best 22 for 2018

I love the fact we have a player in his prime that has shown he is "best 22" Pyke had in 2016 and only out last year due to injury and SANFL suspension.

It will drive the younger players to be better as they have to earn their spot ahead of him. If they are better, we are better. If not Cheney is still quite good.

Totally agree

Pyke definetly doesnt play favorites although some thinks he does, he wants his best team on the park whilst we have this opportunity to grab a flag, and by best team I mean his best team

Cheney Gibson Keath Galluci Milera Doedee Otten ROB hampton seedsman Mackay will all need to get the runs on the board to get a crack in teh best 22, pre season will be great to watch with so many players wanting a gig in the A's and if they dont perform they wont get one

Competition for spots will improve our team as long as selection is done that way which it is ATM

Was looking at our current list here:

https://www.draftguru.com.au/lists/2018/adelaide

Sorted by "DRAFTED":

draft_pick.png

Compare it to other lists here:

https://www.draftguru.com.au/lists/2018

Our breakdown for when our players were FIRST drafted is:

ADELAIDE
Underage / Zone / Prelist = 4
PSD = 1
1 - 10 = 1
11 - 20 = 7
21 - 30 = 2
31 - 40 = 0
41 - 50 = 5
51 - 60 = 3
60+ = 5
Rookie = 10

Compare that to Richmond:

RICHMOND
Underage / Zone / Prelist = 2
PSD = 1
1 - 10 = 6
11 - 20 = 8
21 - 30 = 2
31 - 40 = 4
41 - 50 = 2
51 - 60 = 2
60+ = 4
Rookie = 7

Could probably add in the average number of games in 2017 per bracket for a bit deeper indication.

Brown Talia Doedee
Laird Keath Douglas
Sloane MCrouch Gibbs
Lynch McGovern Knight
Betts Walker Gallucci

Jacobs BCrouch Greenwood

Kelly Milera/Himmelberg Hampton Mackay/Atkins

Emergencies: Hartigan Seedsman Jenkins

Captain: Walker as co- captain along with either Sloane or MCrouch. Need a co-captain in the midfield imo. If sloane is leaving would give co-captaiin to mcrouch.

Draft: Hoping we get either jack higgins, hunter clark or aiden bonar. Brander a possibility if these three are taken before our pick.

Injuries: Smith to hopefully return to afl side around round 20 if all goes well.

Gibbs wont play wing, he will play HBF if not in the guts, you will see Milera, Mackay Galluci, Atkins occupy those poitions, Gibbs strength is his leg not his two way running, its the whole reason Mackay gets a gig he runs pretty damn hard and for a long time

My preferred 22...

B: Brown Talia Doedee*
HB: Laird Hartigan Gibson*
C: Milera* Sloane Douglas
HF: Lynch Walker Gallucci*
F: Betts McGovern Keath*
R: Jacobs M Crouch Gibbs
Int: B Crouch, Greenwood, Kelly, Atkins*

(* = players 17-22 and under most selection pressure)

Players 23-30: Jenkins, Mackay, Knight, Seedsman, Poholke, Pick 12, Hampton

Break glass in case of emergency options: O'Brien (if Jacobs goes down), Cheney (multiple injuries in defence), Otten (basically only ever to replace one of Tex or Talia), CEY (multiple injuries in midfield leading to a rookie upgrade)

Possible debutants other than Poholke and Pick 12: Jarman (if upgraded)

Scrap heap: Dear

Further development required in 2018 before being considered for senior selection in 2019 and beyond: Davis, Signorello, Himmelberg, Pick 39, Pick 77 (if used), Edwards

Fully aware that my hypothetical 22 will almost definitely never run out onto the park, but that's my ideal lineup for a variety of reasons. A big part of me wants Seedsman in for Atkins, but we need that left sided outside player for team balance a bit more.

Cant see Douglass like gibbs playing as an outside mid when you have players like Atkins, Mackay,Milera, Galluci capable of some serious kilomtres at a reasonable pace in running both ways

I would like to see us rotate our players, including our key defenders to keep them fresh... with a horses for courses policy depending on the opposition's forward line.

2 of Talia, Hartigan & Keath
2 of Keath, Doedee & Kelly

Obviously our better players play most games, but no reason why they can't be rested at times & no excuse why they should be carrying injuries into finals.
Hallelujah! .....

Would be a great way to make sure we have good backups if we get injuries during finals. There have been signs mentioned that Pyke likes a stable line-up - a regular, deliberate rotation also has a kind of stability to it.

Yep, with the view to have a well balanced squad, the last few years we've gone in with a limited amount of people who would have played enough during the season to play finals, no pressure on spots. Stand up or you are out.

Going by my depth chart.

I have 15 absolute certainties to be picked (bold)
5 who probably are safe based on last year (blue)
6 who would be a chance based on missing 2016 to injury or youth (red)

That already gets us to 26.

Add in Gibson, of whom we have no idea what the coach is thinking, Mackay who, f-me, will probably still get a game, and we have a pretty good fight for spots.

Poholke will depend on the pre-season - could be a bolter. I think Otten is now pure depth (fricken hope so), CEY a rookie, Sig still a year away (very young), And no idea tbh about Davis, O'Brien and Himmileberg

Key Defender: Talia, Hartigan, Doedee, Keath (or 4th Key forward), Otten,
Small Defender: Laird, Brown, Kelly, Cheney, Gibson, Poholke, [Smith (inj)]
Inside Mid: Sloane, M Crouch, B Crouch, Greenwood, Hampton, Signorello, Ellis-Yolmen,
Outside Mid: Gibbs, Douglas, Knight, Atkins, Seedsman, Milera, Mackay
Mobile forward: Lynch, Gallucci, Davis
Key forward: Walker, McGovern, Jenkins, Himmelberg, Dear
Small forward: Betts, Jarman
Ruck: Jacobs, O'Brien, Hunter

AFL side

FB: Luke Brown ~ Daniel Talia ~ Tom Doedee
HB: Rory Laird ~ Alex Keath ~ Jake Kelly
C: Sam Gibson ~ Matt Crouch ~ Rory Sloane
R: Sam Jacobs ~ Brad Crouch ~ Bryce Gibbs
HF: Tom Lynch ~ Taylor Walker ~ Rory Atkins
FF: Eddie Betts ~ Josh Jenkins ~ Mitch McGovern
B: Wayne Milera ~ Hugh Greenwood ~ Jordan Galluci ~ Richard Douglas

Draft? Hoping it falls like this: Higgins, Petty, Crowden (Edwards, CEY, Murphy)

SANFL side

Murphy ~ Hartigan ~ Otten
Cheney ~ Petty ~ Signorello
Seedsman ~ CEY ~ Mackay
Obrien ~ Hampton ~ Poholke
Jarman ~ Himmelburg ~ Knight

Edwards ~ Crowden ~ Hunter

Smith to join late next year hopefully in the AFL side.

I know I may cop a bit s**t for this,
But does getting Fogerty in the Draft push Knight on the Outer. As that is the one position I can See Fogerty playing First up next year that half forward Flanker with runs in the Middle. that has a defensive edge. And Gibson is a better tagger/stopper.

Before I get hammered, I have already MacKay for Milera/Gibson. And expect Douglas and Atkins to be playing for his spot every week, more with Pohokle, Signorella, Jarman and Hopefully Murphy guaranteed improvements, (guaranteed due to our history of development)
Running Half Back position has now been improved with Milera, Hampton, Cheney and Andrew McPherson latter in the year, Mainly because I cannot see the Crows blooding to new faces in backlines. at the start of the year.

Brown, Hartigan, Kelly
Liard, Talia, Doedee
Gibson, M Crouch, Sloane
Gallucci, Walker, Lynch
Betts, JJ, McGovern
Jacobs, Gibbs, B Crouch
i/c, Milera, Fogerty, Greenwood, Douglas

I can see that happening as Knight has certainly stagnated. If prefer to see Knight take the next step and for Douglas to take less minutes though.

Basically, no. Fogarty won't have anywhere near the fitness to play at AFL level let alone play the role of Knight. He could get away with playing a Dan Menzel type role but we don't need one of them.
Knight I think will be replaced by Gibson with Milera replacing Mackay/Seed.

I love the fact that Gibson was given a second chance and he sounds like a great person, but I really don't want to see him given games by choice.

To cover for injury as insurance and to up our competitiveness at training, yes.

After the year Douglas had knight would want to improve a shitload to contribute what Douglas did or the team will go backwards

Reckon Douglas will play less as the Year progresses, but he is one of those players that will be working harder this pre-season togett in front of the kids, Hard to tell with him.

I hope he's working hard to push the kids and get them ready.

At his age, and for the good of the team he needs to become a real leader and that means not always focusing on yourself, but making sure team success comes first.

I agree, Knight didn't come on as hoped this last year, still rushing possession and struggling to not fade out of games. But, his fitness would be far, far superior to Fog's atm, and thus I think he holds his spot. For mine, if Knight doesn't come on this year, he may end up delisted.... He doesn't do nearly enough in the forward 50 pressure wise for someone who doesn't accumulate or kick many goals.

Love the kid's intent and all, but he will need to step up soon.
