Universal Love Your best 22 you have seen (state from when)

All of these guys played in my lifetime. Some I was probably too young to fully appreciate. I've picked guys for a number of reasons. Some that were my favourites, others that my old man told stories about and built up a mythology around. Some are tough bastards and others beautifully skilled. Many a combination of those reasons.

B: ~ N Maxwell ~ C Kelly ~ S Burns
HB: ~ H Shaw ~ B Reid ~ J Clement

C: ~ D Millane ~ N Buckley ~ G Wright
Fol: ~ D Monkhurst ~ S Pendlebury ~ D Swan

HF: ~ A Didak ~ T Cloke ~ D Thomas
FF: ~ P Daicos ~ S Rocca ~ G Brown

Int: ~ C Tarrant ~ P Williams ~ L Ball ~ L Davis

For those interested in say 70s onwards this would be a Hawthorn best side.
Scary actually. I've just put this together quite quickly as I don't worry too much about them

B. G Ayres ~ C Langford ~ D Parkin
HB. L Hodge ~ P Knights ~ S Burgoyne
C. J Platten ~ S Mitchell ~ S Crawford
HF. D Brereton ~ L Franklin ~ G Buckenarra
F. J Dunstall ~ P Hudson ~ D Jarman
R. D Scott ~ M Tuck ~ Matthews (c)
I. P Salmon ~ J Roughead ~ J Lewis ~ P Crimmins
C. A Jeans

Think you missed Dipper, or left out because it would take too long to type his name?
Out suspended maybe?

Good thread, will have a go at something later :thumbsu:

Interesting point.

Nah, left out Dipierdomenico because he was a good player but way less than sometimes thought.
A good ordinary player who to his credit got the most out of himself.

But not in my top Hawks

That you can leave out a Brownlow winner says a lot for how strong they have been.

That Dipper won a Brownlow and so many of those other Hawk champions missed out says a lot about the Brownlow...

Tough gig!!

Unlucky - Gayfer, S Rocca, Beams, Jolly, Thomas, Licuria, B Johnson

A Rocca gets the nod over his brother narrowly, to help out in the ruck.

I'd like to think Grundy will be in this team as ruckman within a couple of years

I'd leave woewodin out of Melb too
I'd leave brain wilson out

Just means he had a good year, and was very low votes that year, I think a win with 17 votes.

it's all subjective, but Dipper played in 5 Premierships (Maybe 4?), those Melbourne guys played in none.
From what I remember, he wasn't a "flash in the pan" or something... Really good player in a great side for a long time...
Pretty sure he earned his stripes too - was in the ressies for a long time?
Anyway, it's Hawthorn so IDGAF, but I would have him ahead of Lewis from what I have seen, and a few in there that I don't know...
Happy enough to bow down becasue not seen enough live :thumbsu:

Fair enough too.
God points you made.
Dip played in flags, 1978 (he played great that day) 1983, 1986, 1988 and 1989 so 5.

I'm starting to see your point of view.

Was very strong willed, made contests etc, tough.
I'm amending my view, maybe? he was better than good.
Though not making their best 22 but gee that effort in 1989 GF was great.

Great story when he was not pleasing Yabby Jeans, maybe being a jerk, being a smart Alec to Jeabpns, well, Jeans grabbed him threw him against the lockers and let him know who was boss.
Dip was very respectful thereafter....

Love your coach.

Absolutely!

Great team, yes we had some players really unfortunate when the big dance came.

And poor old Rene Kink missed so many times.
And then went to Essendon and the big fellow copped another grand final loss....

5 posts this time....

Good post but

That was a brief incarnation from Bucksboys. Mods didn't even let him warm up.
Yes indeed.

I just love how he will always be Bucksboys....

Great name too for an avatar

Been thinking about the coach selection a bit today, maybe should have gone Hafey? Really don't know, both are from a time when I barely knew who the coach was.

R. Shaw and D. Cloke are 2 guys who I probably should have squeezed in, but they have a son / brother at another club now so that counts against them...

as for Rene, when someone is called "The Incredible Hulk" and you are under 10, you are bound to look out for him!

and Lonie, well I liked him because he was a great kick, something we didn't have a lot of at the time (or other times).

Would love to see a team from the '59-'89 era from someone who saw them live and can remember.

The challenge for the mods is to nail him after the first post. 5 is not bad but they should be able to whittle that record down.
I'm looking for the one post.

You know he could do the one post, hang back a bit, then get the hammer

One post gold

Yes we think alike here. It will be worth screen saving his 1 post Banned profile. I might even change out Squiddy and use it as my avatar. Hope the mods can lift their game and pull it off.

Must be Bob Rose.
Tom Hafey always had his 4 flags to keep him warm at night.

Bob Rose lost three flags by 15 points in total, yikes!

Such a great great great shame

Yes this is a mods excercise in the making.

we have laid down the challenge

On second thoughts though I wouldn't want it to cause Bucksboys to give up his reincarnations. They are somewhat of a board institution now and I've grown rather fond of the timelord.
Put them all together
There is some sort of posting there... almost TD numbers
