C: C.Bradley R.Ebert P.Matera

HF: G.Ablett snr W.Carey(c) W.Johnston

F: T.Lockett J.Dunstall B.Cable

COACH: Ron Barassi

Can see the merit in all your selections here, though could argue till the cows come home on some of them....A highly skilled side indeed.

I was thinking about the successes of hawthorn say in last 5 decades so from what I Rembrandt seeing (Hudson gets a little leeway as remember his name but his play specific mid 70s so its mid 1970s time onwards, thereabouts.
Very powerful team.
I’m a selector more of roughly 6 defenders of which two must be key positions; 6 forwards of which 2 must be key forwards; 6 on ballers of which 1 must be the ruck, leftovers might go wings if required as on ball division; 4 interchange for the ones that are unlucky to miss; NB: probably a little top heavy on forwards for size but it’s the best I can work it out. Do we leave out Don Scott for Paul Salmon? Salmon the better ruck, Scott a real leader, dilemma?
Who is coach, Allan Jeans for me.

Hawthorn 1970s onwards

B. G Ayres ~ C Langford ~ S Burgoyne
HB. L Hodge ~ P Knights ~ R Dipierdomenico
C. S Mitchell ~ J Platten ~ S Crawford
HF. L Franklin ~ D Brereton ~ G Buckenara
F. J Dunstall ~ P Hudson ~ D Jarman
R. D Scott ~ M Tuck ~ L Matthews (c)
I. P Salmon ~ T Wallace ~ C Rioli ~ P Crimmins

That Hawthorn team is amazing!
Damn they have been spoiled the last 40 years.
Three Brownlow winners make the centre line.
Three who have kicked a ton in the forward line. Plus Jarman, Buckenara & Dermie for razzle dazzle.
Tuck & Matthews on the ball.
All six defenders are great players.
Cyril & Crimmins to come off the bench.
Jeans as coach with Clarkson, Kennedy & Parkin all in the box.
Strewth!!

Imagine if that Hawthorn side played against the 1985 Essendon Grand Final team, or the Geelong 2007 combination in a match. How would the Hawks go against those two great teams of the modern era?

If you went best teams of each club say over a nice few decades I’d think hawthorn are too strong overall.
Essendon likely are next then Geelong.

But good BBQ topic.

Not with the state we're in.

I'd have Terry Wallace in the centre, Matthews to the forward pocket and Platten roving. I'd also have Josh Gibson in Dipper's spot at hb. Dipper would either miss out completely or he would go to a wing, Mitchell into the guts and Plough would miss out.

Fair enough.

But Matthews was the best player of the lot, he should be used where it counts, the engine room :)

C : M.Turner G.Williams P.Couch
HF : G.Ablett Snr C.Mooney P.Chapman

Matthews kicked over 900 goals, he had seasons where he was permanent forward and others where he played 2nd rover and played a lot forward.

Platten averaged 0.88 goals per game, Matthews averaged 2.76 goals per game. Matthews kicked over 50 goals in a season on 10 occasions, the best Platten did in a season was 33.

Platten played in 4 premierships, '86, '88, '89 and '91 he kicked a combined total of 93 goals in those years.
Matthews played in 4 premierships, '71, '76, '78 and '83 he kicked a combined total of 264 in those years.

Plough would be lucky to make a second-string Hawk 22.
