Rick Kennedy absolute gentleman off the field ,,dad in law to triple premiership captain Trent Cotchin,,think plugger was Qouted as saying that Rick Kennedy was the only full back that actually scared him
Rick was my old mans favourite, unfortunately I just missed his career, was only a little tucker when he retired

Geez Cotchys kids gunna have some decent genes then

Exactly
My mum lived in the same street as herb Henderson, ,my mum and her mum and dad all went to the 54 grand final, met rick Kennedy a few times really nice guy

Bugger me this caused some personal angst. But I went with:

B: Gavin Wanganeen Dustin Fletcher Tom Fitzmaurice
HB: Barry Davis Wally Buttsworth Norm McDonald
C: Reg Burgess Bill Hutchison Michael Long
HF: James Hird Ken Fraser Terry Daniher (vc)
F: Matthew Lloyd John Coleman Albert Thurgood
Foll: Simon Madden Tim Watson Dick Reynolds (c)
Int: Mark Thompson Graham Moss Scotty Lucas Jack Clarke

Coach: Kevin Sheedy
Assistants: Neale Daniher and Mark Harvey (stiff to not make the 22)

Pretty fair forward line to be honest!!!

Hard to do a best 20 team I feel for the Doggies

We've had plenty of quality ruckman and midfielders over the years which a few will make the team, be it out of position. I think wingman and small forwards are the 2 positions we haven't had too many of over the years, we've had a heap of centreman and goalkicking rovers over the years though, so Allan Hopkins for example gets the nod over a Harry Hickey/Binger McLaren type, while from all reports Joe Ryan was an outstanding damaging rover too who missed out for a Royal/Bissett. Down back and in the ruck was the hardest to fit them all in though, Lake, Jillard and Gilbee among a few who just missed out down back, while Ware, Olliver and Wynd were ruckman I couldn't fit in.

Whelp, fair bit of recency bias, but tried to have a crack. Fair few Brownlow medallists haven't made the cut either. Recency bias with all of our 300 gamers making the team, but felt their enormous contributions to the club justified their selections, also feel this team is fairly well balanced aside from slightly too tall up forward with 2 CHFs and 2 FFs in the side.

B: Donald Henderson Morris
HB: Murphy Whitten Smith
C: Hawkins West Hopkins
HF: Johnson Grant Templeton
F: Royal Beasley Collins
R: Schultz Boyd Liberatore
Int: Dempsey Bissett

Dempsey & Wynd would be the rucks.

Doug Hawkins on one wing, clearly....Tony Liberatore would be well ahead of his son for inclusion, I'd of thought.

Hard to leave out Bob Murphy too.

Of the 1954 Premiership lot, obviously Ted Whitten Senior & Charlie Sutton are the stand-outs.

Tough choice between Templeton, Quinlan & Beasley for the key forward posts, but I'd go with Quinlan & Templeton.....Barry Hall simply not in the same category or class....Jack Collins probably also deserves a spot. Norm Ware also considered something of a legend of the club.

Bob Murphy Brian Lake Scott Wynd
Rohan Smith Ted Whitten Dale Morris
Doug Hawkins Scott West Matthew Boyd
Chris Grant Bernie Quinlan Charlie Sutton
Brad Johnson Kelvin Templeton Norm Ware

Gary Dempsey Marcus Bontempelli Tony Libertore

John Schulz Jack Collins Arthur Oliver

Much like Richmond, Footscray has a plethora of champion ruckmen from which to choose.
Gemtleman John every day of the week is my ruckman

Played against Polly and Big Nick and held his own, won 5 BnFs and a Brownlow. Probably would've played about 250 games but retired in his late 20s as football was too time consuming for his business demands at the time, so fell just short of 190.

Have him as the 5th greatest Bulldog player of all time on my personal rankings. 1. EJ, 2. Grant, 3. Dougie, 4. Johnno, 5. Schultz, 6. Westy, after Westy you can throw a blanket over a good 20-30 of them, though I'd say Dempsey and Hopkins would be 2 who would round out the top 10.

Absolutely love Charlie and everything he did for the club, ties with EJ for greatest clubman for sure, but imo he's only about a top 40-50 player on ability, his leadership was outstanding obviously though, I view him more of a coach rather player, kinda similar to John Kennedy Snr at Hawthorn imo in terms of the legacy they created at their respective clubs, though there would be a fair few better players ahead of JKS I'd expect.

Barry Hall only played 2 years with us, no where near conversation

Quinlan was a gun, but was a far more complete player/forward at Fitzroy, was used as a swingman for us and was a very good player and a huge loss when he left but Beasley has to be in the side for him, basically Beasley at Footscray = Quinlan at Fitzroy. Wally Donald and Herb Henderson were 2 other 54 premiership heroes that were key components of our miserly defence back then, them 2 and Morris would arguably be our 3 greatest lockdown defenders of all time.

Not a bad list though for a neutral, we share 14 players.

So I'll take a crack at the Best ever 20 for North Melbourne:

B: Anthony Stevens David Dench John Blakey
HB: Glenn Archer Ross Glendinning Adam Simpson
C: Keith Greig Les Foote Wayne Schimmelbusch
HF: Allen Aylett Wayne Carey John Dugdale
F: Brent Harvey Drew Petrie Jim Krakouer
R: Gary Dempsey Malcolm Blight Barry Cable

Int: Phil Krakouer Noel Teasdale
Not bad but the obvious ones to me are McKernan for Petrie and Schwass for Simpson. Don't think Stevens was ever named in the back pocket that's as good a place as any to squeeze him in.

I looked at multiple best & fairest winners, martyn won it twice and was a dominant defender for basically all of the 90s. i thought i had put cable in the side, that one's a mistake

Full Forward : Paul Chapman Doug Wade David Clarke Snr
Ruck : Polly Farmer Garry Hocking Gary Ablett Jnr

Polly and Bernie Smith I never saw play, Wade I only saw when he was at North.

Mooney might raise some eyebrows, but he was a very skilled footballer on both sides of his body. Stoneham may have had a higher peak, but it was only for a very brief period prior to breaking his leg.

Malarkey was a personal favourite but was a very fine full back. Scarlett could play however the game required, short, tall, dour or attacking.

I was born in 84 and can only remember footy from 90 onwards so this is my best 20 from who I’ve actually seen play.

B. Archer, Martyn, R.Smith
HB. King, Tarrant, Blakey
C. Higgins, Cunnington, Schwass
HF. Pickett, Carey, Grant
F. Bell, Longmire, Waite
R. McKernan, Stevens, Harvey
I. Goldstein, Simpson
Wellsy before Higgins
Goldy the ruckman and Corey replacing Longmire.
Agree with the Waite inclusion. What a footballer when he was on the park.

Daniel Bradshaw has done more than Charlie Cameron at this point. Doesn’t mean I disagree with your choice though. I just have one question since you probably saw their whole careers, Brad was the better player than Chris Scott?
They did play similar roles, so it was so hard to choose which one. I felt Brad was more dynamic, and even spent some time as a tagger and in the midfield.

Fair enough, I felt Bradshaw's last year with Brisbane as great, and was so much more dangerous with Brown than Fevola ever was. Bradshaw never made All-Australian, but Charlie Cameron has, and Cameron provides some extra speed and zip.

Martin Pike & Leppitsch out.....Roos to CHB....John Murphy on the HBF & Grant Lawrie in the back pocket.

Garry Wilson on the HFF in place of Ryan.
Such a hard job, combining three clubs' history into just one team. You can't drop Leppa though. He was a three time All-Australian, three-time premiership player and a two-time leading goal kicker.

I put Pike in for his grittiness, and his killer winning instinct. He just knew how to win, four-time premiership player.
