Was watching one of my Essendon DVDs today and thought up this thread.

For Essendon:

Best: 1940s - Three premierships (plus 1950), 7 Grand Finals (8 with a draw), Reynolds, Hutchinson, Coleman.

Worst: Probably the 1970s - Five coaches. No finals victories in three appearances, all elimination final floggings. Windy Hill brawl. Red shorts. Graham Moss wins Brownlow and then splits to WA.

The Bulldogs have made the Finals in every decade they played ten years in. It is a hard task rating the best and worst, but I'll have a crack.

BEST Either '40's or '90's

1940's

Finals - Four
Wins - 100
Draws - 2
Loses - 81
% Won - 54.64

1990

Finals - Six
Wins - 123
Draws - 4
Loses - 103
% Won - 53.48

WORST

I would probably say either 1960's or 1980's.

Since World War II...

I would have to say Geelong's best decades were the 1950's and 1960's where we won Premierships and were a big part of finals most seasons.

The worst decade was probably the 1970's. We had a pretty ordinary team of battlers during that decade. We did manage to make the finals twice in 1976 and 1978 but never really threatened in either finals campaign.

hard to split the 50,s and late 80,s to mid 90,s as the worst in the clubs history.

cheers!

Make that the early 80's to present. 20 years of gross underperformance.

Without the Hafey and immediate post Hafey era (call it 17 years, ) , Richmond's history looks pretty sad.

lmao this coming from a suppporter who,s club one how many flags in the past 50+yrs?.
now thats what i call underperforming of the highest order considering how many times the pies have made it thru the the big one.

cheers!

Melbourne would be the 1950's (including 1960, please). Five premierships in six years is a period of dominance unrivalled in the history of the AFL/VFL.

Collingwood can claim six flags from ten years, but that's obviously an inferior strike rate :)

If we're allowed to take ten years from any period, I'll have eleven!

1954 to 1964 -- six premierships from eight grand finals; seven consecutive GFs (1954-1960); finals every year; five premierships from six years (1955, 56, 57, 59, 60).

Those were the days :)

1970s were the worst -- seven double figure finishes, highest placing of sixth.

For Fitzroy, it was the sixties. Saw every game in 1963 and 1964, during which period we won one match. The distinct disadvantage of not playing games interstate in those days.

Didn't make the finals at all in the decade. Mostly finished in the last four.

The nineties were not much better, saved by the inevitable.

It was an inspired decision by the Fitzroy board to dispense with the services of Len Smith after 1961 season. He'd only coached the team to 4th, 5th, 3rd and 5th in the prior four seasons. I know for a fact that this committee was convinced that what they were doing was in the best interests of Fitzroy. Thanks, but don't help. The beginning of the end.

Brisbane have had a bad nine or ten years, but it probably overlaps the specified decade thingy.

Fitzroy's best decade was probably in the tens of the previous century. We are in the middle of Brisbane's best decade.

Definately the 1930's for North.

1900-1920 we were one of the best sides in Victoria - we won 49 games straight at one stage.

Post WW2 we had a great young side in 49 and 50.

60's we won a couple of night flags, but that was a pretty dimal era as well.

70's we were fantastic, 80's erratic but very good at times, 90's obviously one of our best eras.

For Geelong, it should've been the 90's, but alas, it wasn't.

So the best decade would have to be either the 30's or 50's when we two premierships in each. Unless you want to count the old VFA days. In the 1880's we rocked, chalking up 5 premierships and two runners-ups!

The worst was probably the 40's when Geelong couldn't field a team for a couple of years and then were crud

Best: the 50s. The lowest finish we came was third. We won 7 premierships in the 50s...including 6 in a row. We also came second once. The start of the Fos Williams era. He started captain coaching in 1950.

Worst: 40s. Only the one premiership, and twice outside of the finals. 4 lost grand finals in a row.

For hawthorn the best is not a contest.

For the worst it could be any pre 1950. 1950's was quite poor but that was whren they got cracking and decided to be more than just easibeats.

Disinterest has been a curse - apparently when they got in the VFA it was because the council wanted it - the club couldn't give rats. I think the supporters were bitter bacause of a rise in admission charges.

Collingwood - best 1920's
Worst - 1980s - though we still played in two GF's in that time. Wes Fellowes won a Copeland so that shows how bad we were.
