1987 - Missed finishing minor premier for a week off because Stephen Kernahan kicked a match-winning goal after the siren against Norf in Round 22. No Dunstall in the PF and GF and the temperature was 304 K on GF day.

We've only been in one, so it should be a short post, but off the top of my head here is an inexhaustive list from our board over the years

We had the flu
The wind shifted at 3 quarter time
Ballantyne had the wrong boots on
We weren't allowed to warm up on the ground when we wanted to
Umpires
Adam McPhee retired one year too soon
Garrick Ibbotson was injured
Lachie Neale was sub instead of being on the ground
Nick Suban was on the ground instead of being sub
Zac Clarke was on the ground instead of being at home
We had to wear white
Brian Lake was a meany
Umpires again

My team has turned this into an art form, but I'm trying to keep these out of la la land:

1989: (true) Geelong had as many serious injuries (including more surgeries) as Hawthorn that day.

92,94,95 ... nah, we copped our whack there.

2008: we'd been running out of gas and Hawks played against the spirit of the game to win it.

2020: not a real Grand Final, just an exhibition tournament.

2024: fricking injuries, court cases, you name it. Plus ours is the only finals system which allows one team a do-over and not the other. (Carlton '86 and '93, WCE '91, '05 & '06 ... but kudos to WCE in '18).
According to Cam Mooney on the weekend plenty of geelong people on the inside believe Bruhn would have changed geelongs fortunes last year.

Seen a lot of Pies losses, each has its narrative. The common theme is a tremendously spirited team with mid table talent getting further than people believed we could.

2002 and 2018 are the two I am proud of, not within a bulls road of either but we gave them a real scare.

1990 was a cruel match, we bashed Essendon and when they hit back we started a brawl. Possibly the last of the brutal Grand Finals, and not as brutal as 89.

Ryan Reynolds Wtf GIF

What is this grand final you speak of?
Soon brother.

It's only fair to note Preliminary Final losses too, especially when you can argue if the side won they would have won the Grand Final.

2013 - missing Enright and Chapman plus Hawthorn were the beneficiaries of a week's rest.
2016 - lacking match fitness due to playing one game of footy in a month, while Sydney were match fit and it allowed them to get the jump on us.
2017 - fair play to Adelaide they were far too good for us at Adelaide Oval, we copped our whack here and the team simply wasn't good enough.
2019 - missing Hawkins, Rohan and Duncan which meant we had a complete lack of structure and system moving the ball into the forward 50.
2021 - half the team were sick with a virus, it was so bad we asked if the AFL could postpone the match.
2024 - Holmes was BOG until he pinged his hamstring and it arguably changed the course of the match, as we were beating Brisbane comfortably right up until Holmes got injured.
Cause he punched Schofield in the face 100m off the ball, and somehow only got a week. And Geelong appealed!!

2007, PED's
Might as well blame the umpires for that 2007 grand final loss by 119 points LoL.

But in all seriousness.... Go look at ports 2004 grand final side and look at the 2007 side.

In 2004 there was Josh Carr, Byron Pickett, Gavin Wanganeen, Jarrod Schofield and Damien Hardwick. None of those blokes were there in 2007

1998 goal kicking cost us a 70 point win. Absolutely monstered them in the first half
Yes I agree with that also 1994 Preliminary Final poor kicking for goal in the last quarter and shocking umpiring 32 to 12 in favour of Geelong cost us that game.
Not saying we would have beaten the Eagles in the Grand Final but it would have been a classic as the Eagles feared us more then Geelong.

Haven't seen a loss but closest example of the one that got away was the 2018 PF loss.

Dusty appeared to be on one leg with a corky and there was rumours of a gastro bug through some players in the week.

And then we got Mason Cox'd.

Explain 1 month prior on their dung hill where no one wins.

He's absolutely dreaming. He actually did play in the 2024 Qualifying and Preliminary finals. If anyone bothered to go back and check (very doubtful for fans, impossible for the footy media), he was for a long time one of the regular whipping boys on the Geelong board, would he make it, needs to do more etc. etc. Not entirely unjustified either.

The reality is his form - and output - this season is by far the best he's ever shown for us. Just seems Mooney is like others and has to reach for excuses instead of acknowledging Brisbane (who also had far more than one player missing) were way too good.

2023: injuries, umpire calling playon with a ZB kick over his head, pies icing games by being allowed to tackle each other.
That last one was a brilliant tactic. The other element was handballing straight down in a pack.

Tactically Fly destroyed Fagan that day, the jobs on Neale and the rest of the midfield were 🤌. Just 6 off the best goals youll see from small forwards (2xGotY) and a great game from Joey made it seem close.

2000 - If David Neitz had kicked a goal from the first shot of the game rather then a behind, I firmly believe that the momentum generated would have carried us all the way to a 55 point defeat.
