People are always plagiarising Hawthorn phraseology

"That was an unhawthornlike performance"
  • Allan Joyce's memorable description of an out-of-character poor performance back in 1992-93 when the cracks first started to appear in the Hawthorn dynasty
  • It's been re-appropriated by many coaches and media pundits since then: unrichmondlike, uncarltonlike, unessendonlike, unbulldogslike

"We weren't tough enough for long enough"
  • Alastair Clarkson after the Hawks were overrun by Collingwood in the last quarter of the 2011 Preliminary Final
  • Adam Simpson after the Eagles were overrun in the second half by Essendon last Saturday night

"When you lose a soldier, you replace him with another soldier and move on."
  • Alastair Clarkson after losing Jarryd Roughead for the season in 2011 (and said again many times since then)
  • Damien Hardwick after losing Alex Rance for the season in 2019.

"We had 100 tackles tonight and only got ONE free kick for holding the ball... WTF!!!"
  • Alastair Clarkson after the Hawks were knocked out of the 2016 finals by the Bulldogs (and again, after the Hawks beat North last year)
  • Brett Ratten after the Saints were beaten by Geelong a few weeks ago
When Clarko said this last year, he was roundly condemned by Kane Cornes & others in the media. He was labelled as a "whinger" (after we won) and he was accused of trying to influence the AFL & umpires to obtain an unfair advantage. But when Ratten said the exact same thing earlier this year, he was applauded by Kane Cornes for speaking out against the umpires reluctance to reward good tackles & to penalise incorrect disposal ... :confusedv1:

That is more than six words.
