Well I feel a bit like the guy who's arrived at the party after all the grog's been drunk.

Ah, well. For what it's worth, here's mine:

ESSENDON - who can top that list? They'll be up there for at least 5 more years.
BRISBANE - Enough talent & the 11 Gabba games will see them through. Could go as low at 8th though. Just a hunch.
MELBOURNE - Showed their class this year, and no real losses of talent.
ST KILDA - recruiting coups of the century. The core of this side were in a GF only 3 years ago. Look out.
CARLTON - Getting older & key injuries exposing a not-as-deep-as-we-thought list.
GEELONG - Showed real promise in 2000. Needs a bit more consistency.
ORANGEROOS - On the way down, Rooboy. Losses of Bell & Capuano will hurt.
HAWTHORN - Good, but overachieved in 2000.

-----

WOODEN SPOON - to be fought out in the city of Churches. Take your pick. Both are a rabble at the moment.

-----

On my homefront (Eddie's Angels - Mick's Mauraders), I think Bloodstained Angel is pretty much right. ARound 11-12 will be a good result, with probably 10 wins. There is a bad lack of experience at the moment, only compensated for by the "boys-own" mentality that comes from players all going through an experience together (i.e. youthful exuberance in more abundance than experience & skill).

As for Hawthorn - top 2 within 2 years??? In which universe? They're far too inconsistent at present, and overachieved in 2000. They'll be fringe finalists again 2001, and maybe top 4 by 2003. Loss of Salmon will ensure no great progress in 2001.

-----

That's it. Bring on the mudslingers.

You go away for a few days and there are over 1000 messages posted, looks like I have to catch up.

Anyway, here goes:

After reading most of the posts, I thought I'd make a few observations.

S.Robbo - Geelong 7th, will improve on this year. NEWSFLASH, they finished 7th this year! and also, the Dockers will be very tough next season and I would expect them to make the bottom part of the 8.

My Selections are:

Essendon - will certainly be playing come Preliminary final day, but upsets do happen as we all know, but I would expect them to go back to back, but not as easily as this year.
Geelong - This is not because I support them. I believe that Geelong has the best young side in the competition, even better than Hawthorn, they have recruited experience to top up the young and talented side, are well coached and after making the finals this year, will be hungry for more success. - Joel Corey to win the rising star!
Hawthorn - Lot of potential, don't have a strong backline and a lot of pressure will be put on Rehn. Should be high up at the end of the season, but could just as easily finish 12th. I reckon they're good enough though.
Richmond - Will be very very good, especially if they have a half decent run with injuries.
Melbourne - I'd expect a slight let-down, but nothing like last year. Probably need another tall forward - Brad Green to be the next superstar of the game.
Brisbane - Certainly good enough to make the 8, and could possibly challenge for the flag, but I reckon their inconsistency will kill them in the end, like this year.
Port Adelaide - A major surprise here, I remember in 1989 when a certain side called West Coast had a shocker after making the finals in their second year. I also remember what happened in 1990. If Peter Sumich had have kicked that goal, Collingwood would still have a longer Premiership Drought than Geelong!!! Port will be the big improver next season (along with StKilda), and I reckon they will win a flag in the next 5 years. BIG CALL
Fremantle - The Brisbane of 1995 for 2001.

Outside - StKilda, Bulldogs, North, Carlton, Sydney (I just don't rate them) Collingwood, Adelaide, West Coast.

Pess, how do 4th and 3rd count as "very poor seasons"? And if you want to talk about injuries, don't mention '97

The top eight, in any order,

ESSENDON
CARLTON
HAWTHORN
MELBOURNE
BRISBANE
FREMANTLE
GEELONG
SYDNEY

North Melbourne have had their time and they will be on the way out in 2001. I reckon the Hawks will be the next danger club, and Essendon (hopefully) will not match this years performance.

Go Blues

Ok ok the top eight will look like this in the year 2001
smile.gif
I don't think St kilda or collingwood will make the eight
rolleyes.gif
and i think it will look like this
biggrin.gif

1. Essendon again
2. Melbourne again
cool.gif

3. Brisbane Lions
4. Hawthorn
5. North Melbourne
6. Carlton
7. Richmond
8. Geelong

Essendon won't be beaten for a while and Melbourne was the second best team by far in the competition. With Essendon the best by far. North are slowly going down the ladder but will stay around 5th. Carlton will go down due to all the salary cap problems. Richmond showed glimpses of hope and i think it will be their year to be in the 8 and geelong and Hawthorn have promising young lists.

Here's another simple question:

Which team out of The Eagles and North Melbourne, sorry Kangaroos, Or is that Sydney Roos or Canberra Roos will still be alive in 2 years time?

Eagles well over 30,000 members basically every game was a sell out for us this year, Kangaroos had trouble getting anyone into watch them this year (Thinking of the Freo match in particular)

Which team is able to keep their players? Lets see, Kangaroos have lost Bell 'their future captain', LOL - he saw a much brighter future at Freo and good luck to him

Abraham is next, that guy who always gets drunk at functions has gone, Leigh Colbert made such a huge impact this year too.

Sorry dave, I did mean 3-4 poor years with injuries - You have struggled to get your best team on the field - regardless of results I wouls say your 'lost' man-games would be above average for the years 96-99

I'm saying there may be a worse year - and lack of injuries has been a key. Perhaps that means you'll finish the minor round with 3-6 losses but still be on top.

Go cats go. I'm quite aware you finished 7th, but I've got no doubt you were merely making up numbers. Technically you finished 8th....after finals results, or haven't you heard of them?

Any genuine finals side don't drop games to the two worst sides of the year...Port and St Kilda. My observation of Geelong was justified when the hawks disposed of them...a result which was always going to happen.

So now that we've established that you finished 8th, let's realise that other teams may just infact improve a little more than Geelong next year, which is why I think they'll finish 9th. Richmond were much more consistent over the year and were only killed by injuries. Richo and D.Kellaway are quality players and will only strengthen them next year. Their also well guided by Frawley. Think St Kilda will leapfrog you as well with their recruiting binge.

I recognise Geelong got White and Murphy (who I think is over-rated), but they still lack a couple of quality players in key positions. Mcgrath's a hack and Mooney up forward is hardly a player you can rely on for consistency.

Just reckon Geelong lack that zest that other teams above them have.

And please explain to me how you think Geelong has a better younger brigade than Hawthorn? Croad, Thompson and Hay sure take some beating in that department.

Open your eyes pal...Geelong have alot of work in front of them.

Can I also point out that 2000 finishing position can only mean so much. Apart form Essendon, Carlton and poor St Kilda any other team could have finished anywhere last year. Look at Melbourne, North. They finished second and third and were 2 wins ahead of Doggies and Hawthorn. Yet the first two had Essendon, Carlton only once and St Kilda twice. The reverse applied to Hawthorn and the Doggies. Any team from 3-8 could have finished anywhere ands all gave each other some beatings along the way. Similarly the teams from 9-12 could have easily been in the final 8. Richmond spent the year in the eight only to drop out in the end. Even Collingwood at 15th started the year with huge wins over finalists. Expect essendon to tend towards top (or top 4 if they have a 'hangover' year but expect the others to be anywhere

If you had to predict a POSSIBLE potential spooner look to sides with signs of discord (as in St Kilda) Carlton, Adelaide, West coast are possible candidates but probably have the talent to string a few wins together even in a bad year. If everthing went rightany any of them could be top four side. It's that even.

S.Robbo.

Geelong didn't lose to Port Adelaide. It was a draw in miserable conditions at Football Park.

If memory serves me right Port knocked off Carlton, Richmond, Bulldogs, Eagles in Perth, ran North to 17 points and Essendon to 31 points all in the second half of the season.

As it turned out, the StKilda game didn't make any difference to where we finished on the ladder as it was. So lets move on.

I'm not disputing the fact that Geelong were ordinary last season, in fact they were very ordinary. BUT, they were still good enough to finish the H&A in 5th spot, only 4 teams got more points out of the season than Geelong for the whole of 2000.

They introduced 8 first year players last season and those kids can only get better.

I agree with you that they lack top quality in specialist positions, but the goal to goal line is still pretty good.

The only problem I can see with Geelong is that the kids may get the second year blues and the older player may have to fill the void.

Hmmmm its sooooo early, but here we go in no particular order.

Essendon
Melbourne
Carlton
Hawks
Lions
Geelong
Swans

Throw a blanket for 8 could be the crows st kilda, nth, rich, Freo or even the wce there not as bad as everyone thinks.

But really its way too early for this sort of stuff.

You're kidding

If anybody seriously thinks StKilda, West Coast or Freo will make the 8 they nead their head read.

- West Coast have 1 or 2 good players, but the rest of their list is awful

- Freo are just awful, period

- StKilda could have Carey, Voss and Lloyd and they would still finish outside the 8, because asw a club they are weak and spineless
