AC/DC. Sure they're okay to nod your head to when they come on the radio and I don't mind hearing the start of Hells Bells when they play it at the MCG before the game but I can't say I'd ever buy an album or download their music.

It's impossible not to respect AC/DC even if not your type of music. They are the masters of the rock genre. So brilliant in their simplicity and raw power.

Not to mention the greatest live rock show that there has ever been.

Totally. I've not really enjoyed anything since about the halfway mark of the Back In Black record, but still have to totally respect their achievements. And they know how to play to their audience.

As far as Australian acts that others often gush over, I've never had any time for Ross Wilson (or Daddy Cool/Mondo Rock), Stephen Cummings (or Sports), Paul Kelly, Something For Kate, Iva Davies (or Icehouse) or Smith Street Band.

Wouldn't go across the road to see any of them.

Paul Kelly is a national icon. Brilliant songwriter.

Ross Wilson has some great tracks too.

The Smith Street Band are a good shout. I should like them on paper, but can’t get over Wil’s OTT earnest vocal delivery and lyrical content. Gang of Youths are in a similar vein. Given them a decent trial but can’t get over the forced singing and cringey one liners. Major Matt Berninger wannabe.

Same reason half of Car Seat Headrest’s discography is off putting. Really pedantic subject matter delivered with complete conviction - really rubs me the wrong way; which is a shame because they’re also capable of some exceptional songwriting.

La Dispute can sometimes lean into it a bit, but they also write about stuff that does lend itself to some over the top lyrics - school shootings, murders, suicidal etc.

Paul Kelly is truly awful.
Really, each to their own but Paul Kelly is a legend in my mind..!

How many Aussie artists have been included in high school English Literature? He is such a formidable storyteller that his lyrics read like poetry and as David Fricke from Rolling Stone once said; 'he is as good a lyricist as anyone anywhere..!'

If this track is not in the top 10 ten all time Aussie classic ballads, seriously I don't know what should be..?

Totally agree on the Smith Street Band and totally disagree on Gang of Youths. Mostly disagree on Car Seat Headrest... some of the content matter is inconsequential but I find him less earnest and often playful with his lyrics.

Well some really ignorant people have gone all out making statements like Bob Dylan is overrated, only to later realize how much of a story teller he is, and how deep his songs go. I think this is the case with Paul Kelly. He's not there to provide 100% clean vocals, beautiful ambience/samples. His music will never be electric. That's not what he's about. He takes music to a deeper level.

I have no problem with the storytelling aspect of Dylan (or indeed Kelly). It's just that I'd prefer hearing someone else singing these wonderful songs. Dylan's vocals are just too dirgey for my palate.

You get Sarah Blasko to sing Dylan and she'll take away everything that makes Dylan so special
Same as Bowie. Covers generally suck.

Hendrix "All Along The Watchtower", Lions "Girl From the North Country" and RATM "Maggie's Farm" are all exceptional Dylan covers, and far superior to the original versions. There's plenty more.
