After declaring Steele to be our first pick on the eve of the draft last year, i hit up my source again.

He said that its a bit early to tell and that they are not giving up much this year.

This leads me to believe they have spotted something of worth that could be around late enough for us to pick him up. Maybe even ball who knows.

Thoughts?

I think your source is honest enough to tell you when they're coming up dry.

In the absence of information it sounds like you want to speculate. That's hardly scientific (boring I know :() and without more to corroborate theory it will be just be speculation.

Wait on em to see if you get more info later... perhaps find peripheral details, the mood of certain people, when flights are booked to certain places etc... This will not get you an answer but when concrete information comes along you will be in a position to make firm deductions.

On the plus side I have some tea leaves here you might be interested in having a look at? ;)

you can't hide players these days every club would basically know every player.

Rusling? There are still some gems picked up late in the draft.

look at the 2002 2003 drafts. the rookie listed players turned out better than the players drafted in the national draft.

to be fair we are still a good month off. I will hit him up closer to the date.

My hope is that we are hiding a Jimmy james hird somewhere in the draft

Yeah at Pick 30 they would not be sure who will be there at Pick 30.

Ask them a week before the Draft he might have more of an idea

Late? Rusling was taken in the mid 20s wasn't he?

I doubt he was hidden away, I think it was just that no teams wanted to take him earlier than we did.

Think he played Mostly School footy and only played 1 SANFL game

late, considering how highly rated he is (that is my perception)

hidden, because he only played school boy footy from memory.

In any case i think there is alot to be read from the pies hierarchy being more secretive than usual. Maybe im juts bored and reading to much into it.

IIRC the media were speculating about Collingwood's interest in Rusling several weeks before the draft

Also he didnt compete at draft camp as he was apparently asked not to by the pies... he was 'injured' and unable to compete.

So they failed to keep him a Secret

has Anything change since then?

Didn't he play one game in the SANFL to qualify for the draft or something
I think he played one SANFL reserves game to qualify and kicked a bag of 10 or thereabouts iirc.

Rusling was asked to play school footy but play enough games at West Adelaide so he could nominate for the draft and was told to not go to the draft camp.

Same thing happened with Brendan Lade when Port came in. Hid him in the SANFL reserves all year prior to them coming into the AFL.

My interpretation of that is that they have no idea at this stage. They're probably still putting together a list of players that they'd like and hoping that they get to choose a name that is pretty high on that list.

I think they know by now that many supporters will blab all over the net, so they probably don't tell *anyone* anything they want to keep secret from other clubs.

Well put DTM. Rusling went at 23 or 28, maybe the latter number. You could hardly say that his performance to date warrants better than a mid-20's pick! Hidden away or not, we can't yet say we got him cheaply.

And don't forget the guy goes missing if he can't mark the ball. It's easy to get carried away about someone when they are missing in action so much of the time. The combination of memories and dreams can be lethal to our better judgement.

In his comeback games in the backline last year, he never gave me the impression that he was going to threaten N Brown or Reid as a KPB.

Who seriously believes that Rusling is going to get through a pre-season without some serious injury crippling him again? When I make up best 22's to amuse myself, I don't even remember he's available, let alone give him positions assigned to Anthony or Dawes.

You may want to start familiarising yourself with Rus again and ditch the amusement.

:p

Thats dodgy as. The tricks of the trade. If theres a rule there that can be exposed and work to your advantage, then why not? Its probably been going on for years, these are probably some of the more documented ones.

There's a lot of Rusling conspiracies here, but the fact was he chose to play school footy and clock year 12 over taking the more traditional AFL entry means available to SA boys.

We weren't the only ones who knew about him. Essendon would have taken him with their second pick.
