Im a hack, so take my words for what they are, but I went a long period without playing a driver and doing the long iron/hybrid thing off the tee.

For the shorter courses in Perth it worked relatively well, but for longer courses I still wanted to be reaching in two which was impossible when playing a 3H off the tee. As such, I was going for to much, trying to hit too hard etc... which put me in more problems later on.

However, if better players are playing a 300m par three then obviously playing something shorter to leave yourself a nine iron in is far better then smashing it in playing with an weird half pitch etc...

One weird side effect was that once I came back to using a driver was that I without any other coaching or thought process somewhat modified my swing with a driver to be flatter and straighter which certainly helped in the long term even if I was giving away 20m off the tee.

thats a long par 3.........;)

Played my last couple of rounds with low handicap golfers, 2, 3 & 5.

They approach the game completely differently to what i did.

they purely look at a hole and decide where they want to hit there next shot from, most par 4's they take 3 woods and hybrids or irons to a position on the fairway so they have a full short iron to the green. Anywhere between 85 -140 seemed to be there desired range

well i tried it and who knew but thinking around a golf course rather than trying to rip it 280 meters every time off the tee actually works, and its a lot less stressful.

Anyone else ever tried playing a round and removing the driver from their bag?

I'm by no means a good golfer but that's how I approach a round. I also probably err on the side of caution with my shot/decision-making. I think that once you get that consistency and cement your course management techniques/approaches then you can add an aggressiveness.

There's a lot of good golf video's on course management. I like Mark Crossfield's video's because they're entertaining, informative and his videos which show him and his mates playing a round give you an idea of what's going through a pro's mind.

I did this too when I was a junior. Looking back its the worst decision I've made in golf. I went from being a bit shaky with a driver to having absolutely no confidence to hit one.

guaranteed your next round will be 45-48 - congrats!

I'm getting a lesson next week for my irons. Because I was working full time when I got the clubs (4 weeks ago) I had to go to a driving range complex after work at night to get my fix. I reckon hitting off the grass mats messed up my iron play seeing as though I hadn't touched a club for so many years.

At the moment I'm hitting so far behind the ball and under the ball.

My drives more or less have given me the chance to hit on in regulation but my approach shots have failed me on everyone hole (quite literally).

Played the back 9 today shot 49.

Had a group of 4 Asian teens in front of me. All had range finders and all would range find every shot that was not on the green. They were quite literally range finding shots that were 10m off the green...AND they wouldn't call me up so that I could play through. Sigh.

you should report them to the clubhouse.

Has anyone seen the new handicap system about to come into all clubs?

thoughts?

I personally like it - however some of the course rankings are a little bit off IMO

it will take time to iron out the kinks if any. i compared my course to say cape schank and thought wtf how is the schank graded higher than mine? oh well

and Eagle Ridge, was god smacked Eagle Ridge was harder than, Moonah, The Dunes or St Andrews or 13th Beach

Played the front this arvo shot 52 - went full ****** in a bunker on a par three. Was not pretty.
Bunkers are easy, practice and swing damm hard, it'll give you confidence

I'm normally alright with bunkers. There's just the odd time I'll lose the plot.

Probably made worse by the fact that the course was busy and I was playing with an older gentleman who plays off 9.

an enjoyable round in usual windy conditions on the old course @ national. walked the course with bag on shoulder getting a work out inadvertently.

course in great nick, greens were beautiful if a little slow.

signature par 3 7th overlooking the sea (i think bass straight) was calming yet worrysome.

thing about the old is that its not overly long. just tight with tee trees on the fairway sides. once you're in, you're like kobes girl in colorado.

driving wise i get a pass. hit a bad patch during the middle of the round, especially on one par 4 when i hit 2 balls 45 degrees left. then lost tempo with every club. worked my way back in and got rhythm again.

29 pts, best round on the toughest course IMO at the club.

hello everyone.

ocean course today. perhaps hit 7/10 fairways. interesting. warm up at the range was great. nice and relaxed.

first few holes also ok. then got tense and tight.

as the game progressed shanks and slices and hooks became more frequent. thankfully putting was ok....when i got there.

warm, humid and windy. yuk
