hitting balls. a bucket full. start with wedges and move up gradually to the driver. then hit the putting green. unfortuantly hitting off mats at the range

I can't do the full bucket before playing. I usually just hit 20-30 trying my best to simulate match play (so not just aimlessly hitting balls). Luckily my course has a grass section on the driving range otherwise I wouldn't even bother.

ours does too. but with so much traffic this and next month we have to hit off mats during teh week.

because i had not played consistently for some time i needed to feel ball on head/shaft.

we also have first class putting greens and chipping areas. so taking balls there is also fun.

what handicap re you playing off?

also a good warm up routine my local pro advised me of,

swing with two irons - say a 4 & 5 iron together and swing both right and left handed (it works well)

Yeah that's really handy. I always get out to the putting green before playing. Usually only go to the chipping area when I'm practicing more so than playing a round or playing in a comp.

Only started playing 6 weeks ago after a long lay off from golf. Am currently waiting for the club to send me my golf link card etc. But it'll be ~20-25 so nothing flash.

The best thing is that the course has a par 3 as well. So its great for warming up.

i find putting really relaxing and gives you an idea about feel. ditto chipping.

you play at 3 bloody hard courses though when slope comes in & you play other course you'll find your off less. Can non members get on the courses at all?

true my friend.

yes guests can play. on any given day it is set as such:

course 1 - members only
course 2 - guests all day
course 3 - members morning/guests allowed after 12 ish.

it gets rotated every day.

but for guests to play you must have a member in the group, i believe.

What're the ratings for your course off the mens?

good morning, about to leave for another round today. taking many round white dimpled objects just in case.

slope ratings (blue tees)
moonah 131
ocean 124
old 130

I miss playing golf so much. Simply unaffordable where I am. Though I did find a set of clubs in a bin at a market, they are circa 1975 clubs. HAvent hit with them yet, and they are a bit too small for me.

I just cant afford green fees around me. Going price is about 120 AUD for 18. Strange thing is everytime I drive past a course they are completely empty.

No wonder France doesnt produce championship golfers.

I just played the one course (primarily) which I'm a member of and its got a 130 rating so very similar.

if you were to compare moonah and ocean would you say there is a noticeable gap in difficulty?

i know plenty of members from all parts of melb including inner city. surprisingly it only takes them just over an hour tops to get to the club.

glad to hear you enjoyed racv. it looks over the old course. some accommodation is located overlooking a few of the holes also.

all courses are bloody hard. i have many friends who are better golfers but struggle with the speed of the greens, undulations, WIND, beauty of the course, and spectacularly soft fairways with excellent drainage. today was perfect on the old, no wind (well a light breeze), and sunshine.

moonah is the highest ranked in terms of top 100 australian courses of the club. it is long....LONG!! norman designed course if that helps you get a picture of it. otherwise youtube the National gold club moonah fly over. some trees and enough shrubbery to get you in trouble. no carts permitted on the course unless you are OLD or have a medical condition. you can leave the ball short on approach, but never long as that's where trouble lies.

ocean is a linksy style one designed by thompson. pots in middle of fairways designed to trap you (ITS A TRAP!!). dont be short otherwise the ball can arrive back at your feet courtesy of crowned greens. greens are the trickiest on this course, due to crowning and wind. this kills my friends. i just lol at them. wide fairways, and on one hole you can be on another fairway and still have a second shot. if you find your ball in the rough off the tee you will more likely than not have a 2nd shot.

ocean is unfairly maligned, and is considered most boring by people i have taken to the club.

so in conclusion, moonah is long but for some reason easier to score on. ocean is affected by winds and the greens are slickest.

the old is difficult in that if you are off the fairway, you're in the thick tee trees. you are fked. lost 3 balls in the first 2 holes today off the tee. wipe wipe tyvm. but the old is a shorter course in distance, but very hilly. you got a level lie? congratulations as its few and fair between. currently greens are slow especially on the 9 holes where greens were redone. takes a bit of getting used to. despite this the greens are true and not shitty bumpy like many courses.

snakes are slithering around atm. seen foxes also patrol the course looking for sustenance.

golf is a gentlemans game. quite often i will barrack for my playing partners, and cheer great shots or ride their putts home.

various times yesterday i have chipped my ball within 7 metres of the cup. next up, mate puts his 10, 9, 8, 7.....5m to the cup. as the ball rolls gently past my ball and towards the hole i scream "get inside me!!"

oops

Played on the St Johns Course at the Heritage in Yarra Valley on Sunday. Didn't score as was playing with my wife and was just happy to play on a course the pros play on. That course broke me. Lost soooo many balls, just couldnt hit straight as it was frustrating the shit out of me. Awesome course though.

re: v-necks coming into sports.

let's hope that the collar remains in golf.

wholeheartedly agree. collar exhumes class. v necks have the tendency to make faces look longer.

not a fan of t shirts or skivs.

Played Sanctuary Lakes before Xmas. Bloody hell!! tough course. Wind picked up a bit as well around the 15th hole, as if I wasn't having enough trouble.

There's one par 5, can't remember the hole number in which you can either tee off straight and safe or try and fade over an inlet of water, a crunched a fade and made it over, still not sure how, was pretty chuffed as I walked up to the lie only to look further down the fairway muttering how ****ing long is this, where is the Pin? across the bay??

Nice course but a bit advanced for me.
