Canberra (Essendon)
Following on from a series of "reminiscing" posts, I was just wondering what you would consider to be your worst day at the football?

It can be for any reason; a bad loss, poor weather, the behaviour of opposition supporters etc etc.

Mine would be:

1) 1999 Prelim. Final: no explanation required.

2) Rd 19 1990 v Collingwood: Not because of the game, it was a fantastic contest, but the weather was dreadful.Typical Waverly!! It rained for most of the 2nd half and the wind blew a gale, it was freeezing!! Not too mention the state of the carpark afterwards...

What about you??

My worst would be Round 1 this year. It was at the MCG when Richmond were playing. I was BUSTING to go to the loo but the ones closest to me were....yep...CLOSED!!! It was a nightmare. I didn't want to go to far as I didn't want to miss the match.

Another time a few years ago. I think the Tigers played Carlton at the MCG. There was this 70 or something year old man. Anyway, I was very intrigued with the match. The crowd seemed to have shut up for a few seconds. All of a sudden I heard a <POP>. I turned around and the old man's face went red!! He had farted and boy was the stench bad......

ummm - one of the worst was cause of the aftermarth I think.

Bris v Essendon at the Gabba this year. Wasn't because we lost. We played like crap, and they were soooo good that we looked even worse than we were. Wasn't even that tropical rain that didn't let up for the whole night.

I was the idiot that forgot my chequebook was in my handbag, it got drenched, fell to pieces and I got introuble from my real estate cause the cheque I gave them 2 days later fell apart and the bank wouldn't take it!

So between buying the raincoats, all the hot stuff at the game to try and keep warm, the ruined shoes, the 3 days off work sick with a cold and the cost of a replacement chequebook and arguing with the agents - it cost me over $300 to go to a footy game in the rain!

1. Gf day 84

2. Gf day 87

3. Gf day 85

84 is first as they threw it away. 87 is second as to lose to the blue scum plus missing Dunstall and Brereton injured but still being picked only for Rhys-thug to take the NormSmith. 85 only rates as we lost a Gf. Never really expected to win that one, but hopes were always there if you can make won, why not hope you can win one!

Honarable mentions to 82 prelim against the Blues and the elimantion loss to Melb in 90.

The WC loss in 92 was daylight robbery which i half expected going in so that wasnt quite the same as outright crushing depression.

You'll like this one sainter

Sydney v St Kilda 1998 ScG round 12 (i think)

Sydney had had a pretty season up to that date, we were running 2nd or 3rd, playing with real power and authority and ominously gaining momentum heading into the 2nd half of the season.

It was another typically still and mild Sydney winters evening and a big crowd of 37,000 had packed into the SCG.

We started OK but trailed the saints by about 4 goals at quarter time. Then everything unravelled in a most dramtaic fashion. the Saints just kicked goal after goal after goal after that, we couldn't even get near the thing for the 2nd and 3rd quarter. By three quarter time the margin was 120 points and we had managed only 3 goals by that stage.

Sziller (6 goals) cut us to pieces and Everitt had so much of the ball he started taunting us by twirling the ball on his fingertip a-la Harlem Globetrotter style.

The worst thing about was that the crowd walked out en masse after 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter.

We eventually went down by 101 points and I would suggest the psychological scars left from that debacle still haven't really healed properly. It stopped us in our tracks and we went from being a genuine contender to a pretender in the blink of an eye.

At least No. 12 was close!

Fitzroy vs North in about 1992-3. (can't remember which year..it was so miserable I TRY to forget!) It was a very wet, cold day with about 8,000 people at Optus Oval. The two sides slogged it out through the mud and rain, no skills, just lots of wrestling matches and ball-ups. It was difficult to see who was who once the players got muddy and if the play was on the other side of the ground, it was difficult to see what was going on at all! Two goals were kicked in the first half and Fitzroy kicked about four-five for the day and lost. It remains the only Fitzroy/Brisbane Lions match that I have ever left before the final siren.

Worst day at the Football? Hmmmm

There are a few thatb spring to mind.

1. 1995 Grand Final against Carlton, we actually thought we had a chance!

2. 1994 Grand Final against West Coast, we were never in it.

(Now here's some from left field)

1990 - Rnd 1 - Vs Hawthorn - After the 1989 Grand Final, more than anything we wanted revenge - Instead we got a 120 point hammering.

1991 - Preliminary Final - Vs West Coast - Waverley in the rain, hail, wind, sleet and snow - and we were sitting in the 4th row from the front (My aunty under cover was whinging because it was too cold - I'd much rather have been ONLY cold) AND WE LOST.

1997 - Round 3 - V Port Power - I was in the crowd that day when the power got their first win in the AFL - I was not impressed.

1997 - Round 18 - Vs Sydney - Plugger had a field day and we were down by 90 points mid way through the third quarter - We only had 2 goals to half time. Amazingly we were only 7 goals down at 3qtr time and eventually lost the game be a little over 5 goals

1999 - 2nd last round v Hawthorn - We led all night and then Aaron Lord kicked the goal that was the difference between us making the finals and not

i'd have to say the worst day well should i say night at the footy would have to be round 17 this year at the waca against port when it bucketed down 2 times before the game so i was drenched then it bucketed down 2 times each quater and so there was a swimming pool on the ground before half time and we still won and pavo got the norwich rising star nominee

Thanks BA, I am glad you reminded me of that great match in Sydney. I was in a state of shock as the game was unfolding. When a guy likes Steven Sziller kicks a bag of goals, you know you are in trouble.

Sadly, we have suffered much more than our fair share of shattering defeats.

None have hurt me more than the 1997 Grand Final loss. That was our big chance and we (coach included) blew it. The other devastating loss was last years embarrassing capitulation to Hawthorn. For a side to be leading 70 to 7 early into the second quarter and lose is beyond comprehension. The psychological scars of that loss are still being felt today with only 4 wins following that fateful day.

Bullshit grendel. 84, Essendon ran all over the top of you, because they were the better side. If anything they should've beaten Hawthorn by considerably more, given their poor kicking up until 3/4 time.

Thankfully they hit the spot in the last and rightfully won the game.

Umm, quite a few spring to mind as an Essendon supporter, although I don't really care to divulge at the moment, seeming though we just won our way into the Granny finally!

Anyway mine would have to be:

1999 Prelim against the baggers - devastating...although it's sits better with me now, given we repaid them the favour yesterday.

1995 Semi against Rich - some would be surprised at my selection, but it was bloody unbearable having to listen to the tiger army bring the house down, after we led by 5 goals at 1/2 time. Geez they were load that day...just wanted to sink into my chair.

1990 GF - was barely a teenager, but it still hurt.

1996 Prelim against Syd - had em on toast with a few mins left...just panicked too much towards the end. Kick after the siren has to be the worst way to go out. For me, it stung.

1996 Qualifying final against Bris - top effort, considering how good Bris were that year, especially at home. Was just demoralising falling a point short. Wangas hitting the post from the top of the square with a few secs left was painful to say the least!

1998 - Carlton vs. Port Adelaide.
Got thrashed, poured with rain and my pie was cold.
1998 - Both Essendon games. In the last one we had them but the bastards beat us by a goal. Adam White's career was ruined because he lost confidence after a combined trio of SOS Ricey and he lost us the game.
1999 - Lost the Grand Final. This explains itself.
2000 - Beaten by Collingwood in round 3. This explains itself also.
2000 - Lost to the Western Bulldogs who ended our winning streak. Crucified by the umpires.
2000 - Round 20 against Essendon. We lost the Koutaman. I didn't give a stuff about losing the actaul game that night.
2000 - O'Reilly can't play ruck + Umpires hate us = goal after the siren and loss.
2000 - Melbourne. We worked our butts off but just couldn't kick straight, therefore we didn't put them away and they beat us cos we were tired out.
"Bye, Bye Premiership cup..."

Oh yea right S.Robbo. Like the Hawks were deadeye dicks in the first half.

I stand by what i say, we threw it away, it should have been stiched up at half time. Still, cant change history and the rest decade from 86 onwards showed who really was the greatest side of that era! :p

The 1994 will always be my worst day at the footy ever.

The game was close all day and to beaten with 2 sec on the clock. You could not talk to me fro days. evem when i atch my roos tapes in the off-season i still shake my head after watching it

Sounds more like the 1989 match. North 6.13, Roys 1.8.

The bleakest afternoon I've ever experienced was the Fitzroy v Geelong match at WO in 1996. It was the day after the administrator had been appointed to wind up the Roys and could well have been the last time the Lions would play, ever. Crowd was about 10,000 (which just showed how few actually cared) and the Roys got done about 25 goals to 6.

My worst day would be the 1984 W.A grand final.
Worked with a yard full of Swans supporters including Peter Sartori(later of Carlton & Fitzroy's - now a millionaire in Hong Kong)dad. Stirring all week both ways. Left work with the comment if we (East Freo) are with you after 15 minutes we'll crap it in.
12 min 1st 1/4 Swans 5.2 East Freo 0.1
1/4 time Swans 10.4 East Freo 0.2
got back to 1 point but fell away.
Hell from old Sartori for months

Western Derby No. 10 was hard to swallow - although I'm glad it was #10 rather than #1.

Other bad days would of been when Jako and Woosha did their knees, I was at both games and it was really sad to see their seasons over.

Another bad day for the club was the 1991 GF, but luckily I wasn't there.

It was about a 7 point loss to the Bears at Carrara. They were starting to make a habit of it and we had sank to our lowest ebb.

The 1999 finals loss at the Gabba was unbearable and I disagree, the Gabba DID have atmosphere that night!!!
