Toast Zac Dawson appreciation thread

Has been good for us, especially when Macca went down a few years ago and Zac had to take over as the main key defender in our backline. Well done Zac.

Not as bad as everyone said but he really should have been delisted about two years ago once it was obvious we had peaked, he had peaked, and we were heading down the route of rebuilding. Only very very good players deserve to hang on for those extra couple of years and he was never even very good. Should have been axed toward the end of 2015.

So you would have dropped him in the season when he was an integral part of the side winning the minor premiership and then lost a Prelim where he played a reasonable game?

Knew his strengths and played to them. He would always get to a contest and make sure his opponent didn't get the ball - usually legally

He gave away 112 free kicks in 89 games for us (and only 67 in 63 for the saints)

I'm going to miss the Golden Fist that is Dawson. He was an instrumental part of Freo making our first ever Grand Final, has been a leader of the troops in the backline.
The coaching and leadership he's provided to Freo's defence is seriously under-rated by a lot of footy fans. I really think he'd be a great coach of defensive structures as a future career.

No one played the clumsy thug like the fist did! To be able to make a FWD earn it without giving away a free and not get reported in this day and age takes some serious skill (although it didn't always work). The mould was broken and he was the last of a dying breed of lock down, one dimensionial defenders who would rather look for the boundary line than look for a team mate. Thanks for always putting your body on the line. The cheap shot followed by the bemused expression will never be forgotton. Thanks for the hits and memories. Thug life...

Freo trivia for those interested -

Zac is the only player from the 2013 grand final team that didnt end up playing at least 100 games freo.

So that means zac is the only one from our Grand final team who won't have Father/son eligibility for Freo

Poor old hapless Jack probably deserved the mantle of 'whipping boy', whereas Zac didn't. As many have already said, he was smart enough to know his limitations and play instead to his skill strengths.

What's even rarer is that the article is written by Ray Maclean - who isn't just any facilitator with leading teams, but the founder himself. That he would go to the length of writing an article on a player and spruik his leadership really means something special. A lot of love for Zac.
