It funny watching Dawson at the Saints.
He is a far better spoiler than Gilham, however when he gets the ball in his hands, you can often see why the Hawks delisted him.
I think St Kilda with their negative "destroy football as a game" and "make the fans want to claw their own eyes out rather than watch their utterly tedious crap" defensive tactics, combined with their very tight amd highly disciplined defence is a perfect match for some one of Dawson's talents. I am sure that if he was in any other defence he would get very badly exposed once the ball hit the ground and started moving.
It is really hard to compared the two players as one's strength is the others weakness i.e. Dawson is a very good spoiler whereas Gilham can struggle, Gilham is completely reliable with the ball in his hands whereas Zac is dodgy. Both of them are fairly slow.
Dawson has far better support with a few other tallish players to help out like Gilbert 194cm and Blake 191cm. In contrast Gilham is the Hawks tallest defender at 192cm and is supported by a retinue of 189cm dwarfs eg Gibson, Stratton & Murphy, none of whom are really tall enough to take a tall forward.
At the end of the day they both do their jobs and in the absence of anyone better they will both continue in their roles.
Dawson is a perfect match for the Saints current defence so I can see them having a high priority in replacing him. The hawks under Pelchoon flatly refuse to to draft any key defensive prospects what so ever. Given that the Hawks need two tall defenders, as by Clarko's own admiission Gilham is really just a zoning third tall and not a key defender, then until such time Clarko and Pelchoon get the sack (end of this season?) then Gilham will continue in the key defensive post.
