The context is that I'm quoting what the average ESSENDON fan has been saying is a fair price until this point.

They know he's contracted
They know the rivalry
They know his playstyle

I'd actually prefer we kept our assets. We've gone from favourites for the spoon and 'tanking for Reid' to Prelim finalists in 24 months through 'Moneyball' trades. Confident we could improve our list more with 2 firsts, a second and keeping Hustwaite than 1 good 30 year old.

Well clubs can't manufacture picks out of thin air, they're allotted picks based on where they end up at the end of the season. Unless they wanna gut the players they have by shopping them around for higher picks and that would be beyond stupid as you only do that for superstar players that are no older than 25, preferably younger.

I thought this draft was shallow and so supposedly there talent difference between 1 and 30 would be negligible.

I have no love for Hawthorn as much as any Bomber fan but that deal is more than reasonable. If the Bombers had competent recruiters and development staff, they could unearth solid players (with any luck even a star that would rival Merrett) with those picks that could play for them for over a decade.

It’s not a terrible offer, but I can completely understand Bombers knocking it back.

Pick 9 will end up being 13 after bids and is in what is being considered a pretty weak draft. Future first and second rounders will both be late in their rounds. Hustwaite hasn’t proven he can take the next step above VFL.

It’s an ok offer, but Bombers have made it clear Merrett isn’t available so Hawks need to come up with something Bombers can’t refuse, probably involving some better players.
