It would be more like selling stock at $50 that you bought for $5 years ago just to buy stock at $10 that is unlikely to do much. Except you don't get to pocket the $40 difference.

Close to the theory but in that example, we shouldn't be content with the $10 stock.

If we are going to trade Tuohy out, then we should be getting the $50 stock (whoever that is).

Yeah exactly. Maybe I've missed something but people aren't convinced Smedts is that stock, which I would agree.
 
You can argue that we have got good value out of Tuohy as a former Cat B rookie. That is very true.

You can't argue that we have won out because we turned a rookie into a former first round draft pick if that former first round draft pick is not as good as Tuohy is now.

If we got an actual first round draft pick for Tuohy though .... we won.

Smedts is 24 now and not a 20 year old that has a huge upside.

That trade would be a shocker for us and no selection numbers are going to make an ounce of difference.

Smedts isn't the issue. It's the logic that trading rookie for a former first rounder is not too shabby that is being argued against.

Which part of that suggests you don't believe the trade is not so shabby on the basis of Smedts being a former first rounder. Smedts doesn't matter. Insert the name of any failed first rounder if you like and re-read it. That is what is being argued against.

Smedts as a stand alone former first-round selection sounds great, Smedts with a record of injury and lacking in game continuity is a disaster waiting to happen.
 
I'd rather bank a few mid-range picks than pick up Smedts. It'd be a good test for SOS to see if he can find a couple of good players, as most good recruiters can at any stage of the draft. If our hand is forced, that is the best option.

Not only is Billy injury prone, he's average and not getting better.
