The Western Bulldogs have secured defender Zaine Cordy until at least the end of the 2021 season, after he agreed to a three-year contract extension this week.

The promising 21-year-old has become a mainstay in the Bulldogs backline and the Club has recognised his potential by moving to extend his stay at VU Whitten Oval.

“Zaine is an important part of our future and we’re thrilled to see him re-sign with the Club,” said Bulldogs General Manager of List and Recruiting, Sam Power.

“He has shown rapid improvement in the early stages of his career and we’re excited about what the future holds for him.

“Zaine is dedicated to learning and improving his game all the time. He is a respected member of the playing group and we believe he is only going to improve as he gains more experience.”

Cordy has played 38 games in his career to date, after being picked in the fourth round of the 2014 NAB AFL Draft as a father-son selection.

He was a member of the 2016 premiership team and rose to a new level as a key defender in 2017, playing 17 games, finishing equal seventh in the Charles Sutton Medal and winning the John Van Groningen Domestique Award and Scott West Most Courageous Award.

Cordy has played eight matches so far this season, averaging 13.6 disposals and five marks per game.

Great news. Was wondering the other day how long it would take for some re-signing news. Plenty out of contract and we’re already in May.

Tobe honnest I never liked him, especially in 2016 when he kept making mistakes and turning football over late in year and during finals.

Il remember him forever for the knee in the face to Ward that was "accidental" which sent ward off for the game and helped us win.

and for the worst 40m set shot on the boundry line against swans in the granny that got us going and killed the butterflies.

He will always come accross as a player to me when ever he has the ball I get worried because he makes the easy hard and the hard easy.

All and all he is a typical Bevo player/character hopefully he continues to evolve and develop. I never rated him but Bevo does and you can see it. He has grown on me and so he sgould.

Despite not being the most talented out there he really grew on me in that 2016 finals series. His defensive efforts in the grand final were huge. Some massive bumps and tackles and never dropped his head.

The fact he filled such an important role and now plays defence so well is great.

His most important moment?

1. Kicking the dogs first goal in the GF?

2. Discombobulating Callan Wards head with his left knee in the Prelim?

No. 2 for knee. Someone make a poll.

Definitely knee. You never want to see anyone injured but evening up the rotations after Roughy was taken out, along with GWS losing its leader and hardest player in a close final cannot be underestimated.

If only he had kneed the caterers who were responsible for the beer fiasco as well as Wards head!

Great news love Zaine and he will be forever known for breaking a 55 year goal drought in GF's!!
