Werribee Tigers vs. Sandringham
Sunday 17th May Chirnside Park at 2:00 PM

Sandringham

B Howard Miles Biddlecombe
HB Steven Maguire Tregear
C Paterakis Summers Gallagher
HF Lynch Crowe Heyne
F S. Clarke Sautner Garrubba
R Stanley L. Fisher Begley
Int Waller R. Eddy Gwilt Geary McEvoy Simpkin Smith King McQualter R. Clarke Armitage Hudghton

Hudghton is back ! According to Lyon today, he may even play two weeks with Sandringham - probably not a bad idea to get him in slowly (especially while Dawson playing so well).

Good to see Leigh Fisher back after his head injury last week.

Maguire named as HB - will be interesting to see where he'll play with Sautner back. Imagine a backline of R Clarke / Hudghton / Maguire ... in the VFL !

The final St Kilda team tomorrow will be interesting - Gwilt, Geary, McEvoy, King (!), McQualter (!?), R Clarke and Armitage have been named for both St Kilda and Sandringham.

Werribee Tigers vs. Sandringham (Reserves)
Sunday 17th May Chirnside Park at 11:10 AM

Sandringham
B Gaertner Gribbin C. Johnston
HB Williams Dean Monaghan
C Smith-Cameron Gilder T. Johnston
HF Plymin B. Eddy Gilchrist
F Gileno Lockwood McGarry
R McGrath Tungatalum Liddell
Int Howard Smith Harektuku Connors Simpkin Waller Cahill Garrubba

Howard will have quite a day, playing for both the Sandringham firsts and the seconds...

Connors has been dropped to the seconds - probably okay after last week. He has put on quite some weight (especially around the shoulders), but he appeared a bit lost at times last week. Come on, Eljay, that's the wrong direction, you can do better !

You should not refer to Sandringham as "the seconds" or "reserves". They are a VFL team affiliated to St Kilda and not St Kilda's "seconds".

They have some very good players who dominate their positions in the VFL. To refer to them as "seconds' does not give them the respect they deserve - Nick Sautner as the most obvious example has been the VFL's leading goal kicker seven times and is probably a more accurate kick than any of St Kilda's forwards.

Yeah but still play's in the VFL......It's the magoo's every way you look at it or Nick Riewoldt would be playing ...seconds , two's or reserves its not AFL champ !!!!!!;)

Any word on Hudghton ?

I think it is a question of respect - if we want seconds, twos or reserves, we should do what Geelong and Collingwood do and try to maintain our 'own' VFL team rather than taking the cheaper option of maintaing an affiliation with a VFL team.

There is a reason why those who follow the VFL (all you need to do is watch the ABC coverage every Saturday for a few weeks) all respect the stand alone teams (Port Melbourne, Frankston, Tasmania).

He did.

And on the weekend even one of the commentators made the blue when talking about one of the St Kilda listed players.

For the saints listed players it is the twos, but understand the point made by others.

Maxy to return this week to take Bradshaw, or will it be The Goose? Only issue with Max is the opposition zoning off as they do not respect his short game or run. Maybe Goose will get the nod for both this reason and a few more games in his legs?

Does anybody have a link to match summarys?

St Kilda's Max Hudghton on the mend

Chris Mitchell | May 18, 2009

Veteran St Kilda defender Max Hudghton made a promising return from injury in the VFL for Sandringham.
He did well enough to ensure he will be considered for Sunday's AFL game against the Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium.
Hudghton, 32, played a key defensive role as Sandringham held off a fast-finishing Werribee to win by 30 points at Werribee.

In his first game of the season after suffering a calf injury, Hudghton took eight marks, to go with 11 possessions.

He played on gun Werribee recruit Marty Pask, holding him goalless, and Tim Bongetti (two goals).

The performance will create a healthy selection headache for St Kilda coach Ross Lyon. Rejuvenated former Hawthorn defender Zac Dawson has done well in the Saints' hot start to the season and they are in no rush to change the team. "Everyone has to bang down the door to get back in. The reality is it's no difference for Max," Lyon said last week.

Sandringham coach Andy Lovell said it was just a matter of time before the popular defender forced his way back into the AFL team. "He just needs to get game time and build up some resilience in his body so that he's match-fit and match hard," Lovell said. "He just has to get himself right to play AFL footy."

It was Raph - both the 2 goals and getting in the best.

Looks like Armo sat out the game as the emergency for the Essendon game, and Raph/Macca got game time. Not sure whether Macca would have played a full game (as insurance for the Saints game).

Good to see Rob Eddy bounce back with a big one.

With Goose, I'd say Nathan Thompson not playing would have allowed us to continue the experiment. The way he was kicking for goal last game, along with one grab marking, you'd be mad not to try it again. Sandy has made the mistake of being too Sautner-oriented in previous games.

Brad Howard seems to have slipped back a little (now playing reserves).

Matt Maguire fires Sandringham's attack on Werribee

Chris Mitchell | May 18, 2009

Reborn St Kilda star Matt Maguire continues to impress in his new role as a power forward after tearing apart Werribee in the VFL.

Maguire, fresh from a five-goal haul against the Northern Bullants last weekend, booted 5.2 and had 12 marks and 13 possessions in Sandringham's 30-point win at Werribee.

Maguire is making a comeback after two seasons wrecked by serious leg injuries. The win moved the Zebras to fifth on the ladder with a 3-5 record.
Maguire, 24, who has played six games for Sandringham this season, formed a potent partnership with spearhead Nick Sautner, who booted 7.5, as the inaccurate Zebras won 17.11 (113) to 12.11 (83).

Coach Andy Lovell said Maguire, who is stranded on 99 AFL games after making his debut in 2002, could force his way back into the Saints side as a strong-marking forward. "Now that we have seen him play forward in the VFL it is probably worth considering," he said."It just gives him another string to his bow. "He's gone forward two weeks in a row and kicked 10 goals. He's improving his fitness, his form is strong. "The three games we've lost we've had no forward structure. Having Sautner and Maguire there was good."

Sandringham took the foot off the accelerator in the second half to let the Tigers back in the game. The Zebras led by a point at quarter time, 16 at half time and 31 at the last change, but Werribee refused to surrender.

For Sandringham, AFL-listed Robert Eddy (28 disposals) and Raphael Clarke (25) were strong contributors, while St Kilda ruckman Ben McEvoy didn't damage his chances of an AFL recall with 17 disposals, six marks and 17 hitouts.

Maybe Macca did have a decent hit-out.

Read over the weekend that Nathan Thompson (who would have been Max's opponent at Werribee) has gone in for heart surgery

Yeah, but apparently all fixed. He has an irregular heartbeat and they're able to fix that by isolating the whatsit that's sending the extra electricity to the heart and taking that F##ker out.

Hmmm.

No passion for the former Mr Leisel Jones?

Wow thats some really good news from the VFL. Thanks for posting guys.
I gotta say, what a tantalising thought that Matt Maguire is as a power forward.
Imagine a forward line with the power of Rewoldt Kositzki Maguire and Milne Gwilt Shnider hanging around 50 helping out in the centre and dishing out to those power forwards.. oooow im excited!
