Why is this not a thing?

Have umpires specialise as either an I50 umpire or a Centre Umpire.

1 x I50 umpire inside each 50 Arc. Their sole job is to adjudicate on marking contests inside the 50s. That's it.

2 x Centre Umpires. Each has one half of the field, they don't cross halfway and they adjudicate everything between the 2 arcs and adjudicate non-marking contests inside the arcs.

It's really, really f*n simple way of improving umpiring.

You don't make any sense. Are you suggesting that marking contests in the Inside 50 are any different around the ground?

Why stop there. Do you need a holding the ball specialist inside the arc too?

Didn't you realise there is already an umpire inside each arc to adjudicate marking contests?

I'm talking about having umpires who are very, very good at adjudicating particular instances, like in the NHL and NFL. It works so well to hand some responsibility to certain refs, it allows them to focus on certain rules to become experts. At the moment we ask every umpire to be a jack of all trades.

Marking contests on centre wing don't attract nearly the same scrutiny as those inside 50. So my plan is to have those umpires who are specialists parked in I50.

Still a pointless exercise. So you're saying there are 3 long kicks with a quick passage of play up the ground from HB to FF and because there are only 2 umpires in middle of ground, 1 of them is struggling to get up to the forward line. Misses a HTB but his mate shrugs his shoulders and says "sorry, I saw it but I'm only here for expertise in marking contests". I've wasted enough time in this pointless thread.

Okay well for starters, there only ever used to be 2 AFL umpires for the whole ground but no what you think I'm saying is not what I'm saying.

I could re-explain everything but then again you could re-read everything.

Or go play with crayons, your call.
