Recruiting AFL Trade & Free Agency XII - 💰💰💰

Jacob Konstaky is the one we should be well and truly into imo. Not sure how he’s been performing in the reserves but looked really good in his draft year.
Very patchy last year with a lot of low possession games with minimal impact. Has played R1 and R4 VFL this year and kicked a couple of goals first up then 3 in round 4. 11 tackles in two games.

I do wonder how much money we will have, i know the cap keeps increasing

But we seem to be paying these guys a fair bit id imagine

Zerrett
Parish
Mckay
Gresham
Redman
Ridley
2MP
N.Martin
Mcgrath - His new deal
Stringer - Probably going to be getting a decent pay the next 2 years aswell

Then LDU would be our highest paid in 2026 if he came

If someone offered us C.Daniel or a pick around 30 for Will Setterfield this year then id probably take it if we thought we were right in the running for LDU in 12 months time

I know ive said we have had great depth in the midfield for a while and we do

But LDU as a FA end of 2025 has to be a priority. Ive rated this guy extremely highly for a while and alot of non fans say we have a middle of the road side but not many true stars outside of Zerrett

Regardless a FA of this quality without having to give up draft capital is huge

Small forwards and HBF maybe of greater priority but we can still use top end draft picks on them or see what other FAs are around in that space

2026 Side:

Mcgrath - Mckay - Ridley (N.Cox)
Redman - Z.Reid - Martin

Z.Merrett(30>31) - Parish - Duursma (Tsatas)
N.Bryan/Draper - LDU - Durham (Hobbs)

Caldwell - H.Jones/Stringer - Perkins (Davey)
Caddy - 2MP - Langford

Is an elite side in a great age demographic

I think Durham and most certainly LDU would move past a 28 yr old Setterfield

Z.Merrett can play outside of the onball division in a year hes turning 31

Weve still kept 1st round picks for 2024 and 2025 that would be on the list in reserves based on this

LDU a genuine no brainer if we can land him as a FA. Precisely what we need in the midfield.

Key defender stocks are good, no concerns there. A more mature small forward would be nice but you are taking an LDU first every day of the week.

I would seriously look at Francis Evans from Port. Is a tackling/pressure beast in the SANFL and VFL before that, team first player and hits the scoreboard regularly. Has been starved of opportunity in a stacked Geelong/Port Adelaide forward line since being drafted. Would be cheap as chips too.

Genuine question with the intrigue around recruiting LDU and how he fits into our mids. AFL.com.au lists him as 188cm, I know he has pace, ability to find the ball and break the line but wouldn't he be a bit like we've had for many years? Not doubting he isn't worth it but considering we've been crying out for a genuine A-grade big-bodied mid, wouldn't that money be worth going out and bolstering our mids that way?

Again, fully understand that a mid like LDU doesn't just come up in trade/FA every year but I just wonder if the lure of getting another player of similar size like we have 3-4 of anyway may not be as worth it. I haven't read too far back on this forum to see if it's been discussed so my apologies if it's been spoken about before but would love to hear thoughts as that's my only real worry with recruiting him.

I actually really liked the person that said throw money at Finn Callaghan. 192cm, ball winner and his upside and growth is only going to improve the more he plays. Proven to be good at this point too! Would be hard to pull from GWS, they'd definitely want at least a top ten + something else for him. But, that's where I'd look if I had a say.

A bit up in the air though - there's a query over all of them bar McKay, really (Ridley obviously a gun if you count him as KPD) -

Laverde - has been really solid since he's moved to the backline, but in reality should probably be fringe now
Weideman - VFL level
Reid - 9 games of a possible 75-odd
Baldwin - 3 AFL games as a defender, with 4 as a forward (overall 7 AFL games of a possible 75-odd)
Hayes - 0 games

I'd definitely consider another KPF if the chance arose, I don't think we're set there at all.

We've still got a lot of question marks on our list, if by the end of the year Hayes gets a debut and looks AFL standard then we'd have Reid who is AFL standard if his body stay together, Hayes, and then Baldwin TBC.

Would still have McKay long-term as well.

Daniel for Setterfield would be horrible. Even if Setterfield isn’t best 22 with the rise of Durham and Caldwell he’s still great depth and abit of a pod in our midfield

Definitely, especially regarding the KPD's.

If Hayes doesn't get a game this week, he probably doesn't this season. Beyond that, do they want him to stay? And does he want to stay?

Reid and Baldwin would have to have almost unheard of turnarounds.

In two years we could be talking about which one we need to squeeze out - but all three could also be gone (for different reasons).

Bit early to say Hayes will not get a game this season if he does not play this week. I would play him but you can hardly blame the coach for not changing the line up that has worked for the last 3 weeks. Last year at this stage it was everyone questioning if Bryan would want to stay. Who knows what will be happening in round 12 or 15 or 20.

Knowing what we know now, the Shiel deal was a mistake. No one is denying that.

But at the same time, we kinda got half-let off in the end, considering we got Caldwell from the same draft of one of the picks we gave up. Would we have chosen Caldwell at the time? You could argue that, but he's becoming a jet.

Duursma, who was taken just a couple picks after Caldwell in the same draft (who we turned a pick 66 BZT into) has cushioned it a little more in hindsight.

#35 going back ending up as #30 from North (Harry Jones) as mentioned above, was a decent lever to pull.

And Bergman hasn't exactly set the world alight. So yes, it was a mistake, but the aftermath of it could have been much, much worse. We got off lightly IMO.
Great work Call Me Cake
Was trying to pull the Sheil trade wash up together but my head was starting to hurt.

Headline (2 first rounders) sounds tragic, the actual wash up isn’t that bad.

We gave up our 2018 and 2019 first rounders, with GWS's 2019 second coming back to us with Shiel. That's the long and the short of it. Anything about who we took with other picks has nothing to do with it. Drafting other players, trading up selections etc all comes at further cost.

Rumour has it, that if you say "Shiel is good" three times Hank pops out of thin air.

Don't get around as much as I used to. It's been so long since anyone has uttered the phrase and truly believed it.
Nah, you just hate him and always have.

Plus the other guy you hate is currently having a great year so you have to double your criticism of Shiel

Whose that?
