Choose a player and go to that's player debut game. Find his teammate who debuted at the earliest time. Then go to that player's debut and find the next player who debuted at the earliest time. Continue until you reach Round 1, 1897. The goal is to find the shortest chain connecting the current round to Round 1, 1897.

I've done this on Reddit and the lowest scores at the moment are 10, for Scott Pendlebury, Aaron Sandilands and any Bombers who played alongside Dustin Fletcher. If you can get 9, I'd be surprised. You don't necessarily need to use a player's debut game.
