The early albums are ok but with Conor Oberst it's more the song than an album I like, for example I Will Be Grateful For This Day off a rarities album could be my favourite of Bright Eyes. It's their (his?) best by a landslide. Lifted.. is pretty cool too and he experimented with a heap of new sounds and it's basically Conor's 'Figure 8' album but it's not on the same level. I'm Wide Awake was him at his creative and poetic peak.
His earliest albums are good too; raw and insightful and full of nice little observations and poetic surprises.
After he got off the drugs his music became pretty boring, but he's still got a nice little legacy which has never been overstated or exaggerated beyond how conceivably good it is.
