with kick, allow the ball to land on the flattest bony part of ur foot.
follow thru is important due to how long the ball impacts ur foot so u point the direction u want to kick otherwise ull shank it.

no worries mate. essentially feel around ur foot. the part thats "bonyest" with no muscle is where u want to kick the ball with cos itll have the greatest energy transfer. Essentially u just dont want to kick the ball to high on the foot or toepoke it.
but wat it does really come down to is ur technique and timing. practice makes perfect. get the knee to bend as much as u can wen u go for a kick to get the most power generated.

*some stuff i learn in sport science ;)

Most people run in an ark to gain increased distance, to gain not leg speed, left footers are generally no known as the worst offenders but most do it . Alot of players are more accurate on the run than set shot as during a set shot they actually drop the ball and rotate the hips as they would on the run but actually run straight , most right footers miss to the left and most left footer to the right and generally the ball has poorer projectory from set shot .
The ideal circumstance is to increase the speed inwhich the leg is making connect with the ball , generally higher back swing , without running in an ark , therefore allowing the player to run straight all the time !

Re: Goal Kicking Tips and Tricks

My thoughts:

1) Don't worry too much about specifics of technique or trying to copy someone else - there are a variety of effective kicking techniques. It is more important to establish a technique that is able to be reproduced time and again.

2) routine - document it on paper and refer back to it. ALWAYS use it for any shot in practice.

3) Always practice with someone standing the mark or an object to simulate this (Matthew Lloyd adhered to this religiously)

4) Be more concerned with the feel of the kick, sound of contact, trajectory of the ball etc to assess your kick. Don't get caught up in thinking about the biomechanical aspects as this has proven to cause "paralysis by analysis" and is susceptible to high pressure situations.
Nice post onlinecoach :thumbsu:

Liked points 1 and 4 in particular. There's an article I wrote on teaching kids to kick that covers some of the same ground.

New study (September 2010) out of Flinders University in South Australia finds that misses to the right may be subconscious.

Background:
Cerebral asymmetries for spatial attention generate a bias of attention--causing lines to be bisected to the left or right in near (within reach) and far (outside reach) space, respectively.

Purpose:
This study explored whether the rightward deviation for bisecting lines in far space extends to tasks where a ball is aimed between two goal-posts, as with kicks in Aussie rules football.

Results:
There was no deviation in the one-goal kicking condition--demonstrating that no asymmetries exist in the perceptual motor system when aiming at a single point.

However, when kicking or pointing at the middle between two goal posts, rightward deviations were observed. The number of misses to the left or right of goal in Australian Rules Football for the 2005-2009 seasons was assessed. The data showed more rightward deviations for kicks at goal.

Conclusions:
Combined, the studies suggest that the rightward deviation for lines placed in far space extends to the kicking of a football.

Coaches may, therefore, want to design training programs to teach players to aim slightly left of centre.

Re: Exercises to kick longer

Total hip machine

Power in kicking comes from the hip flexors and progresses down the kinetic chain. Do it as a plyometric exercise.

And technique of course.

how do you use this? was trying different machines at this gym in thailand and this one had me confused as hell

I have modelled my drop punt on Shannon Hurn. He is a small but stocky player. He generates his power from his glutes and quads. One of the most penetrating and accurate kicks in the AFL pity eagles don't have more!! check out some of his work on youtube.

Does the study differentiate between left and right footers? Missing to the right for a left footer is a hook, for a right footer it's a slice.

Would think that a right footer would miss to the right more often because the top of your foot slopes down that way... or is that too simplistic?
