That's astonishing. you'd have to be pretty upset if you were Brady or Manning. Hopefully he pans out for the Rams. Think 50 million guaranteed is ridiculous money for a rookie. Thoughts?

Usually love the way the NFL is run but this is one the weakest points. An absolute joke what rookies 'earn'. Some are mentally 'gone' after they sign the contracts, especially the ones that don't really love the game. Just demotivates them further.

Yeah this is one thing they need to fix - Go NBA style, rookie salary scale.

Will the NFLPA budge on that issue do you reckon?

The AFL has it right on this one actually: you nominated yourself for the draft, you were drafted by this team, now you're signed to this team for this amount of time for this remuneration. DONE! THANK YOU!

Let's not use the AFL as an example
Considering that the AFL has no free agency, AFL draftees only get two years on their contract. After their contract is finished - they can enter a Russian Roulette of going to a new team with a likely chance of going to an even worse team.

Due to all of this, the AFL can afford to have short term, small contracts as they practically have the rights to the player throughout his professional playing career. Compared to long term NFL contracts which are used to protect their investments and keep them happy while playing at the club.

In regards to Bradford and this contract (ignored this thread initially as I have posted my thoughts in other threads), the Rams have $100 million tied up in guarantee money from our top draft picks in the last three drafts. All those draft picks have shown nothing towards being the core of the team for years to come. The Rams have been building conservatively with building the trenches and now the QB to lead the team so if they are going to succeed, this should be the season.

Its staggering how a team could be quite happy to pay that.
How many years is it over?

It's actually $78 million over 6 years.
But it's broken down into $50M guaranteed and $28M in bonuses.
The $50M guaranteed means he is getting $50M for sure no matter what, but it's broken down over 6 years, in allotments however they agreed to.
The $28M in bonuses he may never see, probably wont see.
Usually, some of it is unlikely stuff (like winning 3 SBs, 2 MVPs etc) and a lot of it is performance-based stuff like reaching set statistical goals, throwing more than 50% of the team's passes, getting in early to team camp every season, etc etc.

If they don't bring in rookie pay scale, i dont see why they cant just ensure contracts are heavily laden in bonuses and very little of it guaranteed.

Eg, Instead of a #1 like Bradford going for $50M guaranteed and $28M bonuses. Something more like $68M in bonuses (many of them do-able and realistic and increase the more he proves himself as a franchise QB), and only $10M guaranteed.

Take Jamarcus Russell for instance. If they had a contract system like I said, and that was the norm, then it would be up to JR to earn that money. If he proved himself, then he would've got all that money deservedly. And if he did what he did, he would've got very little deservedly, couldnt take the organization for a ride, and wouldn't crucify teams who are constantly picking in the top 10, like the Rams/Lions are struggling to financially manage.
