What's up with Jimmy? I'm an absolute huuuuuge fan of his but he can't seem to crack it into the ODI team. The only time he gets to play is when Gilly is out resting and we need a back-up keeper.

Also, anyone reckon he'd be a chance for the Test Team to Sri Lanka? Of course he'd be behind Clarke, Katich, Hodge, Love etc. but anyone reckon he'll be given a chance or be considered?

Maher is first in line for the Test team if an opening spot becomes available, IMO.
Would have thought Love would play as as an opener if a spot became available. Reckon Maher is a fair way behind in the Test pecking order.

Even though I would have preferred to taken Ryan Campbell as a backup ODI keeper, good luck to Maher for gaining some wicket-keeping skills (probably had to given he can't bowl to keep his place in the squad). Handy ODI batsman, as he can bat anywhere in the order.

Now that Steve Waugh is gone, Matthew Elliott just might be back in contention, should Langer fail this summer.

Yeah, he'll be up there with Suzi Olsen...

True that Jimmy Maher can open the batting as well as bat anywhere else in the order. Would have thought Katich could only bat from between 3-7. Doubt he could open the batting. Same could be said of Clarke and Hodge. Can't see them opening batting in Tests. Both should be around 3-6. Love is the only other batsman that comes to mind that can bat in the open position. Would think he is close to next in line

Katich 118 from 108 balls opening for NSW against Tas.

OK it was a one dayer... but Katich wouldnt be the worst test opening option.

No way Elliot will ever get back in the side, so if Langer has a bad series, the door might just be open for Maher... or even Katich.

Love hasn't opened for Queensland for years.

Why does everyone seem to think that just because Langer - who replaced a woefully out of sorts Slater towards the end of an Ashes tour when there was no 3rd opener in the squad - was made into a make-shift opener that our next opener will also be a middle order batsman?

Maher is the best opening batsman in the country that's not currently in the Test side.

Who's thinking that?

In any case, Langer was for most of his career a no. 3, not middle order bat. Theres been plenty of batsmen over the years interchanging from 1st drop to opening, or vice versa. Langer is just another.

I agree on Maer though, he is clearly the next best opening candidate IMO.
