maybe i'm losing my mind but having travis cloke being our forward coach is insane to think about considering towards the end of his career he could barely hit the side of a barn within 40 meters.

surely that's not a permanent position, right?
He’s a forwards coach not a goal kicking specialist coach. Cloke had unbelievable forward nouse, leading patterns, elite body work etc

that part is a worry, but he was great at all the wrestling/bodywork/pack crashing and general big guy stuff that our big guys cannot do
when he was playing i'd agree but from what i saw at games/on the television this year (apart from langers) we'd regressed physically in the f50 (from my perspective), but i think that generally comes from essendon being side that is not particularly physical
I would think a forward coach would be more interested in the forwardline as a unit and prioritise creating set shots at goal over how to actually kick a ball.
i suppose that is true, but i think the cohesiveness of our forwardline went missing at a few stages during the season.

i don't disagree that when he played he had elite forward craft sans goalkicking, but i just can't see how it was reflected this year seeing how our forward line played. at various stages of the year we'd see langers, weids, 2mp etc all leading into a similar spot or trying to contest a ball that had one of our other key forwards in position to mark (or attempt to), making the work for the defense much easier than you'd expect with two strong contested markers (langord/wright). i will concede however that while 2mp''s marking went backwards (due in part to both recovering from a shoulder injury, and having defenders climb all over him without infringing somehow) it was clear that langer's marking had improved substantially.

Hopefully we can get coaches in for the first time in Dodo's tenure that know how to develop players.

I'd be going hard at Shannon Hurn if we could get him to move to Melbourne. Jack Riewoldt would be a great forwards coach too imo
Apart from the above, Tom Jonas or Daniel Rich would also be good for defence. Not sure if Tapping will continue given his health. Something like:

Head: Brad Scott

Defence: Shannon Hurn/Tom Jonas/Daniel Rich
Midfield: Daniel Giansiracusa
Forward: Jack Riewoldt

Head of Development: Brent Stanton
First to fourth year players: Michael Hurley
General Development: Ben Jacobs (plus two others)

VFL Head Coach: ???
VFL Defence: Michael Hurley
VFL Midfield: Ben Jacobs
VFL Forward: ???

Have the head coach of the VFL and forwards coach also be development coaches during the week.

Really? Why?
Bit of a jump for a bloke that doesn't appear (from the outside) to have been much chop in any of his post-playing gigs.
Thought he went well as VFL coach for us honestly despite the lack of talent he had. We're more likely to hire internally than externally and I don't think Roberts has been exemplary in that role.

Plenty of people around the traps rate him . Speaks well when he has been on radio. There are plenty who say he is doing as good a job as Williams and he was very highly rated for his footy IQ at the Giants.

I know you can also make an argument it doesn't really matter that much - and it may well not - but I also like that he had to really fight his way into the league. Did it the hard way. He's the earliest example for me of a player like that (rookie list/SSP/etc.) actually 'making it'.

You’re not going to get 2 fresh out of the game players to be senior assistants a run 2 lines. That’s extremely risky

Risky, sure. I'm also in a "let's blow s**t up" mood tbf though

Actually, Hodge would be great if Brad can swing that Brissy connection, but if not Hodge then Simon Black could do with a change of scenery. Doubtful since he has spent his career in Brisbane, but I hope Brad might ask the question of his former Premiership teammate: Want a change of scenery?

Hodge’s family is settled in Qld, no chance he comes back to Victoria to coach

hire a decent defence coach pls.

Blake is one of the best assistant coaches in the league and has the best resume in the league. I think it's more likely to be that we don't have a great list balance of players and it's a very young list as well, but are giving them time to develop, we also don't get consistent output from our senior guys in terms of showing the way every game. I think fitness and strength is more of an issue and synthesis of list than it is the coaching. Losing Ridley didn't help. He's borderline A-Grade, easily, great kick and one of our best marks.

Development, fitness and psychology seem to be more of a concern also ridding the culture of the last decade and trying to be a fresh club with a new outlook.

Blake probably realises this is a genuinely grindy challenge, but you need the list as well.

Melbourne might look to change over a few coaches this off season. We should push hard for mark Williams to come, would be great for our younger players.

Troy Chaplin has largely been the architect of their defensive set up but given how well it is still holding up it’s not the issue.
