Get to know Nathan Freeman

"NATHAN Freeman was an elite junior player who provided spark, leadership and pure class whether he was playing for Cheltenham Panthers, Dingley Dingos, Haileybury College, Sandringham Dragons or Vic Metro.

Freeman’s greatest attribute is his raw speed. It’s what attracted recruiters and scouts in the first place and it is what will be his x-factor at St Kilda."

"Physically, St Kilda’s medical department is supremely confident he will withstand the rigours of a full pre-season and it will not only be Freeman that is the beneficiary of the Saints doctors and physios, it will also be the fans. "

Bugger..

"This will put him back a week or two," said Cox, calling the injury a "regulation strain."

Cox said Freeman, who did the right hamstring a few days ago, was "fine" and dealing well with the setback.

"The strain involves his right hamstring - which he has had some previous trouble with - although it involves a different area of the muscle," Cox said.

"He will need to pull back from training for a little while to give it time to recover although we don't see it as a major problem.

"Nathan has been fitting in really well, training strongly and he has completed plenty of conditioning to this point," he said.

"While this is a set-back, overall we have been very happy with the health of our playing list for this time of the year."

hopefully it's nothing serious and he can be back on the track soon after the Christmas break.

St Kilda recruit Nathan Freeman in 'terrific spirits', despite new hamstring injury

St Kilda recruit Nathan Freeman is in terrific spirits despite suffering yet another hamstring injury, the club's football manager says.

Twenty-year-old Freeman was a number 10 draft pick for Collingwood in 2013, but he struggled with hamstring injuries and did not play a senior game for the 'Pies before requesting a trade to the Saints a few months ago.

Cox played down the injury, saying Freeman was not worried about the setback.

The midfielder would be back running on Monday.

"We'll do his rehab over Christmas with the view of getting into full training in the New Year," Cox said.

St Kilda upbeat despite Nathan Freeman’s latest hamstring setback, confident he can have long career

ST KILDA is confident recruit Nathan Freeman can have a long career at the Saints despite his injury curse following him to the club.

“We’ll back our very senior and experienced medical guys through this process,” Cox said on Saturday.

“They’ve given us terrific feedback all the way through that they believe that this is something, with a few adjustments, that Nathan can beat and still have a long career.

“Nothing’s changed in that regard.

“The guys are still very confident, despite just a small hiccup, that he can still be a terrific AFL footballer for a long time for us.”

“It wasn’t a major mishap, it was obviously disappointing for Nathan because he’d been training really strongly and was starting to run at full clip again,” he said.

“He’s in great spirits. He knows that he’s got a lot of good conditioning under his belt in the couple of months he’s been at the club.

krk004 coming back with a run on dodgy Hammies.

We're supposed to be talking about Ham's at this time of year, not Hammies KRK!

I think it's gonna be a while before we can write 'Freeman' without having to write 'hamstring' in the same post.

Good news that it does look like a very minor strain. It's been a while since the #10 has graced the football field, here's to seeing it again early 2016!

As a mild-mannered advocate, got to report on all his news, where I can.

ATM, the focus is on him getting through the pre-season - next it will be him getting through games - then it will be playing seniors - then consolidating himself........

Reserve judgement people's, look back after water has flowed under the bridge & then make your assessments on Nathan, Trout, Bains etc.

St Kilda SaintsNathan Freeman
Highly touted youngster Nathan Freeman will be hoping a change of scenery will allow him to find some luck after departing the Pies without making his senior debut. The former first-round draft pick has endured two injury-plagued seasons at Collingwood, which has kept him out of action even at VFL Level.

Freeman has elite endurance and pace with good ball skills and he wins plenty of contested footy. He was often criticised for being a one-way runner in his junior ranks, yet appears to have worked hard to become the complete package. Freeman may struggle early to squeeze into a fairly settled St Kilda midfield, yet will apply plenty of pressure on the likes of Maverick Weller, Sebastian Ross and Jack Sinclair if they fail to perform.

Injuries have cruelled the new Saint but if his body holds up he’s got plenty of motivation to prove a few doubters wrong. The Saints coughed up a 2016 second-round draft pick to get him, so you’d think he’ll play straight away when ready. Definitely a risk-reward selection.

Nathan Freeman hamstring: Saints recruit ruled out of NAB Challenge

ST KILDA recruit Nathan Freeman has been ruled out of the NAB Challenge as the club continues a cautious approach to his hamstring troubles.

“We’re going to be really conservative with Freezer. He’s a young man that hasn’t played footy for a couple of years. He’s exactly what we need to compliment Dunstan, Armitage and Seb Ross ... But he’s going to take a while, so we certainly won’t rush him,” Saints coach Alan Richardson told SEN radio.

“He possibly could play, but we just need to make sure we get really significant miles into the legs so when the load really does step up on game day, he’s right to go and he’s not at risk.”

Sneak Previews – Nathan Freeman (StK)

I can’t think of a more controversial trade that has involved an untried player. Collingwood picked up Freeman in the 2013 Draft at Pick 10.

Freeman was right up there with the elite juniors of his year. He stood out at the Sandringham Dragons with his turn of foot and ability to win his own ball.

With that good junior form aside, Freeman’s body just hasn’t adapted to the rigors of AFL football. According to the Saints, their medical staff spent plenty of time assessing Freeman prior to the trade. Despite their ‘green light’ and a modified program during pre-season, another hamstring strain occurred before Christmas. While there’s still plenty of time to recover, it remains to be seen whether Freeman’s body will ever be fully fit.

Nathan has been in main group for a little bit now, he just gets pulled out occasionally to work on certain aspects of his continual strengthening and conditioning program.
If there was a final today we would have had him available, but there's no point at all in rushing him in a pre season of a year where we are not challenging.
Keep hanging in there guys, barring any mishaps he is getting closer to playing some form of competitive footy in the near future.

St Kilda assistant coach Adam Kingsley says Saints are hungry for September action

But for St Kilda to take the next step, the harsh reality is it needs its young players to improve rapidly.

Two youthful Saints in Paddy McCartin and Nathan Freeman are both hamstrung and are unlikely to have an influence early in the season.

Freeman in particular has been wrapped in cotton wool since he arrived at Seaford following two years of persistent soft tissue troubles, while McCartin’s hamstring strain in NAB 1 means he’s highly unlikely to play for St Kilda in its season opener.

Freeman, who was pick No. 10 in the 2013 national draft, has tentatively been pencilled in for a return in late April.

“He’s all good and he’s fit but we are really cautious with him,” Kingsley said.

“He hasn’t played a game in two years with various hamstring injuries. We’re making sure we bulletproof his body before we roll him out.

“I wouldn’t expect to see him in the early part of the season. I would think around Round 5 and Round 6 he would be ready to go.”

Saint Freeman set to run out for Sandringham reserves

ST KILDA recruit Nathan Freeman will play for the Sandringham reserves on Saturday as he steps up his recovery from hamstring injuries.

Freeman, who was repeatedly sidelined in his two years at Collingwood, strained his right hamstring again in December during his first summer with the Saints.

The 20-year-old did not feature in the NAB Challenge, but with just over a month of full training under his belt, will play in his first competitive match of the year against the Box Hill Hawks reserves.

Recruited with pick No.10 at the 2013 NAB AFL Draft, Freeman left the Magpies in search of a fresh start, partly due to the fitness troubles he had suffered at the Holden Centre.

The Saints traded a future second-round pick for the speedy midfielder.

Positive return for Saint Nathan Freeman in VFL reserves

MAGPIE-turned-Saint Nathan Freeman has provided the best evidence yet that his hamstring curse could be over, amassing a phenomenal 46 possessions in three quarters of a VFL reserves game on Saturday.

Before Freeman took the field for the development league team of St Kilda's VFL affiliate Sandringham, in his first proper match in two years, the Saints were hoping he would merely get through the game unscathed.

After all, the No. 10 pick from the 2013 NAB AFL Draft hadn't played a single AFL game in two seasons at Collingwood and suffered another setback this pre-season.

But Freeman couldn't have been more dominant, with his 19-kick, 27-handball and one-goal effort piloting his team to a seven-point win over Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval.

The speedy 20-year-old midfielder set a cracking pace with 15 touches in the first term and maintained that breakneck speed for his next two quarters before sitting out the final term.

The only apparent problem to arise from the game for Freeman was a serious bout of leather poisoning.

The Zebras have a bye next week so Freeman will presumably target a VFL seniors return against Footscray at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on April 23, in his quest to achieve his long-awaited AFL debut.
