MFC: Pre-season update: Viney to Clark

10. Shannon Byrnes
A dual premiership player with Geelong, Shannon arrived at the club as an unrestricted free agent. He has since shown genuine leadership and has taken a few guys under his wing. Shannon has been really good at teaching our players on and off the field, which has been super for our forward line. Having come from a successful club, he adds a lot to our group and has been a fantastic addition to the club.

Sure we all know about (and have swooned over) his five-goal intra-club performance, but I at least wanted to leave these here.

MFC: Byrnes shines in first Dees hit-out
Former Geelong small forward Shannon Byrnes kicked five first-half goals and was the clear standout in the scrappy affair that set the scene for the matches against Richmond and North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

Melbourne coach Mark Neeld checked his calendar before lavishing too much praise. The real season is still six weeks away but he admitted Byrnes' performance was a pleasing outcome out of the match.
The Age: Byrnes stars for Demons
Byrnes, who played 108 games and in two premierships for the Cats before joining Melbourne as an unrestricted free agent, was a stand-out in the two opening 20-minute quarters, although coach Mark Neeld noted there was still a long time before the season began.
''It's the 15th of February. But he's been really good for us over summer with his leadership and the way he plays,'' Neeld said.

MFC: Byrnes already sees improvement
NEW DEMON Shannon Byrnes says he has seen genuine progress in the squad since his arrival at the club last October.

The dual Geelong premiership player was upbeat about the development shown by Melbourne this pre-season, but he said it was difficult to predict how the team would fare in 2013.

“I’ve seen the improvement in three months and, speaking to the coaches, from where we’re at now as opposed to 12 months ago, they think it’s unrecognisable,” he said.

“That can only be a positive sign, but how many wins and losses that translates to remains to be seen.

All you can do is prepare yourself as best as you can, and I think the group has made a strong effort to do that. We’ve got ourselves in a reasonable position to play some good footy early, and hopefully we’ll get some wins early in the season.”
