We thought it was about time that Bigfooty had its own place for science discussion and all that it encompasses.

This board will be the place where we can look at, discuss and wonder about the planet, technology and the expanding universe.

All the usual board rules apply.
We only ask, in true scientific style, that you post with respect to reason, rationale and evidence.

About this board
This board will house discussion of a variety of scientific developments, initiatives, news and innovations, as well as more general scientific debates. While there are a few threads already posted to get us started, we need your help to create a board that all can enjoy.

The Random news and articles thread, pinned atop the page, will house all scientific developments/articles not major enough to warrant a thread of their own, but may be of interest to other users. Feel free to contribute anything that you see fit.

The Science and you thread serves as a great way to get to know others involved in the community. We're interested in hearing about your connection to science, whether it be occupational, a hobby, or something more.

The Tag a friend link is simply a way for us to grow the board in its early stages. If you know of somebody on the site that you think may be interested in the board, tag them into this thread.

The General space discussion thread is intended as a catch-all for space-related chatter, images, video and other media that isn't tied to a new event. If there's a new development related to space, consider starting a new thread for it instead.


Some ideas for other types of threads that you might like to create:
Specific discussion topics - e.g. "Plausibility of time travel." Ongoing debate around some of the Universe's biggest, specific questions. Got a question you're interested in discussing? Post it!

New developments - catch wind of an exciting scientific development or finding that you think warrants discussion? Start a thread and link to it so others can get involved.

Other general discussion threads - is there a topic that already has a lot of information out there, like space? Feel free to create a thread.



Overall, we hope to build a community where all are free to have input and debate, no matter what side of the argument you're on, or how much experience in/knowledge of the field you have. With that said, we hope that several fundamental assumptions underlie the culture of the board:

• The scientific method is robust when applied correctly.
• Technology is generally neutral, not good or evil. The application is where the philosophical questions arise.
• At the same time, intuition and "a bad feel" is not always an unreasonable reason to reserve judgement or disagree with the hard science. Exploring the origin of that feeling that goes against the data is a useful discussion to have.

There is at some times a fine line between scientific debate and mystery/conspiracy, so please try to consider which board is most appropriate for your post where necessary - but some overlap is expected.
