Marty McFly has done himself a mischief and has altered the course of Aussie footy in ways you can't imagine!
Get ready to dive into alternate futures!

What is “What If” Wednesdays?
"What if" Wednesdays was a competition comprised of real-life football team proposals, merger propositions, former teams and a few hypotheticals brought to life by the FJGD community (eg. If the Melbourne-Hawthorn merger went ahead, if University/Fitzroy/Bris Bears stuck around, if Gold Coasts nickname were the Lifesavers etc.) it became this boards longest running competition (8/9/14 – 29/5/19). It has been revived under a meme cultured spin-off! Time traveller sneezes memes are all about butterfly effects on various things caused by a time traveller altering the past by means of a simple sneeze.

What’s new this time around?
This time or these times around, we will be flung into various timelines where our universes former teams, mergers, relocation proposals never existed or had its outcome altered slightly or severely! The list below is comprised of alternate timelines and the butterfly effect caused by our cheeky time traveller. Your job is to envision this outcome! Each comp will run for 1 week and the poll will run for 3 days. The winner picks the next team from the list below or can use their one-time self-imposed idea where they put forward an idea not listed below.

There are some routes you can go by if you're stuck:
  • The chosen team has entered their designated competition in the current year (unless specified) along with the current teams OR
  • If a year is not specified, you may design kits at any point in time OR
  • Accompany your kits with a backstory on how the team came to be to help better envision the outcome
Bare minimum for an entry is:
  • A home kit with the front of the jumper showing
    (Back, shorts, socks are optional)
  • OPTIONAL Away kit (Home with white shorts is acceptable)
  • OPTIONAL 3rd kit
    • Clash kit
    • Heritage kit
    • Other kit
  • OPTIONAL Club Logo (Highly Encouraged!)

Let’s see what has happened this time

So South has to have the nickname Bloods despite having the swan name before the move?
South Melbourne remain as is with both the Swans and Bloods monikers (Swans being the official one). I've always had a habit of referring to South Melbourne as the bloods, so that explains why I put that in the faux news pop-up instead of Swans

WIW-TTSE---Sydney-Separate-Team2.png

After South Melbourne reports their 5th consecutive $150k dollar loss in 1980, a push for a move to Sydney was looking more likely with each passing day. When the VFL rescinded such a proposition, the South board reached out to their supporters and over the next 2 years, they banded together to contribute to the greatest footy charity campaign and kept the Bloods down south. With some recent success in crowd numbers for exhibition games in Sydney, the urge to put NSW on the footy map was stronger than ever. And thus, the Sydney Mariners were born and entered the VFL in 1982. The name Mariners was chosen to honour the maritime origins of New South Wales. The use of light blue linking to their traditional state colours and the sea, Red from the Badge of NSW and navy to complement the colour scheme. The star comes from the Badge of NSW and to avoid confusion with Fitzroy, the usual 'Lion in the south' that sits in the middle of the badge was replaced by a navy 8-point star which is featured on the jumper

It was the year 1980 and the South Melbourne football club was struggling, and the AFL was keen to move a team into rugby territory, with good incentives the swans were keen for this idea but the fans wouldn't have it so they started the take flight campaign raising enough money for the swans to stay in Melbourne, with money not being an issue anymore the swans found more ways to increase income becoming one of the richest clubs in the AFL despite this they still struggled to find much success with players like tony lockett and others having their time at the club, this boosted the swans to premiership contention but they weren't strong enough to beat the roos it wouldn't be until 2022 until a premiership flag was raised in the south

The AFL still wanted a team in Sydney, so they made it happen in 1982 by berthing the Sydney Kookaburras with the double blue and traditional chevrons used by the state, at first the Burras struggled to gain interest and support, but with strong funding, they managed to lure stars such as Lance Franklin, Dustin martin and and many more to NSW and by the year 2019 the burras won their first premiership and now own Sydney being its biggest sporting team and over taking rugby in the state

The idea behind this weeks competition was to design just for Sydney but I have to say, I welcome the effort in recreating both respective teams :thumbsu:

sorry I was going to ask that, I was keen to do both, but I really like what I did with the Sydney branding, I was also thinking of celtics , wolves or making GWS or the Bears the Sydney team

cannavo sorry I mate, I didn't realise you'd also used Mariners!

My thinking was that South Melbourne would eventually make a Collingwood style inverse jumper, moving away from white, and that Sydney would, whether by natural growth or design, become a blue bloods team for blue bloods. The opera house is too strong a symbol not to use btw.

The year is 1981. Paramatta has won the 1981 NSW Rugby League championship.
The VFL is looking to expand into NSW. A taskforce is created for the proposal to enter a team in Sydney.
With the success of the Eels and growing popularity, the taskforce wanted to attract rugby fans across to ensure attendance to the games.
To do this, they decided they might attract rugby fans attention by adopting the popular Eels jersey design and colours. To further capture the attention of NSW fans and identity, they also decided the harbour bridge would form part of the design in the traditional sky blue.

Accordingly, the above design was adopted.
(In this world West Coast don't exist)

Gulls.jpg

In 1982 the VFL invited investors to create an expansion team based in NSW, Sydney in Particular. One portfolio backed by the NSW State Government, the Waverly Municipality Council, and NSWRL was chosen, and thus the Sydney VFL team was born. Known by a nickname previously used by St Kilda, the Seagulls were an obvious choice for a team that played just minutes away from the picturesque Bondi Beach. The Gulls played their inaugural season in 1984 wearing a Guernsey that utilized NSW Blue, White, and Yellow to symbolise the spectacular beaches in Sydney's eastern suburbs, the Seagulls were heavily endorsed by NSW beer brand, and NSWRL sponsor, Tooheys. The team ran out in round 1 1984 in front of 8,000 eager fans and got belted by Hawthorn (57pts). It wasn't until round 7 that the East Sydney Seagulls (a name that was later changed to include all Sydneysiders) beat Geelong by 7 points, did Sydney experience a VFL win.
