Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

Sorry I meant of the best handful that I picked. Yes Buckley and Judd also did it in losing GFs as another pointed out, and Hayes in a drawn one. Brereton 1985 is potentially the only other mega standout performance in a losing team that had a chance of winning one.

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

Yes I wish I was old enough to compare live the 1980 ones from KB. But for what I saw in 1989 and seen since, it would be a miracle like performance to do a near equivalent, letalone equal or better Ablett v Melb/Ess/Haw in 3 consecutive games on 1989, letalone 3 finals. My personal favorite...

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

This one is an interesting. Some of the others we are highlighting like Bartlett, Matera, Ablett, Martin 2020, etc. apart from being the clear best player, they have highlight reels to match which are timeless. Shuey was the best on ground to most but the spectacular highlight reels belong more...

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

I don’t think you can extrapolate performance linearly like that for extended time. However it was a great performance, and up there with the best. And as I said earlier, eerily similar in so many ways to Matera 1992 v Geelong.

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

I agree it is probably the best of the best, but the greatest margin of the day I think was at quarter time at 40 points :)

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

It would be hard to top, although Bartlett had a great 1980 final series in 3 games kicked 6, 8, and 7 (Norm Smith). Ablett kicked 3, 7, 8, 9 (Norm Smith) in his 4 finals that year. For those that saw them both as a sequence of 3 successive finals games was Bartlett's 21 goals in 3 games in...

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

I may be misremembering but wasn’t Stoneham named (and started the game) as the staring CHF ahead of Brereton for the famous 1989 State of Origin game vs South Australia. If so, says a lot about how good he was that year so young. He had a great second half of the 1989 grand final as well.

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

Interesting - has the game changed enough where 2013 version is more impactful than 2025? Or in low scoring (closer) and more dour game, against Lyon's Fremantle, did it just stand out more in a game of fewer spectacular highlights/

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

I think with time most fans who disliked the Eagles at the time agree with this (including me!!), sans maybe Bairstow and some Geelong fans of 1992/94 era who never experienced recent success.

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

The Hodge one I agree with in sense there was a lot of intangibles that were needed that day for Hawthorn to win. Him just being there, letalone playing well, especially in first 2.5 quarters when it was hard was critical. Along with many other things. But unlike the other three on your list...

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

Fair enough on your opinion of Geelong of that era. As I said earlier in thread to a fellow Geelong fan with similar opinion to you, I guess I just rated your team more highly. I think your excellent players in that time (92-93) of Ablett, Stoneham, Brownless, Couch, Bairstow, Hocking, Hinkley...

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

If you were trying to find the best quarter it would almost be an impossible task as there were a lot of good 1st quarters. You would almost have to compare 1st quarter to 1st quarter. For example how would you compare Rioli's Q1 in 2015 vs. Voss's Q4 in 2002.

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

Fair enough. Looking at end of season ladder, I forgot how close it was, although your percentage and attack was miles better than anyone else. The Bulldogs and Collingwood weren't far off the mighty WCE defence.

Watch the 1992 grand final and Matera. It's similar in so many ways.

Which Was The Best Norm Smith Performance?

Simon Black had a great game. As I remember that game Akermanis kicked 5 as well, and a lot of other Lions played very well. Was that the Lappin broken ribs game? In my mind compared to your other 4, I think Black 2003 was the most even vs. a clear standout on the day.
