    Cats made Tim Kelly stay another year and got more for him. Sydney made Papley stay. There are lots of others. Every situation is different and I do think it’s worth putting “a line in the sand” regarding players leaving at times even if in theory you’d get more for trading them right away...

    On the train to the city, pretty full carriage of footy supporters. Standing next to a Hawthorn supporter telling his mate (non Hawthorn) why Essendon owe Hawthorn to trade Merrett to them and why he shouldn’t cost much, almost pleading. They’re desperate, quite amusing.

    It would be stupid to push him out the door, but I think the club should initiate a conversation about wanting him to have the career he wants and therefore would try to support making it happen whatever that is.
