The old Southern Stand was built in the 1930s. No bars or places to sit. Just toilets and food kiosks behind. MCG was BYO beer until the late 1970s at least.
Agree. And same with Hawthorn. North pull decent crowds when winning (biggger than Dogs), which they should be by 2026. Again, same with Hawks. Both clubs should be playing 10 - 11 games in Melbourne. Melbourne is the easiest and most logical place to build the fan base.
The fact that there was no thought of playing footy @ GC until the Titans came in, then the AFL immediately shifted North there, then tried to bribe them to relocate is evidence is evidence that it was not a well thought out plan. It was reactionary and poorly conceived. I.e. The AFL panicked...
In 2006 I listened to SEN all day most days, watched all the Fox shows, read all the papers. What ’proof‘ are you looking for? Which parts don’t you believe?
If you are too young to remember, try a google search or Big Footy search.
Were you around in 2006?
There was no thought of anyone playing games on the GC until GC Titans were granted an NRL licence. Once that happened, the AFL panicked and offered North $400k per game @ GC, they were not given much choice. Once they were there the AFL and AFL media hstarted pressuring...
The AFL pushed them from Canberra to GC, hoping they would relocate.
GC and Tas getting their own teams is it North’s doing. That would have happened regardless of North’s level of commitment.
I would suggest that both the AFL (and Tassie) will strongly want North to keep playing there until 2027. And North won’t be able to replace the $$$ easily.
But it’s not just about the jobs is it?
When the time ones the Warne stand will be replaced @ MCG. That will cost $2B and won’t generate any jobs post construction.
UTAS finals plans released. Only upgrading less than half of the eastern side, but a new western stand that will house media & corporates - will be the best seats in the house. Amenities upgrade and new eastern entrance. Some new seats in front of Gunns stand. Capacity not listed anywhere but I...
Albury’s stadium is ready to go. QEII oval in Bendigo has a beautiful old grandstand but not much room to expand. Wound need millions spent and Victoria is broke somI can’t see that happening for a while. Do you think they will exit Hobart in 2026 rather than 2028 when Tassie come in?
Hawks are...
Yes. A 23k stadium should be able to handle 40k for concerts. Many of the big names will add on Hobart like they do with NZ regional cities that have smaller and more basic stadiums.
Reckon the current economy and high building costs may push that back a bit. Reckon definitely after the 2029 Ashes test. Maybe after 2030 AFL GF at the earliest.
Gil says the contracts are watertight.

It's not perfectly good, and it is over the river. It would be like having the MCG in Williamstown. And, as well all know, Tas had offer something too good to refuse to ensure a licence.
Ok. Whoever wrote that article in The Age missed that. It is the T20 WC.
Any rebuild will be in between Ashes series (2025/29/33). Knock down after 2030 GF, GF in Sydney 2031, then back for 2032 GF, which could actually be a week or two later due to the Brisbane Olympics.
Latest discussion is of a new Warne Stand with construction starting either after the 2027 GF, or RWC Final (should MCG host). Suggestions it might be done in one go, with the 2028 GF going interstate. Reckon one season with the G at 52k is better than two or three at 70k.
This would be brilliant, it is ridiculous that a city the size of Newcastle gets no first class cricket. It is probably ten years away as a new racetrack has to be built first. In the meantime, get some AFL content at No.1 Sportsground.
The Tas govt commitment is for no less than four games per season in Launceston. A $200m renovation of the UTAS precinct has been approved by the state govt and $65m has been allocated in the recent state budget. $200m includes an expansion to $27K (Stage 1 - new outer wing) and new 5K indoor...
I hate the idea of doing it in stages. Like 2004 - 2006 it means that three seasons are affected and at least two GFs. Better to do it in one hit like 1991.Sell off 1 x GF to Adelaide or Sydney. If you do it after 2027, it will be ready for 2029 finals and Ashes.
Also, if they really want to be...
