Welcome home Spud!

St Kilda great Danny Frawley has turned his back on an offer from Hawthorn and will join St Kilda as a part-time coach working with the team's defenders.

Frawley, 51, will work with the Saints three days a week, having long wanted to play a role at a club where he forged a reputation as one of the finest fullbacks of his era.

Frawley's appointment is expected to be announced at a press conference at 10am on Monday.

Frawley in Saints return after rejecting Hawthorn role

FORMER St Kilda captain Danny Frawley will be announced as the Saints' new part-time backline coach on Monday, after a last-minute change of mind over taking a similar role at Hawthorn.

The Hawks announced just last Friday that Frawley had been appointed as a specialist backline and key position coach, supporting Adem Yze.

Frawley, 51, was set to have the opportunity to work with his nephew James at Hawthorn.

But the former AFL Coaches’ Association boss has decided to return to the club where he played 240 games between 1984 and 1995, to fill a role that is understood to be greater in scope than the one offered by the Hawks.

Frawley was Richmond’s senior coach from 2000 until his sacking in 2004 and also has experience as an assistant at Collingwood and Hawthorn.

The Saints will announce Frawley’s appointment at a press conference at 10am in Seaford on Monday.

They are yet to appoint a new football manager after the resignation of head of football Chris Pelchen, and could decide to combine the duties of the vacant role with those Luke Beveridge would have filled as director of coaching.

Beveridge was appointed the Western Bulldogs' coach last week and went with the Saints' blessing, despite having not officially started at Seaford after accepting the director of coaching role mid-year.

Great news to have a fav son back:thumbsu:.
I had initial doubts just because what you could actually do as a backman when Danny played has changed so much.
I mean S.O.S is the fullback of the century but the way SOS played , chopping arms and holding on . He would give away 20 free kicks a game nowdays:D
But i guess Spud had a long run as an assis coach & then as a Senior coach up to 2004 so he will be well versed on the modern game:thumbsu:.
For those here too young to have watched Spud play and have only seen or heard him being silly on radio/telly. Dont worry, he was a seriously great fullback. And a tuff loyal leader.
I think its good for new recruits to be around past champions to help them soak up history of a club.
Good move Saints:thumbsu::thumbsu:

EDIT... i didnt realise that spud coached again after Richmond in 04. His 07/08 work at Hawthorn gives him even more cred:thumbsu::)
