He is a natural footballer. I suspect he is much loved by the playing group. We push him out at our own risk.
This. Building a Melbourne culture. Tossing Trengove aside is a mistake in every way.

Also, think back to his talent. Persisting is a risk but a worthwhile one in this case.

You're right that he was terrible in the second game where we got pumped by 93 points, but he was very good in the first. Again, all with a broken foot.
He was decent in the first one. Amazing for a guy who had no business being on the park. Really looking forward to eventually getting rid of Misson.

It's funy how much of a fall from grace this bloke has had in the eyes of supporters. When he came here, he was pretty much accepted as the best fitness guru around and the club was commended on getting such high quality support staff around the players. Now people cant wait to get rid of him

Trengove had decent stats in the first one but he was still slower than Dutchy and seemed to be wading through treacle every time he was in the middle.

If the Cats could stand by Menzel and Cowan for four years and Vardy for two, we can give our former captain a couple more years!

Not me. Caused a great club doctor to walk away from the team by constantly overruling him. He's a ******* spanner.

He had a solid CV coming in but the team's performance since 2012 in the fitness/conditioning department seems mediocre still, despite improvements in a lot of other areas. I think we should certainly look at an upgrade. His methods don't seem to be leading to much positive improvement.

This doesn't happen to be the club doctor who got us involved with Dank does it?

That was Dan Bates, the ones he's referring to were Kal Fried and Andrew Daff and they walked away in 2012 after years in the job.

Bates took the fall for Misson. Misson got himself full control of the medical staff yet we were led to believe the clown Bates was working rogue with Dank without the knowledge of his boss. Very lucky that one got swept under that giant AFL carpet.
Seriously? If correct Misson has to be removed.

In what capacity has Melbourne engaged Cross? I understand he has a sports science background (???). Could he be used in the fitness / recovery area? I'm not very up with who does what where (obvious I suspect) but Crossey is a decent example of managing his own fitness. I realise this doesn't always transfer to coaching but ... ?

I mean I obviously don't have any evidence but medicos that were very well respected walk out because Misson wanted full control over stuff he wasn't qualified to have an opinion on. Don't see how Bates would then be hired directly following that with any authority over Misson.

DANIEL Cross has confirmed he will remain with the club in an off-field capacity, after accepting a position as development and rehabilitation coach.

Manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said the club was delighted Cross had decided to take up the new role, after playing with Melbourne from 2014-15, following a fine career with the Western Bulldogs.

“Daniel has a sports science degree and was keen to work in this area post playing,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“He will work across the high performance and development teams during the week and will be our match day runner on game day.

“Daniel has ambitions in this area and we believe it will help him continually develop his skills.”

Cross said he’d made a lot of great relationships at the club in his two seasons with Melbourne and that made his decision a lot easier.

“I wanted to make the right decision and a real considered call on what was going to be the best opportunity for me to succeed and I really want to help the team get success,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“It was made clear in the end that I kept coming back to Melbourne as the best opportunity in the short term and long term.

“What clinched it for me was the emotional attachment I have for the playing group. I feel like I’ve been part of the rebuild since Roosy [Paul Roos] came to the club.

“To continue in the fitness group and to help the boys grow and succeed as a team – that really excited me. That was what drew me in the end.”

Cross said he had several opportunities presented to him, but in the end the lure of remaining at Melbourne – albeit in a different capacity – was too strong.

He added that he was keen to head down the conditioning pathway, but also help mentor players along the way.

Cross said he was unlikely to follow Shannon Byrnes, who retired in 2014 and moved into an off-field role and played with Casey in the VFL this year.

“Not at this stage. It’s going to be super tough for me to walk away from something that you absolutely love and treasure, but I’m sure I’ll be out on the track a bit with the boys,” he said.

“I’m sure the feet will become itchy and I might want to, but I really want to focus on helping the Melbourne playing group achieve what they want to now.

“The greatest thing I can do now is help the players be the best that they can be and that’s teaching, instructing and helping in any way that I can. I want to make Melbourne a better team, so I don’t think I’ll be pulling on a Scorpions jumper next year.”

I don't, he didn't deserve to spend it playing at Casey.

Reckon he would've gotten at least 10 or 12 games next year and would've been competitive as usual. Still a better player than Harry O'L or Melksham.

Aside from a couple of games he really wasn't doing much of anything, he would have been pushed out by the young guys coming through.

Maybe so, but we'll always have injuries, suspensions, etc and it would've been good to call on him if required. Not devastated he was let go, but I think he was a bit of a victim of being early 30s and having a few of his poorer games towards the business end of the year. Guess we'll see how teams line up next season, but I feel the guy would be offering more than a number of other players on the list.

Cross was more or less impotent in all but two games towards the back end of the season. Picked up numbers sure but there came a stage where his entire function involved taking intercept marks across half back and that's a role someone like Grimes or even an ANB type could do while offering more on the offensive.
