Whilst there is much fame and many accolades attributed to Len Hutton and Sir Jack Hobbs, Herbert Sutcliffe is often forgotten at the other end as 'the other opener' in history. Undoubtedly a top five opener in the history of the game, Sutcliffe averaged 60.73 from 54 Tests, scoring 16 centuries in those Tests. Sutcliffe was considered by his contemporaries as one of the hardest men at the crease to get out, and was noted by Bradman to have the coolest temperament of anybody he'd ever faced . Sutcliffe also has the distinction of being a member of the three most famous opening partnerships in English history, Sutcliffe-Hutton, Sutcliffe-Hobbs and Sutcliffe-Holmes.

You are correct. Personally I think he was the second best batsmen. Not streets ahead of other greats but still ahead.

One pick ago I thought I might be lucky enough to get away with Gavaskar but it's not to be.

I really wanted Sanga in my lineup so that's the price to pay.
