In a 250 kick season that is 25 scoring shots. So maybe 15 goals he gives up in comparison to JJK in exchange for greater influence up-field. You're basically swapping a bunch of full-forward lead-and-mark style goals for the occasional Talia/Hooker 3-bounce freak effort, or the insane bombs...
Not me. Just using them to illustrate the different playing styles. You seem to prefer the kick/scoring shot ratio. That's ok, let's do that:
Last three seasons of JJK (his peak and best form): 624 kicks, 357 scoring shots. Ratio of 57%.
Franklin 2007/2008 playing as a deep forward: 509...
Not really buying this. Half forwards are still clearly different. They often get the ball when outside of shooting range, and handball a lot more. Here's a list of 100+ handball seasons by player:
N. Riewoldt - 8
W. Carey - 7
L. Franklin - 7
J. Roughead - 7
J. Brown - 6
W. Tredrea - 4

Not in 30 years time. They all seem to think it now. There was some segment on Triple-M I happened to hear in the car where the commentators were ranking the retiring class of 2017, and nearly every one of them went Hodge, Riewoldt, Mitchell (or Mitchell even lower!). I mean, obviously I love...
Hodge and Mitchell.
I keep hearing people in the media and opposition supporters putting Hodge well ahead of Mitchell. I love them both, but I just can't wrap my head around it.
Once upon a time, there was a season played where two players (both greats of the game) put up these numbers:
Player A:
102.45 in 23 games
249 disposals
132 marks
12 Tackles
Player B:
82.55 in 25 games
486 disposals
200 marks
31 tackles
Which season do you think is lauded as one of the most...
Who was better in '96? Dunstall or Carey? Because that's basically the argument you're all having here.
Josh Kennedy averages about 60-70 handballs a season. Franklin often gets to about 130-150. One is a half-forward involved in midfield play, one isn't.
The astonishing bit is that...
Strange thread. Boyd played very well in the GF, but he was a bit part part player in your premiership. If his name was Joe Bloggs and he was on 100k a year, filled in with some ruckwork, kicked 10 goals all year then bobbed up with three and some key marks in the grannie, you wouldn't be...
Yeah nah. 1992 saw him kick 145, then 123, 101, 66, 102, 21 (injured) and 54. Those seven seasons he went at 4.93 goals/game - his career average was only 4.66. So basically, he was better when Hawthorn were s**t.
Edit: I had a number wrong and fixed it.
Everything is relative, he's a stay at home forward compared to Buddy, N. Riewoldt, Carey, etc.
I don't actually care about handballs, I'm just using them as a handy way to illustrate that the two players aren't playing the same position. If I had some fancy heat charts I'd show those, but I...
Jason Dunstall is my favourite player ever, but I wouldn't dream of claiming that he was better than Carey in 1996 just because he kicked a few more goals. That would be dumb.
Dunstall 1996 (23 games)
Goals 102
Kicks 187
Handballs 62
Carey 1996 (25 games)
Goals 82
Kicks 332
Handballs 154
JD...
There aren't many statistics in sport that are bigger outliers than Bradman's average. Someone just mentioned Phelp's 23 gold medals, but that isn't really what we're talking about - that is an accumulated achievement/longevity stat. He can rack that up by being slightly better than the...
