As much as I enjoy betting Lions plus points against a mediocre opposition, the sad truth is that the Lions will be fielding a VFL-quality lineup.
The scrappy team of last year that got wins against Geelong, Essendon and North Melbourne is no more. Through free agency, retirements, injury, suspension and team selection the current team is missing:
- Rich
- Leuenberger
- Hanley
- Merrett
- Black
- Staker
- Yeo
- Raines
- Polec
- McGrath
- Maguire
- Polkinghorne
- Docherty
- Harwood
- Longer
- Karnezis
Outside of Rockliff and Zorko they don't have a whole lot of talent, and they will be carrying too many players that are lacking experiencing or just aren't good enough (LISLE).

May I humbly opine: North struggle against elite mids - Jobe, Pendles and Fyfe this year already. In the last two North/GC games, Ablett has 75 disposals, 4 goals, 341 supercoach points, 6 brownlow votes and 2 wins. It's no coincidence that the Suns can't win against the best tagging team (Fremantle) but can win against the worst tagging team (North). The Suns aren't quite there but they are relatively fit and healthy, and should make a contest of it against a North side that is not entirely clinical. Other than in the ruck, I don't see any big advantages for North. Normally they have a speed advantage, but they won't have that against GC.

fair points, but given GC's poor record at Etihad + North's impressive last month (even the Pies game doesn't look diabolical given the Pies form) i'm happy to leave it be
also north letting gun mids run free is nice and all but it's not like GC have shown that ablett being a star = a win or even a competitive effort
