Not sure you can get more of a modern floor for this fixture than a rubbish Hawthorn hosting on a wet day - assuming that 2021 and 2022 were the Covid exceptions.
At least with Geelong hosting you have far more General Admission and Hawthorn reciprocal rights to buffer the attendance.
That...
Interesting, I wonder how much of an impact that:
a) Increased capacity from Optus Stadium and Adelaide Oval has played in beefing up that average, and:
b) the impact from the top 20 ‘blockbuster’ matches (for example, in 2007 (second season after MCG was redeveloped), 6 of the top 20...
Or they just don’t go?
On a population basis, attendances for most non marquee games are lower now then they were 10 or 20 years ago (accounting for population growth), and even back in the early 2000’s mid 30,000 attendances today don’t draw considerably more than they did then.
The big...
50,000 plus would be very, very good.
Only a handful of 55,000 plus Dogs games in history. Take out the GF rematch (58,000) and the top Dees v Dogs game is 48,001 last year
Regular round 1 fixture? It will be next year (Hawthorn’s 100th VFL/AFL year).
Also the third time the round 1 fixture has drawn 65,000 or more in round 1 (2017 - 78,294, 2023 - 68,691 and now 2024)
They also played a round 1 game at Marvel in 2021 (25,128)
Don't you mean Saturday?
I’m not a fan of locked-in fixtures but there is a push to make the Ess v Haw a annual fixture (if it means one less Marvel game, that's great)
It will definately be round 1, 2025, which will be Hawthorn’s VFL/AFL centenary game (the third in a row and 5th in 8 years)...
It started before Covid though.
Finals attendances took a dip in the late 1990s and really didn’t return until 2009/10.
Only got to look at the number of 50,000 something MCG attendances after the establishment of a top 8.
Under the old system, the first week was just a glorified home and...
As they should - given clubs have massive membership reserves they really should throw the kitchen sink at getting extra attendances to these 25k to 30k games.
As I said, Hawthorn v Sydney has outdrawn the fixture literally six times in home and away games over the past 20 years.
As have many Melbourne matches against different opposition (for example St Kilda in 2017, also a pink lady fixture in almost identical conditions )
It is a disappointing...
Absolutely.
Two MCG co-tenants should draw far more, especially with Hawthorn’s members having free access on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and Melbourne vying for the flag.
It’s really not when you factor in the Pink Lady freebies
Haw v Melb used to draw roughly the same as Haw v Rich until about a decade ago.
The fixture really hasn’t kicked on
Melbourne get the sweet heart MCC treatment, Collingwood is the number 1 ticket in town and Richmond is a 60 year MCG tenant and the 3rd biggest draw in Victoria.
By comparison, Hawthorn is the newest of the MCG tenants, the 5th biggest club in Victoria with the 5th most MCC and AFL members...
Or including Kayo memberships in club figures!
Club membership hasn’t really mattered since the AFL stopped allocating GF tickets based on membership size (2010?)
Doesn’t make sense given North v Hawthorn drew 30,000 plus in the same slot a fortnight ago.
Hawthorn will have a big task selling 5 Marvel home games to members.
Only thing I could think of is with MCG games wedged against Carlton, Richmond and Collingwood perhaps this game was ‘the one to miss’
On a like for like attendance comparison, Hawthorn draws around 25,000 more to the corresponding fixtures in Melbourne compared to Tasmania so you can add 80,000 to 120,000 to Hawthorn’s attendance.
For example, last years Tasmanian fixtures against the last 3 Melbourne based fixtures...
Fifth
56,219
That said we haven’t played an MCG game against them since 2018 - another fixture routinely scheduled in Launceston
North Melbourne is higher, relative, because of a 50,000 plus outlier when Hawthorn was shooting for four flags in a row
Hawthorn home and away MCG attendances against Victorian clubs over the last decade (take out Covid)
Geelong - 67,740
Essendon - 65,242
Collingwood - 61,067
Richmond - 59,036
Carlton - 56,069
North Melbourne - 41,803
W Bulldogs - 39,368
Melbourne - 38,906
St Kilda - 35,185
Take out Geelong...
Richmond and Hawthorn was historically a poor draw but not so over the last decade.
Take out the Covid impacted 2021 and the last 5 Rich v Haw games have drawn 59,338, 64,698, 70,701, 58,342 and 51,892.
That is 60,994 across all games.
Of those games, 3 were 3.20pm Sunday games and 2 were...
Just goes to also show how divisive Kennett was towards the end of his presidency.
I haven’t seen Hawthorn’s membership this year but they’ve had at least 5,000 more members than Geelong in every season since 2007.
Geelong do have a cap with Kardina Park though
I’ve been pretty happy with Hawthorn’s numbers this year just quietly.
Just a 32,500 average but 6 of those games were played in either Launceston, Norwood, Carrara or the Showgrounds.
Our average in Melbourne is 47,298 split as 55,042 at the MCG (against Essendon, Geelong, Melbourne, Brisbane...
It’s arguably the most under marketed VFL/AFL rivalry of all.
They shared Princes Park for 17 years and 11 flags - and 17 flags between 1961 and 1995.
That said they haven’t played a final since the 1988 Semi Final.
The AFL really didn’t market the Hawks and Dons in any sort of way until the...
3rd Hawthorn MCG game to draw 65,000 plus with Collingwood and Richmond games to come.
Before 2008 HFC had only played 4 home and away games before 65,000 plus in its history (including the Waverley Park farewell game)
Hopefully this points to a greater core after the 2008 to 2016 golden era
