Right but how much of their financial success has been from AFL handouts and Tassie money?
Not sure long-term the Roos are out of the woods yet, financially speaking.
Surely Suns by 20+.
If the Eagles win this then gees look out, they could get on a roll and surprise a lot of people, don't forget big Oscar is still to come back.
I do think 6+ wins is achievable for them this year, and if they play like they did in the derby and stay healthy, two big ifs...
Haha, fair enough, you've got some passionate supporters, that's undoubtedly helped keep your mob off the chopping block.
Yeah, 6 VIC (5 Melb 1 Geel), 2 each WA, SA, NSW, QLD, 1 TAS, 1 ACT, 16 teams. Would've been perfect until Darwin hits like 450k people which is 1000 years away haha.
If we...
Yep, hard to disagree with any of that. I do think 2-3 more Vic relocations would help with rationalisation of the league and make it more national, but it's up to North and they have no incentive to move.
I just hope 10 clubs in Victoria doesn't shut the door on future expansion, although if...
Wow. I don't know if I'm misreading this or not but it sounds like... Fitzroy caved in and lost the will to keep fighting for its survival. I know the AFL blocked them from moving to Canberra, though, which didn't help. Manuka oval is on Fitzroy street...
Your knowledge on the history of Fitzroy and its sad demise is impressive.
In the part I've bolded in your last paragraph, if the AFL did withdraw a clubs licence to compete, it can be overturned in court, can't it?
What might have happened if Fitzroy did not voluntarily surrender its licence?
Yeah but they kind of did that with Fitzroy, didn't they?
It wasn't really a merger so much as it was a rebranding of the Bears. Roys licence, history and assets are done and dusted in the AFL as far as I'm aware.
It was a different time, though, and Fitzroy were in a far worse situation, so I...
I knew that about relocation, not about folding, but I did know the AFL couldn't simply just fold them, even if they wanted to, which they don't.
What about clubs owned by the AFL? Could the AFL fold the Suns/Giants? Not that they would/should.
Anyway, I hope ACT gets their own team.
After...
While I do think the Giants eventually need to move on from Canberra and the Riverina and stop blocking the ACT from actually having their own team one day, you are most likely correct about the Giants having done enough work there to cement them as the second favourite of the place, and when I...
Yeah, that's a good short term fix, but long-term, if Canberra were to get their own team, then those two Canberra games the Giants currently get during the Easter Show could surely be moved to Accor.
Agreed. I’d love ACT and WA3 but North won’t budge so there’s only one spot up for grabs.
Surely the Giants can move their three Canberra games to Accor. One against Sydney, one against Collingwood, and one against whatever other big Vic club is flying that year. They should get good crowds for...
Make them an offer: relocate to ACT or fold. With access to Riverina talent and a unique home ground advantage at an upgraded Manuka, and actual crowds that will turn up to games, they could actually become relevant again.
If they move, then WA3 as team 20.
Would be an insult to the people of Tasmania to shift a Melbourne club there. No way Jose.
Canberra would be a good place for North to start fresh, with access to the Riverina talent. They won't agree to do it, though.
Yeah and I wasn’t in my post you replied to. Of course I don’t think it would’ve begun with 20 teams or so. It was what I think it might look like today. But yeah, of course it’d be the five major cities to start.
Depends on how many teams they wanted/could support.
Newcastle would be viable, same as Canberra, Gold Coast, and New Zealand who would easily have the population.
NQ works too with Townsville on board with the code plus input from Cairns/Mackay.
Tassie in time like we’re getting soon.
And...
If there was just one code, there’d probably be 6 Sydney, 5 Melbourne, 1 each Newcastle, Canberra, Geelong, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, North Queensland, New Zealand, and Tasmania.
But there’d be enough talent for more than 20 teams if the NRL didn’t exist so there’d probably be more...
I also wonder whether GWS losing their fitness coach is gonna hurt them or not. They looked like the fittest team in the latter half of last season, running over everyone, even Adelaide and Collingwood. Wonder if they’ve still got that last quarter mojo or not.
On an unrelated note to this...
I know that, they weren't last year or the year before but they seem to be well coached and fit and they're gonna give themselves the best chance to win most games they play. Doubt they get blown away again like they did in the first two games of the year.
