COLLINGWOOD footballer Ben Johnson is likely to avoid a formal court hearing over charges stemming from a brawl outside a Port Melbourne nightspot.
Johnson was charged on summons with recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault over a fight also involving former Magpie Chris Tarrant outside trendy Ocean Blue nightclub at Station Pier on July 30.
Bayswater north electrician Robert Howie, 28, was treated in hospital for head injuries.
Yesterday the case was adjourned at Melbourne Magistrates' Court for a diversion hearing on December 19. The diversion program allows first-time offenders to avoid a criminal conviction.
Johnson did not appear in court.
Collingwood fined Tarrant and Johnson $5000 under its players' code of conduct, with chief executive Wayne Swann saying his club had players "who enjoy getting out and being a bit more sociable than others".
As opposed to the Carlton culture which is try and buy your way to a flag.Fits well to the playing culture at Collingwood. Soft oustsider! Wouldn't be surprised.
