Some of you may be interested in this new initiative.

The SA Football Video Archive has been created with the following aims:
1. To collect footage of SANFL, State of Origin and State football matches and related material. Althought not exclusive, the emphasis is on collection of material dating up until and including the 1990's.
2. To convert footage only available on VHS/BETA video tape to DVD.
3. To build up an archive of historic footage that might otherwise be lost forever.
4. To facilitate the trading of this footage.

Great idea. The same thing must happen for WAFL footage. Unfortunately, I fear much of it is locked in the Archive vault of Channel Seven Perth, and they're being quite evasive when I try to find out what they've got locked in there.

:thumbsu: Thoroughly agree - i've been trying to get replays of minor/major round games in SANFL from 1965 onwards and i suspect strongly that Channel Seven have got these locked in their Archive vaults given that i have seen clips of such games used in various footy shows over recent years....
It seems a pity that someone (maybe SANFL, WAFL) with some clout does not make a play for access.

The thing is, I know that Channel Seven Perth has got a vast archive of WAFL matches. Channel Seven in Melbourne apparently deleted all of its VFL/AFL footage prior to 1993 (or thereabouts), however that's not the case with Ch. 7 Perth.

In a book Dennis Cometti wrote he mentions that in 1998, Seven Perth's long-time archivist was retiring and before he did, Cometti had the guy transfer a batch of games to tape for Cometti's personal use. These included the 1964 WAFL Grand Final between Claremont and East Fremantle, as well as the 1983, 84 & 86 State of Origin Games between WA and Victoria.

I also vaguely remember that in Sean Gorman's book about the Krakouer Brothers, he remembers the day that Warren Ralph kicked his 100th goal for the 1981 season, and that the first to congratulate him were the Krakouers. This game would be great to get as it's the day that Claremont kicked 39.20 (254) and set a record WAFL score (which was broken four weeks or so later).

The games are there - someone just needs to get access. If the stations aren't going to broadcast the games, then what use are the tapes if they're just going to sit there and deteriorate?

Same thing needs to happen with old VFL footage - what 7 did was inexcusable!! I can't believe the clubs or AFL hasn't initiated something like this off their own bats but if supporters can try and build up an archive at least of each club it would be a start. Only problem is it will be confined to the broadcast version of games (highlights, ads etc) rather than the master tape version.

Good initiative by these guys hope they can save quite a bit of otherwise lost footage.

Other news:

Many people have complained that they are unable to obtain the footage they would like to see because they have nothing to trade to begin with. Therefore we have decided to begin making selected footage available in full, on YouTube. We have started by uploading the complete "The Way It Was" series from the 1980's.

The Sandgropers are getting in on the act! The WAFL Video Archive has just been launched and already has an impressive list of great footage. Dedicated to preserving the history of the WAFL, the site is a must for anyone interested in Western Australian footy or anyone who just loves the game.
